Administrative record - Tramways student passes
Sandhurst and Electric Tramways Company introduced the first trams to Bendigo in June 1890. These were battery operated trams but it soon became obvious that the battery life was unable to copy with Bendigo's hilly terrain. The trams were converted to steam in 1892. In 1899 the tramways were sold to the Electric Supply Company of Victoria and in 1903 the trams were converted to electricity. After WW1 the SEC was formed and took over the running of the trams. With the increased usage of cars, patronage of the trams began to drop off after WW2. In 1972 the tramways closed as a commuter service. The Bendigo trust then restored trams and infrastructure and began the tourist/talking trams.State Electricity Commission of Victoria Provincial Tramways: student passes One box containing various types of tram tickets. Book, The Oxford Annual for Scouts, 1927
This book was a prize given to Arthur Rogers in 1928. Arthur George (Bill) Rogers was the grandson of Joseph Rogers, a Warrnambool plumber and the son of Arthur and Agnes Rogers of Warrnambool. He worked in the advertising department of the Warrnambool Standard newspaper for nearly 50 years and died in 1995. It was closed in 1994. The donor of the prize was South Warrnambool Football Club. This club was established in 1902 and has competed in the Hampden Football League since 1933. It is a successful club with many of its players going on to play in A.F.L./V.F.L teams. This book is of interest because of its 1920s connection to the South Warrnambool State School, the South Warrnambool Football Club and a local South Warrnambool resident, Bill RogersThis is a hard cover book of 196 pages. National Wool Museum
Taxidermy Sheep, Sir Lindsay, c1980
The Saxon Merino, as can be seen with Sir Lindsay, is physically the smallest of the Merino strains, cutting the lowest weight of wool (3-6kg); however, the Saxon Merino is without peer in the quality of fine wool produced (14 to 18 microns). This wool is prized by the textile industry, producing the highest quality cloth resulting in strong financial returns. The Saxon Merino was first imported into Australia by Eliza Forlonge. She and her family didn’t even live in Australia when she travelled to Germany to select prime Saxon sheep in preparation for her move to Tasmania in 1830. In doing so she played a fundamental role in developing Australia’s fine-wool industry.A Saxon Merino stud. Small size body and short legs with white fleece. Booklet with Photographs, Stan Baulch, Cowabee, 1978 (booklet)
These items concern the history of the Baulch family ownership of Cowabee, a large grazing property in the Riverina in N.S.W. In the 1870s Samuel Baulch, the son of pioneer Kirkstall settlers, Francis and Ann Baulch, established a property in the Macarthur/Hawkesdale area called Rose Park. In 1893 he acquired Dunmore, a nearby property, and Rose Park became part of that estate. In 1910 Samuel Baulch purchased Cowabee in N.S.W. and Stan Baulch, the son of Samuel and Eliza, later managed Cowabee for some years. After Samuel’s death Stan Baulch and his two brothers split up Dunmore and Stan acquired the eastern third which he named Rose Park. Cowabee was sold in 1922. This booklet and associated material is of some historical interest as a summary of the history of Cowabee, one of the properties owned by the Baulch family of the Western District in the early 20th century. It will be of some use to researchers, with the photographs an added bonus. .1 This is a booklet of 41 pages with a buff-coloured paper cover with a black tape binding. The front cover has a title in hand-printed lettering and the back cover has a red stamp (partly obliterated). The booklet contains typed information on Cowabee Station. .2 This is a small envelope containing six black and white photographs, all with handwritten information on the back. .21 & .22 These are two loose sheets of writing pad paper with handwriting in blue ink. .1 Cowabee .2 Snaps Cowabee Church Cemetry(sic) & pise buildings left there cowabee station, n.s.w., baulch family western district victoria, history of warrnambool -
