During 1877 - 1891 Ballarat College accepted enrolments from female students. The school holds the original register of this period and notes that Catharine Procter entered the school in 1878 when she was 15. This Pewter Mug Collection is a set of 32 trophies won by Australian Alpine skiers Ross and Malcolm Milne between 1959 and 1964. Ross and Malcolm grew up on their family's tobacco property in Myrtleford, and began skiing at Falls Creek at an early age. They were both taught by Austrian Sigi Haberzettl, who was chief coach at Falls Creek for 17 years. Ross went on to win the North-Eastern District Ski Association (NEDSA) Junior Championships for three years in a row. In 1961 Ross was a member of the Australian team which competed against New Zealand in the Inter-Dominion Championships. In 1963, he won the Downhill and Alpine Combined title at the Australian Championships, while placing second in the Grand Slalom event. Ross Milne was selected in the Australian team that participated in the 1964 Olympic Winter Games at Innsbruck, Austria. A few days before the opening of the Games, on 25 January 1964, he tragically lost his life when he crashed into a tree during a training run for the Men's Downhill. He was only 19 years of age. Malcolm became a member of the Australian Junior Ski Team to Japan at the age of 14. He won all of the NEDSA children’s races and won the State Title in 1966. Malcolm continued to achieve great success, winning the Australian Championships for the next five years. At the end of 1969 he won Gold in the Val d'Isere FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Downhill, Australia's first Alpine Ski World Cup medal. He was on the Australian National Ski Team for eight years, representing his country at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games and the 1966 and 1970 World Championships before turning professional in 1972. Malcolm Milne was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985. In 2000 he received the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to skiing. Arthur William Preston was born in 1912. Following his ordination into the Methodist Church he was stationed in Mareeba and Townsville in North Queensland. From 1944 to 1948 he was Field Secretary for the Queensland Methodist Centenary Celebrations, conducting evangelistic missions throughout Queensland and assisting in raising the sum of 100,000 pounds for development work within the Queensland Methodist Church. From 1948 to 1963 he was superintendent of the West End Methodist Mission in Brisbane. In 1963 he was awarded the O.B.E. From 1963 - 1966 he was Associated Minister at the Adelaide Central Mission. During his ministry in Adelaide he established and directed the Life Line Telephone Counselling Service. During 1966 and 1968 he was Associate Minister in the Glen Iris Circuit, Victoria. From 1968 until his retirement at the end of 1981, Arthur Preston was the Superintendent of what is now Wesley Central Parish Mission (Central Methodist Mission prior to Church Union in 1977. In 1982 he was awarded the Order of Australia. Cr William Howieson of the Borough of Kew was also a member of the Kew Bowling Club (1880-1998). The club was located in Wellington Street as part of a complex that included the Kew Recreation Hall. In 1998 the Club merged with Auburn Heights Bowling Club. The trophy has a broken handle and a clear break in the crystal container.This is the earliest example of a trophy deriving from the Kew Bowling Club in our collection. It was awarded to a noted civic figure in local government in Kew. 1988: 12 November. “Bush Nursing” Our float in the Eltham Community Festival Parade won the award for the best display for the second year running. We received a trophy donated by the Billabong Family Bistro, Lower Plenty. The theme of the float was the Eltham Bush Nursing Hospital. The float was prepared by Bruce Ness with some help from other members. A number of members contributed with costumes and other props. Hospital equipment was kindly loaned by the Judge Book Village. As with previous parades members of the Victorian Folk Music Club joined us, their music providing a welcome addition to the float. Thomas Kennedy aged 14 was awarded this medal in 1892 for the bravery he showed in rescuing members of his family from the flooded Werribee River on the 3rd August 1891. The Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper on for 30 July 1892, page 2, reported the awards ceremony with this description, 'Bronze medals of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia were awarded at the Melbourne Town Hall on Monday evening as follows: Thomas Kennedy, of Maddingley, near Bacchus Marsh, aged 14 years, for the risk he incurred in procuring assistance to rescue his father, mother, four brothers and sisters from being drowned during the flood of the Werribee River, on the 3rd August, 1891. He at daybreak swam across a strong current, and procured a boat, then rode a horse attached by a chain to the boat, and was returning thus to the house when he was washed off the horse, and with much difficulty rescued'.
