Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. Armadale is an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 7 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Stonnington local government area. Armadale Police Station opened, in Melbourne Police District, on 11 May 1885. Its original location is unknown, but in 1890 it is listed in the Sands & McDougall directory as at 295 Hight Street. From 1985-1920 it was located at 20/22 Auburn Grove, 1925-1930 at 769 High Street and 1935-1946 at 3 Cheel Street. The station closed on 28 January 1946. The sub-division east of Orrong Rd was incorporated into Malvern Sub-district and west of Orrong Road into Prahran Sub-district. In a special 1930 issue of the Victoria Police Gazette the Armadale Police Station was described as a seven-roomed brick dwelling with a tiled roof on land measuring 127' x 104' x 98'. There was also a bathroom and W.C., a wash-house, office, and a lock-up (one cell). This is probably a description of the Cheel Street police station. This doily is typical of items of household linen in popular use in the 19th and early-to-mid 20th centuries. It was a tradition for brides to have a 'glory box' containing linen and embroidered and crocheted articles to take to their new home. In the Words of donor, Betty Stone, … “These crocheted and embroidered articles cover a period of three generations- ie. Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees, Ann (nee Lees) Dale, and Daisy Elvena (nee Dale) Welsh. All three were accomplished needlewomen; also, both Sarah Lees (born 1844) and her daughter, Ann (b 1865) crocheted a wide variety of articles for use in their homes. One of a group of slides taken by members of the Society of built heritage in Kew in 1979-80. The selection of subject matter reflects the priorities of the period. The colour of some slides has degraded. This particular slide is of 'Fairholme' on the corner of Barry and Fellows Street. The building is listed by the National Trust (Victoria). The citation on the Historic Buildings Register states: 'Fairholme is of State architectural significance as a distinctive free Romanesque Revival residence. Built in two stages, 1889 for solicitor Edward Smart and early this century for importer, J K Meritt, the singular architectural character of Fairholme is achieved by combining window bays and groups of windows with a two-storey gabled porch. The deliberate and distinctively asymmetrical composition is emphasised by Art Nouveau pressed cement detailing (coprosma) on a bowed balcony and the two-storey timber verandah, which is typical of the Edwardian period. The architects were Reed, Henderson & Smart (1889) and C Gordon McCrae (c 1900-1). Internally a grand entry hall with inglenook, staircase and gallery follow the Arts and Crafts quality of the exterior. George (1895-1976) is on the left; he lived in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills. He was a clerk and aged 20 when he enlisted on 16 November 1914. He was the son of James Rayment Jnr and his wife Harriet Frances (nee Ratten). He was assigned to 3rd Light Horse Brigade, Headquarters and embarked on TRANSPORT A16 Star Of Victoria on 25 February 1915. He returned to Australia 22 March 1917. His brother James A Rayment (SERN 3106) was a carpenter and enlisted on 14 July 1915, aged 26. He embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic on 24 November 1915, assigned to the 5th Field Company Engineers. He won a Military Medal "For gallant work in constructing M.G. emplacements" at Pozieres. Recommendation date: 13 September 1916. Also a Military Medal "For devotion to duty under all circumstances and for efficient handling of working parties." Recommendation date: 14 June 1916. He returned to Australia 13 April 1919. Both are listed on The Shrine in the Surrey Gardens. Alan PEASCOD (1943-2007). Born England. Arrived Australia 1952. Alan Peascod was one of Australia’s most highly acclaimed ceramic artists. For over 35 years his work has been at the forefront of the Australian ceramics movement, developing radical techniques previously unexplored with his developments in unusual glazes and firing methods. His creative repertoire includes dry glazed vessels, alkaline glazes, majolica, saturated metals, and many post firing finishes. Alan's work with the very difficult reduced lustre technique is highly regarded. He was taught the method by Professor Said El Sadr in Cairo, Egypt in 1972 and this led to lifelong research of the technique throughout the Middle East and Europe. His work in the field led to the completion of his doctoral studies at the University of Wollongong in 1994. This study also led to satirical figurative sculpture themes dealing with the human condition. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Sybil CRAIG (18/11/1901-09/09/1989) Born London, England Arrived Melbourne 1902 Died Melbourne, Victoria Sybil Frances Craig was a student of John Shirlow in 1920 who introduced her to French avant-garde artists such as Matisse and Gauguin. In 1945 Sybil Craig became the third woman to be appointed as an official war artist. Based in Melbourne she worked for fourth months at the Commonwealth Ordinance Factory at Maribyrnong, becoming the first female artist to paint women working in the munitions factories. In her work Craig was attracted to many changing ideas and continued to explore line, rhythm, colour, simplicity and design. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. In 1945 Sybil Craig became the third woman to be appointed as an official war artist. Based in Melbourne she worked for fourth months at the Commonwealth Ordinance Factory at Maribyrnong, becoming the first female artist to paint women working in the munitions factories. In her work Craig was attracted to many changing ideas and continued to explore line, rhythm, colour, simplicity and design. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Gareth SAMSOM (19 November 1939- ) Born Melbourne Sansom describes a desire to constantly surprise and challenge himself as an artist. He had his first exhibition in 1959. His paintings of the 1960s were characterised by a distorted use of line, shape and colour and were influenced by abstract expressionism, Francis Bacon and Sidney Nolan. Over time, his work has also drawn on punk, dada, Basquiat, T.S. Eliot, urban graffiti, classical Greek philosophy and art theory across a variety of media ranging from drawing, printmaking and collage to photomontage and photography. Sansom lectured in Art at the Ballarat Teachers' college, and was appointed Head of Painting at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1977-1985, and Dean School of Art at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1986-1991. He was artist-in-residence at the University of Melbourne in 1985, which was when he resumed his full-time painting practice with a series of large works on canvas. The Federation University Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.'Looking for God in Abstract Art 2' is a play on the debate over the respective virtues of abstraction and figuration that has preoccupied artists and critics for more than a century. Sanson has always walked a wobbly line between the two, adroitly avoiding falling headlong into either camp. It is also a gentle dig at the pretensions to higher spiritual meaning in abstract art. In the centre are two photographs, one of rubber masks and the other of the artist in a lurid fright wig and mask and using a spray can like a young tagger. These images, where the artist wears a mask and teeters on bright red platforms, are wonderfully ludicrous send-ups of the 'fine art' of painting. Ewan ROSS Ewen Ross grew in the Wimmera and aims to manifest the changing nature of this landscape in his work. This region is affectionately known as the land of the big sky and it is from this viewpoint looking down and across, which inspires his sense of image making. Occasionally he refers to stories that occurred from times past but generally these images reflect the current state of this land. From 1976 to 1978 Ewan Ross undertook a Diploma of Art (Painting) at Ballarat College of Advanced Education (now Federation University. He was awarded a Graduate Diploma of Education in 1982. He was a Curatorial Assistant at the Art Gallery of Ballarat from 1979 to 1981, and taught Art at Horsham Technical School between 1983 and 1985. From 1986-1897 Ewan Ross taught at the Wimmera Institute of TAFE, and was Lecturer in Painting & Printmaking at the University of Ballarat (nor Federation University from 1998-2005. In 2008 Ewan Ross was a finalist in the Fleurieu Biennale Art Prize. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The lightstation was connected by telephone to Cann River in 1928. The lighthouse retains ablack Bakelite telephone attached to the lantern room wall on timber box mount. It has a crank handle with instructions for its use on the crank dial, and a coiled handset cord, which probably dates the phone to just after 1949 when coiled examples like these began to replace fabric covered smooth cords. An image in 1991 shows the phone in the lower level of the lantern room It is one of four telephones at the lightstsation; with two others attached to walls in the assistant keepers’ quarters, and one in the head keeper’s quarters. The four phones formed an intercom system that facilitated communication between the lightstation buildings. Cudgewa Line -The Cudgewa railway line opened in stages between 1889 and 1921. The first section from Wodonga to Huon opened on 10 September 1889. It was extended to Bolga on 18 July 1890, Tallangatta on 24 July 1891, Shelley on 13 June 1916 (the highest station in Victoria), Beetomba on 10 April 1919 and Cudgewa on 5 May 1921. The line had 1 in 30 grades and trestle bridges that have been heritage listed. In 1919, the line was used to carry materials for the construction of Hume Weir, and three years later a spur line connecting Ebden to the weir was opened. In the 1960s, Cudgewa became the railhead of materials for the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The last passenger service from Wodonga to Tallangatta ran on 30 September 1961. The turntable and passenger platform at Cudgewa were abolished in 1976. This fish plate came from the rails of the Cudgewa Line at Gordon Roy's hut which was situated behind Perry's Stump Hotel outside Wodonga. The hut was used as an office with the points lever outside to switch trucks to different tracks on the Bandiana and Cudgewa lines.This item is significant as it was part of the railway line to Cudgewa which played an important role in North east Victoria carrying freight during the construction of the Hume Weir and the Snowy Mountains Scheme.A section of flat plate. Mr Robert Crone Phillips was born in Stanley, Victoria and later moved to Wangaratta where he worked at Pinkertons and Sons. On 1 April 1912 he purchased the grocery, ironmongery, and wine and spirits business conducted in Sydney Street, Wodonga, by Mr. D. M. Stavely. This business was beside the old Wodonga Police Station. He received a spirit merchant's license under the new Licensing Act in the Wodonga Licensing Court on 20 March 1912. This was the first occasion on which spirit merchants' licenses have been granted by the court. This license was renewed annually until November 1920. On Friday 15 July 1921, a fire occurred in which Phillips grocer’s shop and a neighbouring draper’s shop, owned by Mr. R. W. McLeish, were seriously damaged. In August 1921 Robert Philips filed for insolvency with assets of £660 10/ and liabilities of £1126 19/6. The cause of insolvency listed was loss sustained by fire and the pressure of creditors. Mr. Phillips retired to Wangaratta. He passed away in 1948. The demijohn is of local significance as it represents an artefact from a local business. Its provenance is clear due to the inscription in the item. This medal was awarded, posthumously to Pte. Dash. He was born in Burwood(a small town near Sydney). He joined the Army 12/6/1915. Strangely, he did his medical inspection in May. He is listed as being in 1st Battalion from 18 May until 5 August. 6th August he arrived at the Battalion (on the Gallipoli Peninsular). He was wounded 7 August, whilst delivering ammunition, by machine gun with wounds to the neck and shoulder. From there, there was no record of him and was catergorised as Missing in Action". His father received notification with scroll 21/12/21. He received his Victory Medal Jan 18 1923. Pte Dash is interred in the Lone Pine cemetery, in Turkey. He was originally interred in Brown's Dip cemetery, but this site was deemed unsuitable for cemetery due to the changing landscape due to flood waters. Pte Dash was discovered in Lemnos, convalesencing after being hospitalised, 1st October 1915. However the board of inquiry made no mention of his sighting in Lemnos. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. He outlined which legatees suggested different things - such as Selleck suggested the name of Legacy, Doolan put forward the child scheme. He also recorded birth dates of some Legatees: Selleck born 20/8/1895 ; Savige 26/6/1890 ; Ellet 30/3/1880 ; TW White 26/4/1888. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin about Legatee Jim Gillespie being honoured by RMIT naming a building after him. Date is not known but likely to be 1969 or 1970. The article mentions 'an honour was conferred on Legatee (Past President) Jim Gillespie when the Governor and Lady Delacombe opens a new wing of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and called it 'The Gillespie Wing". The magnificent building of 12 stories accommodates 2490 persons (2290 students and 200 staff). A page of the programme was set out to list Jim's decorations, war service, and professional achievements and awards and his immense contribution to the RMIT extending over more than 30 years. Also that in 1968 in recognition of his proud record of service to the profession he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Institution of Surveyors Australia, and is the only person to be so honoured at the time. The article was written by JHBA (Legatee Brian Armstrong). The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees.
