The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. These models are of single horse drawn military gun carriages and accessories.Three gun carriages: 1. A brown four wheeled wooden model of a gun carriage for military use with a white horse. The carriage wheels have black rims with grey painted spokes. There is a brown storage box at the front for the driver with a brown vinyl padded seat.Three wooden slats form the footrest. A gun cleaning rod and lighter rod are attached to the back of the narrow support tray towards the back wheels. The saddled horse is linked to the carriage by a wooden shaft. A gun carriage is a frame and mount that supports the gun barrel of an artillery piece allowing it to be maneuvered and fired. These platforms often had wheels so that the artillery pieces could be moved more easily. 2. A brown large two wheeled gun carriage with no horse. The wheels have grey painted spokes and black rims. There is a cleaning rod and a lighting rod attached to the carriage shaft near the wheels. This cocktail cabinet is part of a special bequest to the Mont De Lancey Museum of hand carved furniture and items made by Mr Franz Striezel by his grandaughter Mrs Dorothy Adamson. Dorothy was a friend of Nella Lord (nee Sebire). Dorothy passed away in 2007. It was to be known as The Franz Striezel Collection. Franz Streizel came from Germany in 1886 and was one of the three recognised craftsmen (Art Carvers) in Australia who contributed to the wood carvings in public buildings and honour boards throughout Australia. The National Gallery at their request had two small panels and a tobacco jar (some of his work), donated by Mrs D Adamson. They considered these pieces highly valuable.A beautifully hand carved ornate wooden cocktail cabinet featuring two female carved busts, carved mythical beasts on the front, sides and two doors of the cabinet underneath the drop down mirrored shelf. The shelf is attached by two gold linked chains screwed onto the sides. Two drawers at the top are elaborately decorated. The cupboard doors at the bottom open to show a shelf inside. Many women in Australia sewed at home and Madame Weigel's patterns spanned nine decades, closing down in 1969. Simplicity and Butterick patterns are still made today. Simplicity was founded in 1927 in New York, Butterick is the oldest pattern company in the world, founded in 1863. One source states that Ebenezer Butterick is credited with creating the first multi-size sewing patterns in 1892. It is now been purchased by another company.15 Assorted dressmaking patterns: 11 from the 1960's and 70's, 3 vintage - Simplicity, Butterick, Style and Madame Weigel. The attached card states - 'Mother's knitting stick'. There is a brass hole one end with four brass nails where the tip of a knitting needle is inserted for support. The curved and fits into a belt or tape around the waist. Knitting was carried out on curved metal needles, one of these needed to be kept rigid by being held between the hand and knitting sheath held at the side of the body either tucked into a belt or held under the armpit. The sheath would allow someone to to knit with one hand whilst performing chores with the other. They also took the weight of the work and stopped stitches from slipping off the bottom of a double ended needle. 'When stockings were first made, black or white were the only colours available. White was usually for Sundays. Lisle was the only type made for many years. Later colours became available'. A brown piece of thick cardboard with five different coloured stocking mending threads wound around branded product cards: white, cream, tan, brown and black. There is a typed explanation piece of paper, see the inscription below. Brands are - 1. The "Creschene" mending Four Strand, Specially made for Lisle, Silk and Art Silk Hose (white thread). 2. Two Steeples Hosiery (black thread). 3. Two samples of Myrene Hose Mending Fashion Shades Superior Quality ( three tan colours). 4. Astor Product Made in Australia, Every Home Super Mercerised Hose Mending.
