A pocket watch is a watch that is made to be carried in a pocket, as opposed to a wristwatch, which is strapped to the wrist.. Stem-wind, stem-set movements are the most common type of watch-movement found in both vintage and modern pocket watches.In 1857 the American Watch Company in Waltham, Massachusetts introduced the Waltham Model 57, the first to use interchangeable parts which cut the cost of manufacture and repair. Most Model 57 pocket watches were in a coin silver. The two glass water containers/bottles are thought to have been used in railway passenger trains in the c. 1900s. The Wodonga train line and train station opened in November 1873 when the section of the line from Wangaratta to Wodonga was completed. This item was whittled as a continuous piece from a broomstick handle by George Lynch. George had a long career with Victorian Railways. The son of a railway man, George grew up in St Arnaud near the railway line. He watched the engines go by and dreamed of being an engine driver. He started working as a cleaner in 1907. Through hard work and further study, George worked his way up to become a locomotive driver. He moved to Wodonga in 1917. At the Victorian Railways Institute examinations, George won four gold medals for Engine Working and Westinghouse Brake In 1925 he was appointed as an Instructor. George was one of four senior drivers who in rotation drove the Sydney Limited. The other drivers were Ray Murphy, F. Hobbs and George Padgett. They all lived with their families in Wodonga. George drove the first Spirit of Progress from Spencer Street to Albury. He made railway history in 1937 when the Sydney Ltd ran non-stop from Albury to Spencer Street in 3 hrs. 25 mins, clipping 25 minutes off the previous record. He retired at the age of 65 in 1953 and died at the age of 74.This item is significance because it was made by a long-serving locomotive driver based in Wodonga.A chain made by whittling the handle of a broomstick. The whippletree consists of a loose horizontal bar between the draught animal and its load. These scales are a common type which would have been used in an industrial, farm or produce merchants of the day. many items were sold in bulk with little packaging. With a top weight of 30 lb, items weighed would have been bulky type items.The Avery company manufactured weighing equipment and scales from the 1730's. Scales of many different descriptions were used in sales over the years and these are a good example. These scales are painted black with a circular plate which is slightly dished. it has three chains attached to a metal bar at the top which is serrated and has a counter weight on it. Another attachment to the bar has the hook from which it would hang.The number 1 is on the counter weight.The serrated bar has graduated markings on it in half pound increments up to 30 lb.
