The Rays' badge was adopted by General Grand Council in Melbourne in 1935 with the design being submitted by South Australia. It was not to be worn on the Rays' regalia. "The shape of the badge represented the love with which every child of God is encircled. The blue circle stood for loyalty, the ivy leaf for friendship as well as recognising the Rays as a section of the Methodist Girls' Comradeship, and the white background for purity of mind and heart. The gold lines represented the good deeds which go out from each young life as rays of light bring sunshine to others. This meaning was adopted at General Grand Council in Sydney in 1948. In 1966, General Grand Council in Sydney, decided to discontinue the use of the Rays' badge in favour of the one badge [B021] for the whole organisation, thus emphasising the unity of all sections." Ross Castle sits on the edge of Killarney's lower lake and was built by O'Donoghue Mór in the 15th century. The Castle came into the hands of the Brownes who became the Earls of Kenmare and owned an extensive portion of the lands that are now part of Killarney National Park . Legend has it that O'Donoghue still exists in a deep slumber under the waters of Lough Leane. On the first morning of May every seven years he rises from the lake on his magnificent white horse and circles the lake. Anyone catching a glimpse of him is said to be assured of good fortune for the rest of their lives. The large rock at the entrance to the bay is known as O'Donoghue's prison. Ross Castle was the last stronghold in Munster to hold out against Cromwell. It was eventually taken by General Ludlow in 1652. When the Commonwealth Post and Telegraph Act was passed in June 1902, and a national Postmaster General's Department (the PMG) was established the responsibility for the nation's mail and telephone services fell on Post Offices. The Bendigo Post Office, built in 1887 and continued to deliver communication and postal services until 1997. Ted Rankins was the last Post Master at the Bendigo Post Office and a long term telegraph volunteer post his retirement. Now a Visitor Centre, dedicated volunteers at the Post Office continued to demonstrate and educate the public about the daily workings of the Post Office up until 2019 when Covid 19 disrupted every day life. This sign was issued to Ted during his time working at the Post Office and is part of the postal collection donated by the Rankins family in memory of Ted. Yellow plastic desk plate. Originally designed in 1857 and extended to the further designs by Bendigo Architects Vahland and Getzschmann, Emil Mauermann and William Beebe the original two story house expanded over time as Lansell's fortune increased and the subsequent mansion was built adjacent to the New Chum Reef and mine from which most of his wealth was yielded. Fortuna remained in the Lansell family for twenty nine years after George died and was sold by auction for demolition in 1934 only to be saved to become a reception house. In 1942 the Army acquired a lease for wartime mapping and occupied the site until 2008. It is now in private hands with the surrounding land being divided for housing. Part of the PeopleScape Federation Celebration An initiative of the National Council for the Centenary of Federation, celebrating the contribution of Australians to their community and country. The final event of the year long celebrations, held in Canberra, the city that Federation created. The public art installation told the individual stories of Australians from all walks of life, from those living and those who had died. The massive sculpture depicted the life of the nation. The figures were nominated and decorated by individuals, groups of individuals and organisations from across Australia with every state, territory and region represented with approx. half from regional and the remote areas of Australia. The sculpture was installed in alphabtical order, each with a plaque at its base outlining the individual's achivement. A photo of boys being instructed by Jim Tierney. The embroidered symbol on their shirts are 'DS' which stands for Don Esses. This was another group of boys that Legacy helped. From notes on the ILC (Intermediate Legacy Club): The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a horse drawn Baker's Cart replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public during the 1880 and early 1900's. A model of a single horse drawn red enclosed Capital Bakery Cart which is a lightweight four wheeled one passenger horse drawn carriage where the driver sits behind. It has two large and two smaller gold painted spoked wheels with brown rims, grey and black painted seating two gold coach lamps and a sloped red and tan footrest for the driver. There is a brake lever on the right side of the cart which activates the brake on the back wheel. At the rear are two ventilated gold doors and cupboards underneath the seat. There are two silver metal tubular shafts on each side to surround the brown horse which has a black tail and mane. It has the necessary horse tack for cart use to help the driver communicate with the horse. These carrier carts or vans were four wheeled medium weight Commercial Vehicles which were a very familiar sight in the horse drawn era. Every kid 'whipped behind' bread carts. The first models were imported from England around 1870 and later the local coachworks built many models. The Australian Sports Medal award was instituted in the year 2000 and awarded for 2000 and 2001 before being discontinued. The medal has been reinstated for awards in 2020.The medal recognizes the efforts of a range of Australians, including former competitors, coaches, sports scientists, office holders and those who maintained sporting facilities and services.Australian Sports Medal and miniature and presentation box awarded to Val Campbell in 2000. The medal is a round shape of silver coloured metal suspended from a yellow ribbon with four green stripes. The design on the obverse is the five stars of the Southern Cross constellation above four horizontal lines. The miniature is a replica of the medal itself and is identical in every respect except for the engraved name on the reverse. The box is line with white satin on the inside of the hinged lid with the medals resting in a moulded black velvet covered tray. Principal Frank Lord gave an ANZAC Day address called "Live Every Day as an Anzac Day". The address started with "Our opportunity is with the children. If we failed i nthe past, lest us begin again now. You are young, and let it be your resolve to live every day as an Anzac Day, and achieve some of the things for which the men of two wars have laid down their lives. Living your days with an air of kindness and decency, you will set an example to the children, and when a country's children are made happier and finer, it will follow that the county will be a happier and finer place." Mt Lord referred to theseven and a half months' occupation of Gallipoli, and the tenacious clinging by Anzac troops to their square mile of territory. Illness, disease and death came to the confined area, but there also came a spirit of self-sacrifice and charity, and a courage whoich scorrned death and won for the Australian troops world renown. Strong men broke under the conditions, but their comrades carried them on, and the prevailing spirit among men was that the had dedicated ther lives to ensuring a decent society at home, free of tyranny. For the achievement of this, they were prepared to die. It became characteristic that when things were at their worst, men were at their best. Discipline did not come from above on Gallipoli, for the men stuck their own standards of discipline, and stuck to them. ... After the 1914-18 war, it was surprising to find head teachers who did not know children of deceased and disabled soldiers in their schools. Correspondence between Aaron Beattie Esq from Beattie Physical Culture College Melbourne and E. Hilmer Smith Esq about Girls’ Physical Culture Classes in July 1928. It was intended to aid the Sydney Legacy Club establish classes for girls. Excerpts include the following information: "I would suggest that you form a special C/tee to handle the Physical Culture work. . . . I would suggest that special care be taken to see that none but fully-qualified and trained teachers handle the children - this is all important. . . . We charge every child 5/- per year, payable quarterly. We have been most fortunate here with the girls section. An old friend of mine - Mrs Gillies - is our Hon. Directress. She was - until her marriage - in charge of all Physical Culture training in the State Schools of Victoria, and is a wonderful woman. She takes complete charge, appoints her own staff and so on. We pay some of her assistants from £2.2.0 to £5.5.0 per term of 12 weeks. The class was formed in May last year with 42 girls - we now have 121, and they have left the boys far behind. Enclosed you will find a copy of our measurement chart, which is an important part - every child should be recorded before starting, and again at the end of the year. I am also sending you a copy of our Demonstration Programme. This show was given after the girls had been going for 10 months, and it was a wonderful success - all these things help to bring success, and children seem to want these things to keep them going. . . . We spend about £600 per year on our Children's Work and nearly all of that goes to the Physical Culture side." The correspondence is a good snapshot of the undertaking of Melbourne Legacy running girls' club at that point in time and that Melbourne Legacy was trying to help Sydney Legacy establish a similar program. The magazine was edited by Reverand R.C. Nugent Kelly as an Anglican Church publication. Reverend Kelly: Born in 1858 to Robert George and Mary Kelly (nee. Walker) of Birkenhead, England. Married Emma Louisa Edith Cremer in 1882 in England Died 11 Oct 1936 in Hornsby Shire, New South Wales, Australia Kelly joined All Saints Bendigo in 1896 where he edited the 'Our Own Magazine' and established a reputation for effective financial management. He left Bendigo in 1901. Much of his life was spent dedicated to church work which was documented as early as 1890. Now known as Old All Saints Cathedral, the church is located on the Northern corner of Mackenzie Street and Forest Street. The church was closed in 2015 and has remained abandoned. The church is located across the street from Bendigo Historical Society on Mackenzie Street. The Lambeth Conference: "The first Lambeth Conference took place in 1867 when the Archbishop of Canterbury, Charles Thomas Longley, invited the bishops of what would become the Anglican Communion to gather for a conference at Lambeth Palace.... There were two main issues that led to this invitation: First, a growing desire, expressed by many bishops around the world, to gather in order to pray, to study scripture and to confer together and, second, to address difficult pastoral and theological issues that were causing divisions between bishops around the world. These issues related to how the Christian gospel was and should be expressed in different cultures... Over successive Lambeth Conferences the mind of the bishops was expressed through published resolutions. These resolutions have touched on every area of the life and mission of the church... It has encouraged and enabled significant decisions to be made by the member churches" The 1897 conference resulted in 62 resolutions including the desire and establishment of regular conferences every ten years.1 October 1897 Edition of 'Our Own Magazine: A Church Monthly for the People'. Walsham How (Bishop of Wakefield, C of E), the establishment of a press committee by the Anglican church, summaries of important sermons, mission notes, Parish news, baptisms, marriages and deaths. It's encouraging to see my city using poetry in such a public way. The park itself is a humble one, which suits these little poems perfectly. If you're ever in town come and take a seat for a while. The poem 'Little Bridge' by Nathan Curnow was commissioned as part of a placemaking project in Little Bridge Street Pocket Park, Ballarat in 2018. The Park was redesigned to include more passive surveillance, and improved amenity to increase community safety in the area. The poem is engraved onto seating to provide a rest and point of interest space in the small park. Uniforms for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games were designed by Wendy Powitt in conjunction with the AWC. Doug Pleasance, donor of these items, worked for the AWC and closely with Wendy Powitt, obtaining these uniform examples. About the Olympic Uniforms Doug wrote- 1. The Official Uniform which was used for travel and all official functions. This included: a tailored blazer and trouser/skirt (all water repellent) by Fletcher Jones, pure wool olive-green faille fabric by Foster Valley, cotton PE formal shirt by Pelaco, pure wool knitwear by Spangaro, printed wool tie by T D Noone, wool nylon socks by Holeproof and footwear by Hush Puppy. 2. Opening Ceremony Uniform a lightweight wool fabric printed with floral designs that had been inspired by the work of Australian artist Margaret Preston. This included: Lightweight W/PE shorts by Fletcher Jones in Foster Valley Fabric, socks by Holeproof and footwear by Hush Puppy. 3. Village Clothing was designed to be highly visible garments to make it easy to spot the Aussie and helped to contribute to good team spirit. Fire brigade competitions have been running for almost 150 years with the first State Championship held in Melbourne in 1874. State Championships have continued every year since 1873. The event goes on regardless of weather conditions or natural disasters. The only cancellations being due to WWI and WWII. In the 1950s, the Rural State Championships were developed to reflect the unique skills of rural brigades. The competitions started out as 'Demonstrations' with the introduction of hose reels into the fire service in the mid 1800s. This was to assist in getting hose and other necessary equipment to the scene of a fire faster. Brigades soon find that competing with other brigades improved their training and efficiency. The State Championship became the peak of the season's competitions conducted by districts and associations across the state. The contents of this display case are known as Princess Mary’s Christmas Fund 1914. In October 1914 Princess Mary, the 17 year-old daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, launched an appeal to raise funds to produce a Christmas present for every person serving in the British and Allied Forces in World War One. The Christmas box was a silver one for officers and a brass one for other ranks. The box usually contained a packet of cigarettes and tobacco, a Christmas card and a photograph of Princess Mary but some boxes contained confectionery, notebooks, pencils etc. By Christmas 1914 200,000 boxes had been distributed but it took until 1920 to dispose of the 2,500,000 boxes that were produced. Many of the boxes given to Australian servicemen have survived but few contain any or all of the contents. It is not known to whom this box was sent. This box and its contents are of great interest as an important memento of Australian participation in World War One. This is a rectangular brass tin and its contents – two yellow cardboard boxes which originally held cigarettes and tobacco, a Christmas card and a photograph of Princess Mary. The five items are displayed within a rectangular wooden box with a removable glass top. The brass tin is embossed with an image in the centre of Princess Mary surrounded by a laurel wreath. The embossing includes the letter ‘M’ (twice) and the names of some of the allies of Britain in World War One. The Victorian Railways J class was a branch line steam locomotive operated by the Victorian Railways (VR) between 1954 and 1972. A development of the successful Victorian Railways K class 2-8-0, it was the last new class of steam locomotive introduced on the VR. The history of Samuel Adams Utopias comes from the extreme beers of Triple Bock and Millenium that came before it. With those brews The Boston Beer Company began the exploration of aging beer in barrels for a different flavor contribution. In 2002 the first batch of Samuel Adams Utopias was introduced with a complex flavor profile unlike any other beer, and an ABV of 24-29%, making it the strongest naturally-fermented beer to date. Lal Lal Falls Reserve contains one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Moorabool Shite. The watefall is part of the on Lal Lal Creek, a tributary of the Moorabool River. and plunges 30 metres from a high basalt column into a deep ravine. Culturally, the Falls are believed to be the earthly home of Bunjil, the All Father or Creator to most Victorian Aboriginal tribes. The name Lal Lal is thought to be Aboriginal for "dashing of waters". The Lal Lal Falls is listed on the Site Registry of Aboriginal Affairs Victoria as a spiritual place. in 1837 a Government Survey Party led by Frederick D'Arcy documented these Falls on the west branch of the Moorabool River. On the reserve opposite, a Race Meeting was held on every New Years Day from 1860 until 1938, attracting crowds of up to 20,000 people. Open Every Door consists of two wall paintings, each will remain at the site for 6 months, and a website publication. In April 2021 Briony installed the second artwork A Lover not a Fighter. Each abstract wall painting references queer histories and art makers, as well as abstract drawings made by Deakin’s Spiritualist contemporaries, such as Georgiana Haughton (1814-1884). The work was part of a City of Ballarat annual commission program to create temporary public artworks in Alfred Deakin Place, Ballarat. The artwork featured on a prominent site near the Art Gallery of Ballarat Annex. Steel-jawed rabbit traps were widely used in urban and rural Australia from 1880 to 1980. This trap is symbolic of the battle that Australians have waged against burgeoning rabbit populations for over a century. Despite the fact that most children first learn about rabbits as cute and cuddly animals, rabbits cause enormous damage to Australian soils and biodiversity. The introduction of rabbits to this country was an environmental disaster. Lane's Ace rabbit trap was the most commonly used trap in Australia. Hundreds of thousands of the traps were made and used in this country. As such, this item is representative of every day life in Australia during the period from 1880 to 1980. During the Great Depression from 1929 to 1932, rabbit trapping was a means of survival for many people.
