Strip shopping and ample parking were features of suburbs in the middle of the twentieth centuries. Cars were still considered a luxury, although that would soon change, and local, independent shops serviced local areas.During the post-war years, the municipality of Moorabbin experienced a population boom. The 'newcomers' were predominantly returnees from the war who were marrying and establishing families; those from the old inner-suburban areas who were moving away from rented premises to establish their own homes on cheap land. The 1950s were a time of immense growth for the area now known as City of Kingston.Black and white photograph of the intersection of Centre and East Boundary roads, Bentleigh East. Several cars are visible both in the foreground and background, and the intersection includes a roundabout. The street is lined with poles to carry electricity cables, and the roundabout is dotted with four poles for electric street lights.Handwritten in blue ink: 56 - 230 Handwritten in red ink: 82% Handwritten in black ink: Ch. 6shopping strip, cars, suburbs -

Melbourne Legacy
Document, The Shrine of Remembrance : History
After the first world war there was a decision made to create a memorial. Legatees were involved in the process at various times and capacities. In particular Legatee Kemsley was vocal in idea of a structure over a utilitarian memorial (such as a hospital or a park) - see letter at 01182. Also that 25 sites were selected for consideration in 1921. Although the St Kilda Road site was favoured early on, by 1926 there was pressure to change to a "provision of square" and Cenotaph at the intersection of Spring and Bourke Streets. 'Melbourne Legacy decided to support and work for the Shrine of Remembrance as the National War Memorial.' It is notable that the initial design 'incorporated certain features of the Mausoleum at Hellicarnasus, which is listed as on of the Seven Wonders of the World and, also, many of the refinements of the ancient Grecian architecture.' This note describes how the ray of light shining on the Rock of Remembrance was 'something of an afterthought' as Philip Hudson (one of the architects) saw something similar on a trip abroad, in a chapel in France. The final paragraph is significant 'All materials in the Shrine are of Australian origin. Indeed, with the exception of the marble in the Shrine floor which was quarried at Carloola in NSW, and the Hawksbury freestone in the bas relief panels, the remaining materials are all of Victorian origin.' This account is written by a Legatee who was heavily involved in the building of the Shrine. It is presumed to be Legatee Kemsley but it is not certain (the handwriting might be a clue if more documents written by him are found). Also the date is not known. Items were in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different items relating to the Shrine of Remembrance - including discussions on its location and design. Labelled 'Shrine of Remembrance S1 - S14' it was part of an old archive numbering system, that showed there has been efforts in the past to collect, order and save items of Legacy's history. (01181 - 01190, 01206 - 01211).A record of the events that led to the construction of the Shrine of Remembrance as noted by a Legatee shortly after. There was an effort to record historical events for the "Archive Committee" which collected this an other documents relating to the Shrine together in a file (see items 01181 - 01190, 01206 - 01211)Four white foolscap pages of black type recording major events in the history of building the Shrine (starting from 1921). Plus several hand written notes which were the draft version, including notes on an envelope and on scrap paper of various sizes.Handwritten 'S1 History Shrine' in red pen on top left of first page. To perpetuate his memory and achievements The Field Marshal Sir Thomas Blamey Memorial Fund was established by a number of eminent persons in late 1954. The fund was to make periodic awards to members of the Australian Defence Force selected for outstanding qualities of leadership. The article was part of collection of items about bequests made to Legacy put together by a former archive committee. The number B10 stood for 'Bequests' and document number. Document - Report, Future Requirements Committee: third and final report (H53), 1978
A report by the Future Requirements Committee dated 11 October 1978. The Committee members were(Chairman): I.W. Anderson, E. Cohen, A.N. Kemsley, L.D. King, J.M. Poulton, R.L. Simmons The Committee notes that its recommendations would probably be resisted by some Legatees but were necessary to meet the changing needs of dependants. They highlighted cancelling the supply of firewood, cessation in 1978 of the Badge Day appeal in Melbourne and the special Christmas promotion, and the Christmas Garden Party at Government House. Boys and Girls classes to be phased out, and Blamey House and Stanhope residences to be closed in 1979-80, with dental care to cease in 1980. They also recommended that more use should be made of labour available from ALL Legatees, and Legacy staff should be strictly monitored as the changes were brought into effect. After two World Wars, Melbourne Legacy recognised that the need for their traditional services was changing and they needed to be vigilant about the transparency of their expenditure.5 photocopied foolscap pages - poor qualityPage 1: 'Copy President from ER' in red ballpoint, 'H53' in blue ball point, 'B' in black.review committee, planning -

Swimsuit, Miss Watersun
Polish-born designer David Waters first began producing swimwear in 1952. His mother Halina had recently opened a stall at Melbourne Queen Victoria Markets and was looking for swimsuits to sell; unable to find any she liked, she asked David to design something. He began making swimming costumes using his mother's sewing machine, in between his shifts working at a knitting factory. He had soon set up a small business in his parents' home, cutting patterns in one room while a machinist sewed them together in the next. His company, which he named Watersun, would become an iconic Australian swimwear label. During the early 1960s, Watersun developed its "Unquestionable Bra", an inbuilt moulded bra which was marketed as giving wearers a more natural bustline than other labels. The company was also known for its matching swimwear and beachwear, producing dresses, kaftans, tops and skirts in identical colours and prints to those used for many of its swimsuits. By 1967, the company was reportedly one of Australia's two biggest swimwear manufacturers, with over one hundred employees. Watersun was sold to Ada Productions in 1984 and was later acquired by Trackerjack Australasia. This swimsuit is believed to be one of a large quantity of samples, seconds and unsold Ada Productions stock donated to Brighton Historical Society in late 1990 by Brian Samuel, who worked at the company between 1979 and 1990.Blue and white gingham one-piece swimsuit. Short overskirt. Two rows of white cutwork lace form a frill along neckline and down either side of back straps, which fasten with buttons.
