Thomas assisted building the Tawonga to Bright road and drove cattle to the Bogong High Plains before marrying in 1887 and raising 7 children, 2 of whom, Ernest and Albert enlisted in WW1 in 1916. This pair of embroidered badges were worn on the sleeves of the red City of Brighton mayoral robes until Coat of Arms were granted in 1970 by the British College of Heraldry. Brighton was first incorporated as a borough on 18 January 1859, it became a town on 18 March 1887 and was proclaimed a city on 12 March 1919.Two oval shaped City of Brighton mayoral robe badges, embroidered and mounted on red felt. Councilor James Baird was elected as a member of the first Ballarat Shire Council in 1863 becoming the first Shire President for 1863-64,and was on council until 1865.He was then re-elected to council in1868 until 1887.He then served three more terms as President 1874-75 ,1875-76, and 1879-80.This original photo is of the first President of the newly formed Ballarat Shire. The Ballarat Trades Hall building was erected in 1887 - the foundation stone being laid on 15 October of that year. The photographs show new flag poles that were installed to the building on 26 October 2018. Flags shown in the photos are the Red Flag and the Flag of the Southern Cross. This photo was part of the Hill family's collection. Notes indicate that it was probably taken by Walter Hill, son of William Valentine Hill of 10 Pembroke Street, Surrey Hills. Walter Ormond Hill was born in 1887. No death record has been located. It is not known where the photo was taken. John Oxley was a shoe and butchers’ knife manufacturer, who was listed in Whitecroft UK in 1822 . By 1825, he was based in Hollis Croft. John apparently died in about 1837. He had two sons – George (1808-1879) and James (1811-1881) who took over the business. George moved to Indianna, USA and in 1868 James continued to manufacture 'Cooks’ and palette knives and steels" Oxley’s trade mark was a butcher’s knife crossed with a sharpening steel (and the letters ‘JO’). The firm stayed in the family until 1960. Early settlers were self reliant and repaired their own equipment for kitchen,dairy, farm, horses, carts using various tools . A second charge of selling to Mrs, Hannah Charlton a poison without having obtained the signature of the purchaser to an entry as required by the act was also preferred against the defendant. Both cases were taken together. Mr, Donovan appeared to prosecute, and Mr. Cole for the defence. Senior-constable Connell deposed that he knew the defendant. On the 24th of October last an inquest was held at East St. Kilda relative to the cause of the death of a man named Charlton. A packet bearing the label " Rough on Rats," which was found. in the deceased's bedroom, was produced at the inqiry, and afterwards handed over to Mr. Blackett, Government analytical chemist for analysis. The verdict of the jury was that the deceased died from the effects of arsenical poisoning. Hannah Charlton, a widow, residing in South Yarra, said in September last she purchased a packet of "Rough on Rats" from the defendant's assistant. Witness was not asked her name, place of abode, occupation or for what purpose the poison was required; neither did she observe the assistant make any entry in a book, She did not attach her signature to any document, and was not asked to do so. The packet was purchased for the purpose of poisoning rats. Cuthbert Robert Blackett, Government analytical chemist, stated that Constable Ballantyne handed him the packet produced. Witness made an analysis of the contents, and found it composed of arsenic, slightly coloured with a carbonaceous matter. The mayor announced that there was a doubt in the minds of the magistrates as to whether the defendant could be held guilty under the law, but they thought the prosecution had attained its object by making known the fact that "Rough on Rats" is a poison. Happy Valley was originally called Lucky Woman's. The School opened under the name of Happy Valley in 1883, and the brick building probably dates from that time. Miles Barraclough was the head teacher from 1873 to 1887. When mining ceased the population declined and the land reverted to grazing. The School closed in 1940. "Showboat" was based on a novel by the same name and follows the lives of the crew and performers on the "Cotton Blossom", a Mississippi River showboat from 1887-1927. The music was written by Jerome Kern and the lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was first produced by Ziegfield in 1927. Sawbridgeworth was built in 1887 by Arthur Wiseman. The house was named after the little English village in Hertfordshire where the Wisemans had lived for hundreds of years. Arthur's brother, Albert, built his mansion, called Ashleigh, which also fronted Widford Street. Dr. Allen De Vilbiss (1841-1917) of Toledo, Ohio, developed his first atomiser around 1887. This device was designed to allow for dissolving cocaine, as a local anaesthetic agent, in oil, and spraying into the nose and throat. In the early to mid 20th Century, The DeVilbiss Company began making perfume atomisers instead of medical ones. Tram tracks can be clearly seen in this image. Horse trams were introduced late in 1887, the line up Sturt St to the Lake and Gardens being built first. Note these tracks do not have any electricity above them - electric trams did not appear until 1905. St Andrews Kirk steeple was erected in 1884.Previously unknown image of Ballarat. The date of this map or plan is uncertain but it appears to be from the early to mid 1870s. One of the landholders identified on the plan, James Allan of Coimadai died suddenly on the 9th July, 1874 (see Bacchus Marsh Express, 11 July, 1874, page. 3). The first permanent Catholic Church was a slab construction covered in Canvas. It measured 40 x 16feet. A new church designed by George and Schneider was begun in 1856 and completed in 1857. However this structure was demolished in 1887 due to faulty foundations. The current church, the largest weatherboard church in Australia, was designed by Wilhelm Vahland and was blessed 1st July 1888.Serving for 150 years: St Killian's Catholic Church will celebrate 150 years of service next weekend.
