A photo of Legacy President Neville visiting group of young legatees at a gymnastics class in Footscray. There are 12 boys, of various ages, in gymnastics gear, some holding books or certificates. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00867) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. Many were published in the September 1953 newsletter. Dick Richards was a Principal at the Ballarat School of Mines. John Tippett was the President of the Ballarat School of Mines CouncilPhotocopies of three letters written by Dick Richards to John Tippett. .1) One page typed letter dated 31 October 1971. The letter relates to the Albert Medal and George Cross. .2) One page typed letter dated 11 November 1983. The letter thanks John and Anne Tippett for their birthday wishes. It also mentions J.L. Cope and the role he played in Dick Richards recovery from severe physical collapse in August 1916. Richards writes 'he nursed by like a mother for a protracted period. ...' The letter ends with 'I ain't no bloody hero but I thought you would like to know. .3) One page typed letter dated 03 November 1984. It is a general letter which mentions Tony Gaze, Irvine Gaze. Irvine GAZE joined the RAF during World War One and was shot down near at luftwafer camp. A German airman saw Irvine Gaze's white polar ribbon and invited him to a meal where the President was Hermann Goering. Tony Zaze was a Spitfire pilot during World War 2 and was shot down about 100 miles from where his father was shot down. Played by Dr Phil Law during the 1930s, "for dances and other functions, while teaching at Clunes, Talbot, Creswick, Learmonth, Newtown, Smeaton, and while teaching at Elwood (at Eltham, Gisborne and Sunbury." including on many of his expeditions to the Antarctic. Phil Law was a dedicated jazz reed player and band leader in his early years as a country school teacher. His brothers also played. Gift of Dr Phil Law - 1999. Dr Law died in Melbourne on 28 February 2010 at the age of 97.Owned and played by Dr Phillip Garth (Phil) Law AC, CBE, for dances and other functions, while teaching during the 1930s, and on many of his 28 expeditions to the Antarctic. These are racehorses that have all been paddocked together for some weeks prior to the forthcoming Piney Creek Amateur Picnic Race Club's annual meeting. Traditionally the Ballarat School of Mines has fielded a strong Australian Rules Foootball team. This team includes Danny Frawley. Frawley went on to play and coach Australian Rules Football at the highest level. He was the longest serving captain of the St Kilda Football Club and enjoyed a career from 1984–1995.
