Many families at this time obtained and framed these military service certificates. This was part of the empire spirit of 1914. The prose at the top of the certificate is a quote from Act 5 scene 7 of William Shakespeare's "King John".Black and white certificate commemorating the war service of former WHS student Lt. Steel. A number of symbolic images including two men or horseback, a queen, a broken cart, a portrait surrounded by flags and lions and three rifles surround an photograph of Lt. Steel. Bordering the photograph is a modified Australian Government symbol, a laurel wreath, the Australian and British flags and two crossed rifles. Above the Portrait is a FOR KING AND EMPIRE banner and a quote from 'King John', and below is Lt. Black and white film showing a Legacy Demonstration performing for Lord Dunrossil. Viscount Dunrossil was Governor General 1960-61. Demonstration for him and his wife by Legacy children at a primary school showing library, craft classes, exercise classes and woodworking. Both he and Lady Dunrossil interacted with the children, who appear overawed by their visitors and the fact that they were being filmed. There are also Legatees present. The girls wear a light coloured uniform with a Legacy logo embroidered onto the left hand side of the chest. The boys wear a shirt, tie and pullover. The lady who appears to be the headmistress is wearing a hat and gloves, whilst Lady Dunrossil wears hat, gloves and fur stole. 7 mins 17 secs. 16mm B&W no sound. His brief year in office as Governor General ended when he passed away suddenly 3 Feb 1961. According to an article in Trove, he toured Gippsland in August 1960 and attended a school and a festival, the proceeds of the festival was donated to Legacy and other charities. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. Provenence is unknown but contains potentially rare photos. A comprehensive record of the types of events provided for Junior Legatees in the 1940s. Events such as the Government House Christmas parties and Annual Demonstrations. Also a record of the classes offered to girls and boys. There are photos of Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for school students that has been held annually by Legacy in April. It helps educate and promote the observance of Anzac Day to students. Some of the photos are Junior Legatees that joined the armed forces in the second World War. Pages 7 and 8 show the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester to Legacy. They were in Australia to start his term as Governor General of Australia - until 1947. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. It was the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" event held on 7 April 1993 - the 70th Anniversary year for Legacy. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The photos show a group of students with wreaths walking up the steps of the Shrine. Also one of the Governor of Victoria, Richard E. McGarvie inspecting the Cadet Guard of Honour, with school choirs on the steps. And inside the Shrine. Possibly 1971 or early 1972 prior to closure. 1 - High St Eaglehawk with Primary School hall behind. 2 - Tram 28 from another tram's window - note no driver. 3 - trams 28 and 30 in McCrae St with the Bendigo Technical College building in the background. 4 - Tour trams turning from Bernard St into View St with the Five Lions Hotel in the background with a Fosters Lager advertisement. Book - 92 pages plus card covers, a historical survey of the Sebastopol district. Originally written by E.D. Jenkins for the Borough of Sebastopol's centenary in 1964, reprinted with additional text by Lloyd Jenkins to recognise the 125th anniversary of the Borough covering the years 1965 to 1989. Book covers mining history, churches, the Borough Council, early days of the district and various points, eg cabmen, horse trams and electric trams, schools, the Mechanics Institute, various clubs, fire brigade, hotels, industries, and programme of events to celebrate the centenary. The second part of the book, covering the period is laid out in a chronological order with forward by Cr. Donald, the Mayor with many photographs. Centre page has a large map of the district showing the many mines, leads, roads and other historic locations. Tramway photos are horse tram No. 7, ESCo 17 at depot (all on file) and a photo showing a horse tram heading north along Albert St. with the shopping centre in the background - see image. Photo taken just after the tram has crossed the roadway. Two Newspaper clippings pasted onto a single sheet of paper with two Punch holes on the left hand side. First clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, Thursday 19/8/1971 of two photos of a bogie trams in Sturt St. The first one with tram 40 derailed near the intersection of Sturt St with another bogie tram behind. Both trams showing destination of "Special". The photos are associated with a tram tour for Ballarat North Technical School. See Reg items 3765, 3766 for actual prints of the Courier photographs. Second cutting dated 23/7/71 discusses the replacement of the trams with buses, the various dates and trams being sought for preservation after closure, including the City of Ballaarat, the Borough of Sebastopol and the BTPS. Quotes Mr. Pellas, the manager of the Mid-Western Electricity Supply Branch. Newspaper cutting has been altered by cutting to fit the required space on the sheet, and possibly has left out a line in the last column.In red ink in on the first cutting, adjacent to the photo caption "19/8/71" and on second cutting, "23/7/71" in red ink on the right hand upper side of the cutting.
