Photograph - Construction of the electric tram line in Riversdale Road, Surrey Hills, E.J. Dower, 1916
One of a series of photographs, taken by Edgar James Dower in the second decade of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Olinda, his family later moved to Surrey Hills. He worked as an adult as a clerk in the city office of the Metropolitan Gas Company, and in his role as a 'collector', he was able to photograph scenes including the construction of tramlines and associated buildings in Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Surrey Hills. Later he established a real estate agency with his brother - the E.J. Dower Real Estate Agency, Dandenong Office. The image is an historically significant record of the development of transport infrastructure which was used to connect Victorians in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This development resulted from increases in population and the consequent extension of Melbourne's suburbs. The photographs, both individually and collectively, richly detail the labour of workers and the tools and machinery used to create and extend Melbourne's tram network in the years preceding and during World War 1.Digital copy of an original oval mounted photograph of the construction of the tracks for the new electric tramline in Riversdale Road, Surrey Hills. Photograph - Fred Rochow Railways Collection - Employees' car park at Wodonga, 23 August 1988
The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Employees' car park at Wodonga Railway Yards with train tracks in the foreground. The railway yards and the railway tracks ran through the middle of Wodonga from its opening on 21 November 1873 until it was closed on 9 November 2008. Photograph - Overhead Track lighting Nicholson St Coburg, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), 1960
Photo shows extensive track lights on the left side of the single-track Nicholson St East Coburg tram line with W2 class tram 473? inbound on route 1 just to the north of Grant St. This section of track was considered dangerous and to alleviate the problem of inbound or southbound tramcars not being visible well in advance to northbound motorists, the MMTB installed the track lights. The Chief Engineer at the 24/3/1960 meeting of the Board advised of the scheme that the track lights would be progressively switched on in advance of a southbound tram. The line was eventually duplicated in Dec. 1966.Yields information about a track lighting system to improve safety on a single line of tramway in East Coburg.Black and white photo, plain backnicholson st, single line, track lights, east coburg -

Orbost & District Historical Society
black and white photograph, February 1971
The 1971 flood was the the worst flood on record. At Jarrahmond it was at least 11 metres and up to one and a half kilometres wide on the flats causing enormous damage to the flood plain. Records say that "The brown floodwater stain in Bass Strait could be seen from passing airliners." Considerable damage was done to railway infrastructure, roads and farms. More information from the APRIL, 2008 newsletter by John Phillips. (see orbosthistory.com.au) The railway line was destroyed and was not expected to be opened for a fortnight. Orbost was cut off by 50 square miles of Snowy River floodwater. This train was being shunted across the viaduct when waters smashed through washing away several trucks sending the crew running for their lives. This is pictorial evidence of a significant local event. It is connected to the history of the railway in East Gippsland.A large black / white photograph of flooded railway yards with a train engine stranded on a small section of track surrounded by water and debris.on front - "1971 Flood, Railway Yards"floods-1971-orbost orbost-railway natural-disasters-orbost -
