Flag - Flag - Pre-Federation Ensign Flag, c. 1880
The flag was donated by Mrs A. M. Mitchell Craigwood Convalescent Hospital Como WA "This flag was made by my Grandmother, Elizabeth Nicholls nee Tallack. It was used as a decoration to welcome Lord Hopeton (Hopetown) to Sandford sometime previous to 1883, when he was still a Viscount. I can't remember his name. No doubt Mr H.K. Kahan is no doubt quite correct in these dates and could find no record of the earlier visit. My mother Phillippa was a young girl at the time and sang at the concert in his honor "Will ye no come back again". It must have been before 1883 because in that year at the age of 18 she married. After the concert he asked that the young lady and her mother be presented. Next day he came to afternoon tea. A great honor in those days". Phillippa Tallack Nicholls was born 1865, Sandford, and married in 1883 to Patrick Maguire. (Digger Pioneer Index 1836 to 1888). There was a Royal Visit in 1881 by the Duke of Clarence and the Duke of York and their party to the district and this appears to be the visit that Mrs Mitchell is referring to. In 2005, Casterton and District Historical Society Inc. donated the flag to the Glenelg Shire Council Cultural Collection for the citizens of Casterton.Five 5-pointed stars forming the constellation of the Southern Cross on a field of royal blue. Roma was the youngest of three siblings: Jean (Mrs John Gavin (Jack) Ralston) and James (Jim) (m. Joan Hossack). Women’s magazines during WWII played a “reflecting role,” meaning they cooperated with government agendas while still including topics of readers’ interests Women’s employment rate had skyrocketed during WWII. However, even though the number of women working outside the home grew rapidly most of them were still engaged entirely in homemaking. Therefore women’s magazines centered mostly on the stresses and shortages of wartime. Articles as well as advertisements presented information on “product rationing, tips on keeping the family healthy, guidelines for thrifty shopping and advice on how to look good through it all. This is an example of an English women's magazine published during WW11.It gives practical advice on needlework / knitting and evidences the widespread interest in contemporary fashion. In doing so it shows what were the fashionable, but broadly affordable, women's and children's clothing styles of their day. These magazines also reflect women's interests An English magazine published monthly. It is titled Woman and Home & Good Needlework Magazine, July 1944. On the front cover is a picture of a bride and groom cutting a wedding cake. The groom is dressed in military uniform. the price 9D has been crossed out and 1/- is below it. Photograph, Ken Hall, Victorian home at 215 Union Road, Surrey Hills, Original: 1920; copy by Ken Hall: 1980s
Built in 1888, which was 5 years before water reticulation came to Surrey Hills. It originally relied on rainwater and a well (still in existence in 2009) was located near the back door. From 1921 this was the home of Mr Natale and Mrs Ethel May Cerini and their family. It remained in the family until it was sold in May 2015. The Cerinis had 2 daughters - Jocelyn Francesca and Lynette Lorraine . The house passed to Jocelyn after her parents' deaths. Mr Cerini named the house after a property in NSW called 'Goonoogoonoo' where he had worked. It had been named 'Montiere' at a previous time. Natale was an accountant and very active in community affairs, especially after his retirement. The house was originally on a double block. [Additional information: Ken Hall - 2/12/2009] The first owner was A Embling, followed by Mrs L A Campbell. Photograph - Sister Hughes' Private Hospital in Wodonga
Sister Hughes’ Private Hospital on the corner of High and Stanley Streets, Wodonga operated between 1922 and 1938. The building was constructed as a family home for Albert Schlink, a storekeeper in 1909. The building was first used as a private hospital in 1919 starting with Nurse Eliza Browne. It had six or seven rooms, one of which was an operating theatre. There was a walkway, then three bedrooms and a bathroom that belonged to the hospital all in the one area. A small building at the back served as a self-contained flat. Catherine Josephine Hughes' sister Mabel earlier married into the Schlink family and came from Bendigo to take over the Lease on the hospital in 1922. Apart from Sister Hughes, there were Nurses Poyntz and Costello. Three domestic staff were also employed – a cleaner Elsie Enever, the cook Mrs Baker and Mrs Kimball who did the laundry. Nurses Poyntz and Costello took charge of the hospital in 1938 and Catherine Hughes continued to be listed as a nurse on the electoral roll until 1954. In the early 1940s she conducted a business in the “lolly shop” in High Street, south of St Augustine’s Church. The Private Hospital in High Street possibly closed in 1954 with the opening of the Wodonga Hospital in Vermont Street. The images are significant because they represent a building and nurses who served an important role in the Wodonga community in the early 20th century.A set of black and white photos of Sister Hughes Hospital in Wodonga and some of the staff. The architect's plans of the original house, designed for Albert Schlink are included.sister hughes wodonga, hospitals wodonga -
Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Article - Digital copy, Sailors on Holiday, 9 November 1909
SAILORS ON HOLIDAY. . "A jolly party of Jack Tars mustered at the Missions to Seamen Institute yesterday at noon, and proceeded by train to Glen Iris, where they were the guests of Dr. and Mrs. Cherry. Liberal arrangements had been made for the delectation of these sons of the sea, to whom a sight of the tree , and grass and flowers were alone a real treat. A football match and a cricket match resulted in well contested struggles. Then followed tea of a substantial kind on the lawn, under the trees. As soon as this had been despatched, sports of various kinds— including a side-splitting "costume race"— were carried out with great vigor. The host and hostesses provided useful and ornamental articles as prizes, and these were distributed to the successful competi tors by Mr. Cherry. Then followed cheers for Dr. and Mrs. Cherry at the call of tire chaplains, Rev. A. E. Goldspink and Rev. W. F. Haire. Dr. Cherry replied by say ing that it gave him and M Cherry great pleasure to see the men enjoying them selves, and he hoped arrangements would be made for another such party ou an other occasion. Till a late hour at night the institutes on the Australian Wharf and at Port Melbourne were merry with crowds of tars."The article shows the importance of these outdoor outings for sailors after spending several months at sea.sailors, seamen, lhlg, picnics, sports, dr cherry, glen iris, thomas cherry -
