This book has been given to John Ardlie by Lewis Gilles in 1866. John Martin Ardlie came to Warrnambool in 1852 as the Clerk of Courts and remained in this position until 1868. He died in 1872. He was a leading figure in community affairs for twenty years and Ardlie Street in Warrnambool is named after him. His family home was Wyton, site of the old convent at Emmanuel College today. Lewis Gilles, important in the early history of Tasmania as a bank owner and breeder of cattle, came to Warrnambool in 1854 as the first resident Police Magistrate. He remained until 1866 when he went to England (the occasion of his presentation of this book to John Ardlie). He died in 1884 in South Australia. Gilles Street in Warrnambool is named after him.This book is of high significance because of its connection to two very important early residents of Warrnambool – John Ardlie and Lewis Gilles. This is a hard cover book of 336 pages. The cover is brown with gold ornamentation and lettering on the front cover and spine. The pages are gilt-edged. The first letter of each hymn is ornamented and there is an illustration covered with tissue paper on the first page. One page shows silverfish damage and the cover is partly detached from the binding. The cover is frayed in places and a little stained. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. ‘Presented to J. ‘Casallenroc’, 4-8 Lorne Parade Built in 1904 and occupied from that date by Mr Frank & Mrs Blanche Cornell. Photo is of Mr Cornell with 2 of his children on the veranda. He was a keen gardener, usually doing 2 hours’ work before going to work. He was a director of Buckley & Nunn, having worked up from a position as shipping clerk. He died in 1917 at the age of 47 years from a stroke. Mrs Cornell had a large orchard. Children were Frank (who accidentally drowned at Frankston beach), Lorna, Patience (Mrs Brewer) and Ruth (wife of dentist, Dr David Ellis). A lemon scented gum in the garden was planted by the Cornells having had its trunk bent by the baby. It grew with a bent trunk. Frank May gained employment with the SEC on 1st July 1950 and was initially placed at Mount Beauty as a clerk. In September 1950 he transferred to a similar position at the Rocky Valley Dam construction site. He worked from October to April at Rocky Valley but then moved to Bogong Village as the construction site was closed during the winter. In October 1951 he returned to Rocky Valley but in November 1951 government funding cutbacks forced the SEC to he and many others from the Kiewa Hydro-Electricity Scheme were transferred or retrenched. Frank was transferred to the SEC in Colac where he worked as a meter reader. During his time at Falls Creek, Frank was a member of the Bogong Ski Club and enjoyed many adventures skiing on the High Plains.These images are significant as they depict an early SEC working skiing at Falls Creek.Two black and white images of Frank Mayfrank may, sec falls creek, bogong ski club

Miss Elaine Howell was born in Beechworth. Her mother was born in Stanley and her father in Myrtleford. Her mother's father was born in England and her other grandparents in Australia. She is one of four daughters. Miss Howell completed school and went on to the Convent to do her leaving. She then learnt shorthand typing and got a job at the shire where she was the clerk to the Shire Secretary. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Miss Elaine Howell provides an insight into a life of an educated Beechworth woman in around the 1950's she also provides a perspective from the town shire (the complaints and plans that occurred throughout the year). She went to two schools to further her education and learnt how to shorthand type. This skill provided her with a job at shire as clerk to the shire secretary. This is the only job she ever had. Her story also offer significant insight into Beechworth life and the dances and job prospects at the time (which was not a lot in the 60's). This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. This is a program of the Centenary Procession that took place in Warrnambool in 1947 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the city’s founding in 1847. It was originally intended to celebrate the 100th anniversary in 1940 but these celebrations were postponed because of World War Two. In 1947 centenary celebrations were held but on a less lavish style. 1947 was a more appropriate year as 1847 was the year of the first land sales for Warrnambool and the arrival of the first European settlers in the town. The 1947 celebrations included a Grand Procession which was estimated to have been watched by 20,000 people. A similar number saw the bonfire and fireworks display in Albert Park the same evening. The celebrations lasted a week and included a choral thanksgiving festival in the Botanic Gardens, a massed band display and a ‘Warrnambool Can Make It’ exhibition of local manufactures. The well-known historian and Town Clerk at the time, Henri Worland took a prominent role in the organizing of the celebrations. This little booklet is of considerable importance because it contains a short description of the floats and the names of those connected with the various floats of the Warrnambool Centenary Procession of 1947. It not only gives us a better idea of what and who were in the procession but it now enables us to better label the many photographs we have of this procession and to identify the people in the photographs. The program is a valuable source of information for historians. It also is a good example of the type of celebratory procession that was popular 70 years ago. This is a paper program of the Warrnambool 1947 Centenary procession. It has four pages and a buff-coloured cover. The front cover has a sepia-toned photograph of the first car purchased in Warrnambool (1906) and on the back cover there is an advertisement for Lane’s Bus Services. The inside front cover has an advertisement for Guyett and Sons Furniture Store and there are other advertisements throughout the pages. The printed text on buff-coloured paper gives details of the 29 floats in the ‘Mechanized’ Section and of the 27 floats in the ‘Back to the Horse Pageant’ Section. The pages were stapled but the staples have been removed. There has been some silverfish damage. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. "Edenkillie" was the home of Frederick Jowett, Caulfield's shire secretary and town clerk from 1887 to 1921. The Outer Circle Railway's Oakleigh section opened 1890 and closed 1895. Victorian Heritage database (as of 26/10/2021) HO45 Edenkillie https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/35545 "Edenkillie" at 37 Neerim Road, Glenhuntly, is a substantial two storeyed polychrome brick villa, built for Frederick Jowett, municipal secretary, in 1890. It has aesthetic, historical and social significance. "Edenkillie's" aesthetic value derives from its survival as a substantially intact example of a common villa form expressed in polychrome brickwork. Its historical significance lies in its association with Frederick Jowett, Shire of Caulfield secretary and town clerk for over three decades. The Duke and Duchess of York (future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, later Queen Mother) visited Australia in April/May 1927 for the official opening of Parliament House in Canberra. Before leaving Australia they passed through South Melbourne and Port Melbourne on 11 May 1927 stopping for brief civic receptions outside both town halls. The royal couple stood in their open car during both receptions. This photograph shows the royal couple standing in the car with Port Melbourne citizens and dignitaries in front of the town hall. The tall man to the left of the chauffeur is Syd ANDERSON, Town Clerk, Cr William HOWE, Mayor is to the right of the chauffeur with presumably Mrs HOWE next to him.
