This was gifted to Robin William Smallwood on his retirement. Smallwood graduated from medicine in the mid-1950s and decided to make a career in anaesthetics, was granted Fellowship in 1965, became a member of the Board of the Faculty in 1976 and became Dean in 1986-1987. It has been made by Arnold & Sons of London who were medical instrument manufacturers and became Mayer & Meltzer.Silver tube in two pieces, which form an innner and outer tube. The inner tube is curved with a flat plate at the top and two squared hooks (handles) coming off the plate. The outer tube has been spliced, creating two separate curved sides with an oval, bowl-like plate at the end, with an oval shaped holed punched through either side. Pru Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers & McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. In 1918, Punch reported the sale of the Palmyra Estate. ‘Adjoining the Findon Estate at Kew is Palmyra, one of the most charming localities in this most desirable of all suburbs. Palmyra has frontages to Findon, Bakewell, Carson and Stevenson streets. The AETA published calendars on an annual basis through to 2005, promoting electric transport in Public Transport. The photo shows the two different liveries adopted by the Franchised operators M>Tram and Yarra trams when the system was split into two different companies. Features B2 class trams 2078 and 2021. The hand written note, dated 28-11-2005 by Keith Kings was with the calendar and records that Ken Craven was not able to arrange production for a 2006 calendar. The house was built in 1910. The Clota and Sans families were part of a group of families of Spanish (Catalan) background who lived around Surrey Hills, many of whom are buried in Box Hill Cemetery. The house was built for Antonio and Josepha Clota and passed on to their daughter Josephine Sans and her family. Antonio's full name: Antonio Eusebio Miquel CLota (1869-1940; died Surrey Hills) had 3 brothers who came to Australia with him. Louis Clota (1864-1925); Marcus Clota (1866-1940) died Surrey Hills; Eusebio Clota (1869-1919). Their parents remained in Spain. Josephine Clota and Kim Sans had photos taken on the front entrance to the house when they were married on 9 May 1919. The wedding was reported in Punch.Black and white photo of the home of Mr and Mrs Antonio Clota; later the home of their daughter Josephine and son-in-law, Kim Sans and family. It shows bluestone curb and channelling in Union Road and a substantial wire mesh fence. The street tree looks like a plane tree and is a relatively young plant. Designed by Raymond Lavender, American Printing House for the Blind, it was produced between 1962-1982. A modernized Braille writer, the Lavender allowed the paper to exit through the cover in a way similar to a typewriter. The keys are rectangular and the design is compact with no protruding parts. The cover, which is an integral part of the design, snaps on the case. The case and cover are made of Cycolac, a high impact resistant plastic. After the writer was in use for some time, it was discovered that the plastic material tended to warp and production was discontinued. This album was likely compiled by Freda Oxley, a friend of the Sellers who stayed with them at the Mission for a few years. The couple arrived in January 1925, replacing Mr and Mrs Gurney Goldsmith and stayed until January 1929. The photographs bear the stamp "Herschell's Prints - Pathe Agents". Charles Richard Herschell founded a film Production studio of the same name operating at 31 Agnes Street, Jolimont from 1925. A similar album by Freda Oxley with similar handwriting in white ink was donated to The National Library of Australia by her niece.
