For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. In 1995 a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. President Luscombe laid a wreath at the Lone pine tree. The article in the Answer says: "In spite of a somewhat 'windy' day for out "Back to Caulfield" race day, it was another success. Our President Legatee Brian (Lucky) Luscombe and Mr Peter Lawrence, Chairman of the VATC both made a speech and each laid a wreath at our 'Lone Pine' tree - a descendant of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine'. This book is a novel by John Whitson published in 1907 and it could have belonged to either Thomas Redford Senior or his son. Thomas Redford Senior (d. 1909) was in the produce business with Frederick Stevens in Warrnambool in the 1860s and in 1879 he took over the business under the name of T.Redford and Co. This business operated at the corner of Fairy and Timor Streets. Thomas Redford Junior was a Major in World War One. He was killed at Gallipoli and his body was recovered from the site of his death by members of his company who were also from Warrnambool. Notable among these men was Paul McGinness, a war hero who was later to found the airline Qantas. This book is of interest as it belonged to a member of the Redford family, prominent in business in Warrnambool and in military exploits in World War One. The book gives us a idea of which novelists were popular reading in the early years of the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 283 pages. It has a light brown cover with lettering in black, gold and brown, a colour image of a rose on the spine and a colour image of a house and a car on the front cover. There is a full page colour plate at the beginning of the text pages and this is covered with protective tissue. The inscriptions are handwritten and printed in black ink. At the back of the book there are advertisements for other books published by Little, Brown and Company. The binding is coming loose at the top edge and the cover is very faded and stained. ‘T. (see in the footsteps of Pompey p. 173-4. Roy was awarded the College Cup a prestigious sporting trophy in 1912. (see VC000054) The College Cup was awarded to the competitor who won all three 120, 250 and 440 yard races. For more information about the College Cup see Ring-A-Roo December 1993. In the 2000s Legacy released a range of Legacy Bears to expand the merchandise available for sale during Legacy Week and at other fundraising opportunities during the year. This bear is in an Australian World War 1 uniform and slouch hat. He was given the name Digger. The term "digger" was military slang for Australian and New Zealand soldiers. It became closely linked with the principles of mateship during World War I. This Digger bear reminds us of the endurance, courage, ingenuity, good humour, hardiness, and resourcefulness the ANZAC forces showed during the Gallipoli campaign and other WW1 campaigns. Following the death of his only child Mervin on 23 December 1916 at Magdhaba Egypt, Mr Justice Higgins HB has a small number, possibly as few as six, of memorial books made. He sought permission from Signaller JC Campbell to use a selection of photographs taken at Gallipoli and Egypt. The photographs together with typed copies of several letters written by Captain MB Higgins 8th ALH make up the book. It seems likely this copy of the book was given to the 8th Light Horse Association for safe keeping. He returned to military service in 1931 as Squadron Commander in the 4th Light Horse. Following service at Gallipoli the regiment was broken up with squadrons going to France as Divisional Cavalry Squadrons of 2nd, 4th and 5th Divisions. The regiment was reformed as firstly 1st Anzac Corps Mounted Troops and later Australian Corps Mounted Troops. The regiment was raised as 13th Light Horse (Gippsland), a Citizen Forces unit following WWI, and trained as a cavalry regiment till August 1940, when it converted from horse to mechanised initially as 13th Motor Regiment then 13th Armoured Regiment. It trained in Victoria and, as the Japanese threat to the mainland declined, was disbanded in October 1943 with men going to other units. The 11th Australian Infantry Battalion AIF was was among the first infantry units raised for the AIF during the First World War It was first raised at Black Boy Hill Camp in Western Australia on 17 August 1914 and recruited from the militia units. The picture of the 11th Battalion at the Cheops pyramid in Egypt in 1915 was taken just before the landing at Anzac Cove. Not many of the soldiers in this picture survived the 8 month campaign. After the Campaign on the Gallipoli Peninsula, the 11th Battalion went on to serve with distinction in France and Belgium from 1916-18. They returned to Australia at the end of the war and disbanded on the 5 February 1919. The Battalion was awarded a Kings Colour for it’s service during the war which was held in the of custody the Militia 2/11th Battalion. This picture was taken just before the landing at Anzac Cove during the First World War. Not many of the soldiers in this picture survived the 8 month campaign. Found in garden shed of Mr Harry Barratt [WWI Gallipoli] and donated by his grandson. In 1877 Swan island was designed to defend shipping in Port Phillip and Hobson's Bays. The scheme, involving massive expenditure, comprised a forward defence system of forts at Port Phillip heads dominated by Fort Queenscliff and South Channel Fort (artificial island), and a network of coastal batteries. Some development of fortification had occurred in the 1850s, but it was the impetus of the Jervois-Scratchley reports which led to major work being undertaken in the 1880s. The overall defence plan involved a combination of guns, mines (known as electric torpedo) and ships to defend the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. A Vale notice that was published in the Bulletin in 1986 on the death of Legatee Bill Scott. He joined Legacy in 1938 and was very active in with the children's classes and the Anzac commemoration for students. It says: "It is clear that Bill Scott’s contribution as a Legatee has been of the very highest order and an inspiration to all with whom he served because of his knowledge and enthusiasm.” In World War One he had served with the 4th Light Horse Regiment on Gallipoli and in France and Belgium. he was wounded four times and finished with the rank of Sergeant. In the Second World War he served as the Directorate of Hirings at Army Headquarters. Legacy has run a programme since the 1970s of propagating saplings taken from seeds of pine descended from a pine tree from Gallipoli and giving them to various clubs, schools and town councils. Melbourne Legacy wished to mark the friendship and goodwill by the members and management of Huntingdale Golf Club as far back as 1933, by presenting a Lone Pine sapling to Huntingdale Golf Club in 1992. L/- G. M. Swan (President 1992) is on the far right. A similar photo was featured in the Widows' Newsletter in July 1992. This three-photograph group is the fifth in a series of records of items in the collection of Edgar Dawson DCM. Dawson was the Regimental Sergeant Major of 57th Battalion, AIF. C Company of the 57th was composed of men drawn from Echuca, Eaglehawk and Bendigo. The postcards are from his personal album, and many are annotated in Dawson's hand with explanatory notes on the subject. Refer to Cat No 893 for his service details. This is a trophy awarded at a camp of the 4/19 Light Horse Regiment. This regiment appeared to have been based in the Corangamite region of the Western District and included regiment members from Warrnambool. It is not known exactly what type of competition was an ‘Officers Flutter’. Light Horse regiments were cavalry regiments that were established at the time of the Crimean War in the 1860s. During the First World War the 4th Light Horse served with distinction in France, Gallipoli and Palestine. In 1948 the 17th Prince of Wales Light Horse, the 19th Yarrowee Light Horse and the 4th (ex 20th ) Corangamite Light Horse amalgamated to form a revived 4/19 Light Horse. This regiment kept alive the tradition of the original Light Horse units, becoming part of the Australian Army Reserve and members served in Vietnam and East Timor. This cup is of interest as an example of the trophies awarded for competition at a Light Horse regiment camp in the 1930s. This is a metal cup (silver amalgam)) with two side handles and a narrow stem attached to a silver base. The cup is attached to a brown Bakelite stand.
