This is a photograph of the Saunders Family at Orbost 1888-89. It is Arthur and Agnes Saunders with their children, Beatrice, Cyril, Hilda and Vera. Arthur Scott Saunders was born 1864 in Orbost and died 3.12.1913 in Orbost where he is buried. He was the son of Son of Thomas Frederick Saunders and Lucy Beard Scott. He was a storekeeper at Orbost, a member of the early Show Committees, a Rechabite in 1893, and was a member of the Board of Guardians of the Church of England from 1894 to 1913 where he served as secretary and treasurer of the Board. His wife was Agnes Louisa Stuart Morriss who was born in 1862 and died 26-11-1938 at East Malvern and is buried in . Orbost cemetery. She sold the business in 1919 to Mr J. H, V. Dale. She left Orbost with her two daughters for East Malvern in April 1927. Saunders General Store was opened in 1900, overlapping part of the present Mensland and Coultons. The ―Melbourne Store‖ refers to it being a branch of their Melbourne store. The shop was burnt down in the early 1930‘s. James Rogers was born in Wallaroo, South Australia, but came to Sailor's Gully, Eaglehawk with his family as an infant. He was converted in a Salvation Army meeting at Bendigo. He became a member of the Primitive Methodist Church at Eaglehawk. Electric kettles were invented by the English to speed up tea preparation. In Australia fancy ceramic electric jugs quickly became a status symbol. During the Great Depression era anyone who could offer you a cuppa from a beautiful Electric Kookaburra Jug was considered to be doing well. Made by Nilsen Porcelain Australia in the 193Os, these kettles were unique for their charming art deco bird shape. Nilsen Electric Kookaburra Jugs are now regarded as a classic Australian icon prized by collectors. Oliver John Nilsen was born in Collingwood, Victoria in 1894. In 1916 he began his own electrical business, Oliver J. Nilsen & Co. (later Oliver J. Nilsen (Australia) Ltd). Nilsen's manufactured goods included such diverse products as transformers, bearings, battery chargers, bells, buzzers and gongs, porcelain ware, fuses, insulators and neon signs. This is a novel written by Ethel Patricia Stonehouse under the name of Lindsay Russell. She was born in Nhill in 1883 and was educated at Charlton State School. From 1894 on she wrote verse and short stories and worked as a journalist in Melbourne. She published her first novel in Melbourne in 1912 and lived for a time in London where she met Dr John Scott whom she married in 1914. After the First World War she came to live at Mortlake and her novel writing ceased. Most of her novels are about women rebelling –against Catholicism, Calvinism, the English class system and the restraints of marriage. Her railings against the Catholic Church and the oppression of women caused her to be a controversial figure, especially in Mortlake, but she was a popular novelist with one of her books, ‘Smouldering Fires’, selling over 100,000 copies in Australia alone. She died in 1964. No details on the inscription or the recipient of the book, ‘Isie’ have been found. The name, ‘Glasgow’ suggests that the book at some stage was connected with the Glasgow family of Wangoom. They were important local dairy farmers and cheese makers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.This book is of great interest because it was written by an Australian woman and one who lived for many years in Mortlake, a town close to Warrnambool. The connection with the Glasgow family is also of interest. This is a hard cover book of 320 pages. The book has a dark blue cover with gold lettering on the front cover and spine and some gold scroll work on the front cover. The book has a Prologue and 22 chapters and contains advertisements at the front and the back of the book for other books published by Ward, Lock & Co. There is a black and white illustration at the front of the book with a piece of tissue paper covering it. The page at the front of the book that contains an inscription is detached. The inscription and another annotation are written in black ink. Mary Ann Craddock married David George Knott (1894-1948) in 1923. He was born at Lockwood. The following from the electoral rolls:- 1. 1925 David and Mary Ann were living at the Olive Branch Hotel in Mitchell Street and both are listed as furriers; 2. In 1931 Mary Ann is living in Eadie St. and David is listed at 121 Wattle Street, again both furriers. 3. 1937 both are living at 123 Wattle St. but Mary Ann is now listed as home duties. 4. 1942 Both are living in Spring Gully Road where David died in 1948 before he is buried at the Bendigo cemetery. NB. Both 121 and 123 Wattle St. are very big homes, possibly boarding houses at the time. In 1923 their shop was situated in the Lansell building on the corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves St. It was on the upper floor and all stock was destroyed in a fire. In 1931 the address for their business is listed as Mitchell Street. Earlier in 1915, in the NSW Police Gazette, David was listed as a deserter from the army but no army records have been found. This card depicts the Yarra River at Eltham circa 1910. It was addressed to "Mr J. L. Brown, "Elthamville", Tinning Street, Brunswick" most probably from an extended family member. From the same collection as accession no 00779, (Pond near Eltham Park) and no. 00780 (Eltham, J.H. Clark Photo - dated 20 May 1911). Sending postcards to family and friends including short messages was a common form of communication in the early 20th century. Photographer: J.H. Clark John Henry Clark was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). He and his brothers, William Charles Clark (1872-1945), Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914. Following death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved, the premises demolished, and a new house was under construction in 1915. John set up business independently in 1914 operating out of 29 Moor Street, Fitzroy where he is registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued his practice as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. Around 1930 John changed professions and opened a small cobbler's shop in 1931 near the pond opposite Dalton Street adjacent to the Jarrold family cottage. He never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop, maintaining a close relationship with Mrs Jarrold for the rest of their lives. His bootmaker shop remains today beside the Whitecloud cottage and is one of only three remaining shops in the area from the early 20th century. There are a couple of images of Eltham taken by Clark Bros. in the Eltham District Historical Society collection, one such example being Hunniford’s Post Office with Miss Anne Hunniford out front (EDHS_00140 - marked on the back of the print, Clark Bros., 25 Thomas St. Windsor), which would date this image between c.1894 and 1914. Other early images of Eltham taken by John Henry Clark are marked on the face “J. H. Clark Photo” and it is assumed these are dated between 1914 and 1930. This is an invoice sent from the Warrnambool New Brewery (Walter Sheldrick & Co.) to Captain Selby. The Bill was for two dozen ales ordered on November 4th 1873 and for 6 dozen ales ordered on November 24th 1873 (cost £6-18-0). The bill was paid in February 1874. The Warrnambool New Brewery was established in 1868 by a company headed by a Warrnambool butcher and hotel proprietor, Walter Sheldrick. It was at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets. After the first year the company was wound up and Walter Sheldrick and Thomas Price and, initially, two other partners, continued on the business. Sheldrick died in 1876 and his son Richard took over the business. By 1892 he had left the business and the brewery was operated by Edward Price, Edmund Hutton and William Trigg. In 1894 the brewery was sold and continued on until it was closed in 1922. The labels of Warrnambool Sheldricks ales had been known throughout the Western District for over 50 years. Captain Selby came to Warrnambool in the late 1860s and lived at ‘Clifton’ on the banks of the Hopkins River not far from the mouth if the river. He was a keen sportsman and was prominent in the Anglers Society, the Rowing Club (as President) and the Gun Club (pigeon shooting).As this is an original 1873 docket it is of considerable interest. It refers to the Warrnambool New Brewery, a prominent business in Warrnambool for over 50 years and to Captain Selby, well-known at the time in sporting circles. We have a good collection of other Captain Selby dockets. This is a buff-coloured piece of paper, an 1873 invoice sent from the Warrnambool New Brewery (Walter Sheldrick and Company) to Captain Selby of Warrnambool. The docket has printed red lines and both printed and handwritten material in black ink. One of these items is an 1894 letter written by the artist Tudor St George Tucker regarding one of his artworks in the Warrnambool Art Gallery collection. The other eight letters were written between 1889 and 1897 and document the controversy of the time when the authenticity of the art work by Louis Buvelot, The Waterhole at Coleraine, in the Warrnambool Art Gallery collection, was questioned. The Warrnambool photographer Daniel Clarke was querying the authenticity of the art work in the Art Gallery but evidence in the form of letters from George Folingsby of the National Gallery in Melbourne and from Louis Buvelot’s widow, Caroline-Julie, confirmed that there was confusion over the number of art works that Buvelot had executed with a similar theme. It was eventually proven that the Buvelot art work was genuine. The public spat was largely played out in the Warrnambool Standard but these original letters fill in the gaps of our knowledge on the subject. The letters came into the possession of George Lance who was involved with the Warrnambool Mechanics Institute /Art Gallery in the 1880s and 1890s and was the secretary of these institutions from 1892 to 1901. The letters were then handed on George Lance’s grandson, Bruce Morris, a well-known Warrnambool historian who was the editor of the Warrnambool Standard from 1946 to 1968. The view is looking southeast from near Eltham Road (present-day Sherbourne Road) across Bolton and Bridge streets towards the village of Little Eltham running down the main road (Maria Street) . On the immediate right is Mrs Mary Jane Smart's family home located on the north side of Bridge Street at the intersection with Bolton Street, facing Bolton Street (now part of present day Brisbane Street and occupied by the Kitchen Design Centre). An original early settler's cottage, it was built by Mary Jane Smart's parents, Edwin Bailey and Jane (nee Matthews). Mary Jane Smart was born in the cottage. She married an Englishman, Alexander Wilson Smart who disappeared to Western Australia in the early 1900s in search of gold. He ultimately married again in W.A., committing bigamy and then committed murder and was hung in 1911. Ada Pearling Pickering was a descendant of George Box family who migrated c 1850 and established market gardens in the Brighton area of Dendy's Special Survey 1841. Stephen Charman, 1821-1906 a market gardener, donated land for the first Methodist Chapel, Cemetery and School in Charman Rd Cheltenham 1855. The enrolment was 36 pupils with Mr Frederick Meeres as Teacher. 1863 the school is called Beaumaris Common School No 84 with 70 pupils and Walter Meeres as Teacher. 1869 another 2 acres in Charman Road were granted by the Education Board and brick building built . 1872 State School 84 Beaumaris was increasing enrollments and 1878 a new brick school was built to accommodate 174 pupils and the name changed to Cheltenham State School No.84 1894 Mentone State School No.2950 amalgamated with Cheltenham SS No.84. 1910 the buildings were in disrepair, overcrowding was increasing and renovations were made 1912 with further additions in 1925 and 1937. Post WW11 extra prefabricated Classrooms were added as enrollment increased to 1038 in 1955.. Cheltenham East State School 4754 was opened as housing development spread over the City of Moorabbin . This site was originally that of Cobb and Co's livery stable and although the Cobb and Co office in the Shamrock Hotel closed in 1886, the livery stable continued with the proprietors, Robertson and Wagner and Co. The site was bought in August 1898 by the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Co, proprietors of the Bendigo Butter Factory. On this site the company built an ice tory, refrigerating works and cool storage for other businesses. The Bendigo Butter Factory was begun in 1894 in Lucan Street, opposite the distillery, by Mr McIntyre of the Rochester district. This site included a butter printer and Weigher supplied by Cherry and Son of Gisborne. In September 1895 the Butter factory was floated as a public company and was registered by Mr J H Curnow. However the factory was not financially sound at this point and entered into receivership in 1896. At this time it was bought by the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Company of Melbourne and was placed under the management of James Cumming, an experienced dairyman. The company had previously appointed him as their inspector of creameries. By 1911 he was the propietor of the Flora Hill Butter Factory. and was later killed in a car accident in May 1937. By 1919 the manager was Douglas Orson Oldfield (1868-1944) (NB at birth he was registered as Dugald and throughout his life he was also known as Dan).Colour photograph. Clara Jane Matthews was born in 1870 as the eldest daughter of Robert Matthews. She married William Frederick Busse on the 5th of December, 1894 at St Columb’s church, Hawthorn. Clara and her husband lived on Main Street in Chiltern, and her husband was a Clerk of Courts in Chiltern and Wodonga throughout his life. Clara and William also owned a 640 acre farm called Clairedale Park, four miles (6.5km) outside of Barnawartha. They had both crops and sheep on the property, and adopted innovative farming practices. It appears that Clara was heavily involved in the farm business, as she is listed as a purchaser of sheep in multiple stock reports between 1914 and 1918. This is very unusual for the era, as women were not generally involved in stock markets, especially if her husband was still alive. Clara’s husband’s work at the court likely meant that he wasn’t able to travel to the markets in order to purchase stock. Clara’s taking the reigns in this manner was highly unusual, and signals just how strong of a woman she must have been. Clara Busse died in Chiltern in 1968, when she was 98 years old. She is also the mother of Wilfred C Busse, who was an author and a member of the Chiltern Athenaeum. This photograph is of a woman who lived most of her life in Chiltern, and undoubtedly contributed to the community of the town within her 98 years. She will most likely be remembered as the wife of William Frederic Busse, Clerk of Petty Sessions, or as the mother or Wilfred Clarence Busse, author and barrister. Basil Watson departed Melbourne on 24th January 1917, on the initial leg of Australia's first 'barnstorming' aviation tour, promoted by the entrepreneurs Albert Sculthorpe and R. Sissons. During the trip, which lasted over a month, Watson visited Warrnambool, Hamilton and Mount Gambier, before returning via stopovers at Casterton, Hamilton, Warrnambool and Camperdown. At each town he presented a public flying demonstration for crowds of spectators, featuring his usual aerobatic displays with feats such 'looping the loop', upside down flying, somersaulting and 'perpendicular nose dives', generating much amazement and admiration. The promoters had received approval from the Postmaster General's Department to carry an experimental airmail consignment on the return journey from Mount Gambier, and Watson landed in Albert Park on his arrival back in Melbourne on 27th February, carrying over 1,000 pieces of airmail collected from each of the towns on route. Much of the mail was in the form of official souvenir postcards commemorating the event, which were reposted on arrival to local addresses in Melbourne. Churchward, M. Shillinglaw family members that were part of the Salvation Army included Elizabeth who married John Docherty in 1894, Catherine who married Edward Henry Bottle in 1897 and Jane who married William James Sommerville in 1887. Photographer Mark Joseph Allan operated from 318 Smith Street Collingwood from 1887-1901 Edward Henry Bottle previously married Eleanor Unsworth in 1875. They had four children, Edward John (1876), William Embassy (1879), Henry Charles (1881) and Ethel May (1883), all born at Bacchus Marsh. Eleanor (Ellen/Helena) died 1883 at Bacchus Marsh. He married Catherine Shillinglaw in 1897. CABINET 1866-1905 The Cabinet photo was introduced in 1866 in answer to a demand for a larger format photograph which could be mounted for a cabinet or on the wall. They were 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches (11.5 x 16.5 cm), more than twice the size of the cdv. They cost about twice as much as a cdv but eventually displaced them. They were not extensively produced until 1880 and had ceased by 1905. World War One honor roll of former students of the Happy Valley State School No 376 who enlisted. The original honor roll no longer exists. There is a framed photograph of it in the current Happy Valley School building now used for community events. This honor roll would appear to be made before the end of WW1 as Ernest Alfred Yung died in September 1917 at Ypres. His brother George Alfred Yung returned who was also in the same battle returned to Australia. Honour rolls were also made to encourage more men to enlist. Margaret Young studied at Ballarat West Art School in 1894. This was one of Ballarat's Art schools. In 1907 they merged and became Ballarat Technical Art School (BTAS). Margaret became a teacher and taught for many years at BTAS, specialising in woodcarving. At the end of the First World War, Honour Boards were requested to be made to honour the men who had served. Ballarat was the main provider of these boards. Margaret Young was one of the people responsible for the carvings and specially mentioned for her work by the Caulfield School in Melbourne. On her resignation, Margaret moved to Adelaide. At the past students Reunion Celebrations in 1930, Margaret Young was to be the Guest of Honour. Unfortunately she was unable to attend due to ill health. As the Yarra became unsuitable as a source of water, several attempts were made to find alternative sources for the growing population of Melbourne. It was not until 1891 that the efforts to sewer Melbourne came to fruition with the setting up of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), now known as Melbourne Water. From 1891 until 1992, it was the responsibility of the MMBW to safeguard public health by providing a sewerage system and a safe water supply system. In 1992, The MMBW merged with a number of smaller urban water authorities to form Melbourne Water. The township of Cocoroc was created in 1894 at the Metropolitan Sewage Farm (now the Western Treatment Plant) to house the workers it employed. The name 'Cocoroc' means 'frog' in the language of the Wathaurung people — the Traditional Owners of the land the treatment plant was built on. By the early 1950s there were nearly 100 houses, a town hall, football ground (and team), swimming pool, tennis courts, four schools and a post office, and by the 1970s some 500 people were living in Cocoroc. As it became too expensive for the MMBW to subsidise, Cocoroc was abandoned. By 1973 most of the houses and other buildings were demolished or moved to Werribee. All that is left now of Cocoroc are two small, empty, concrete swimming pools, a few weatherboard sheds and a big iron water tank. This photograph detailing an exterior view of the North Cocoroc State Primary School, is historically significant as it captures children at play within a purpose built community. The School that was one of four was built to educate the children of the MMBW workers. The Jubilee History was printed and taken from The Times, Main St. Stawell. Mr. E.C. Grant was Treasurer for 29 years. A tablet placed on the wall above the vestry door to perpetuate the memory of Mr. E. C. Grant, one of the greatest benefactors the church ever had. The inscription reads: In memoriam/ erected by the congregation of St Matthew's/ in memory of / The Stirling worth of / Edmund Craigie Grant/ who died 4th July 1894/ aged 63 years. He was a sincere Christian/ A most Liberal & generous giver/ and a true lover of his kind. / Well done good, and faithful servant Matthew XXV. v23. Mr. W.J. McMullin was a secretary of the Sabbath School - later became superintendent a position he held for 26 years. Up to the time of his death - Faithfully discharged his duties. Mr. W.J. McMullin had the distinction of serving as an elder for 26 years from 1883 until the time of his death in 1909. Mr. W.K.
