Large residence on large elevated block for Frederick Christian Lange (1832-1888) and family in 1870. The architect Lloyd Tayler (1830-1900) designed it in an Italianate style. Over time adjoining allotments were purchased until the gardens covered nearly 15 acres. Lange was in partnership with Emil Thoneman trading under the name of Lange & Thoneman, merchants and general importers. Lange was also one of the local directors of the local Australasian directors for the Swiss Lloyd Marine Insurance Company. William Officer (1835-1913), pastoralist, bought the property from Lange in 1888 for 23,500 pounds. Following Officer's death the grounds were subdivided in 1914 and the house finally demolished in 1940. Cr. W.D. Vaughan in his civic history of Kew includes a chapter (XXXII, pages 132-3) to Town Clerks and Surveyors. He states that H.H. Harrison began his career with the Borough of Kew in 1888 as his predecessor's assistant, becoming Town Clerk on the latter's death in 1901. On his retirement, The Herald on 30 Jul 1938 reported that: "H.H. HARRISON, Town Clerk of Kew, was entertained last night by members of the Metropolitan Institute of Town Clerks and presented with a walking stick and case of pipes, on the occasion of his retirement after 50 years' service with Kew City Council. He began his municipal career as a youth with the Bendigo City Council, and in 1888, was appointed Assistant Town Clerk at Kew. Appointed Town Clerk in 1901, he has held the office for 37 years."This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of Mayors and Town Clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew, for the period 1863 to 1969. The portraits were transferred by the City of Kew to the Kew Historical Society in March 1989. Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford commenced in 1888. By the early 1900s it had 3 subsidiary creameries where farmers delivered their milk. Often the farmers collected the skim milk to feed pigs. At this time bacon was considered to be a dairy product. The home was known as 'Montalto'. It was built by Andreas Hansen in 1888. It was purchased by Dr John Box in 1913 and was demolished in the 1950s to make way for Sythney Court. The property was surrounded by extensive grounds and abutted Surrey Gardens. Anthony Hordern sen. (1788–1869) came from Staffordshire, as a free immigrant in 1823, and the business was originally established as a drapery store in Pitt Street by his wife Ann. The family moved to Melbourne and remained there but a son Anthony junior purchased land in George Street Sydney in 1842 and set up business with his brother Lebbeus. They broke their partnership in1855 and Anthony took his sons Anthony and Samuel into partnership as they became old enough. Anthony Hordern & Sons was the largest department store in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. with 52 acres (21 hectares) of retail space, and was once the largest department store in the world . It also operated one of the largest mail order businesses in Australia. One of their advertising slogans was that they sold "anything from a needle to an anchor". This organ was gifted by the Bethel Community in 1890 to the then Victorian Seamen's Mission, originally founded by the Bethel Union in 1857. The gift was intended to assist with worship. Despite all appearance, this organ is not a pipe organ but a reed organ that works in a similar manner to an accordion. In May 1890, the sum of seventy pounds was put towards the purchase of the organ. The sum being raised via subscriptions. The organ was inaugurated in September 1890. Jabez Carnegie (1832-1892), importer of piano and organs in Melbourne, had made a trip to Europe and Canada in 1887 and had secured the agency of Bell organs. W. Bell & Co were a Canadian organ and piano manufacturer, considered the premier organ manufacturer of the time. W Bell & Co changed its name to Bell Organ and Piano Co in 1888 meaning this organ had to be manufactured prior to the name change. The organ was first used in the mission main room from 1890 to 1915 when the St Nicholas chapel was built at the back (see item 0548. It was transfered to the new Port Melbourne mission in 1937 (link on postcard from State Library Victoria). In 1972, it was transferred to the Holy Trinity Church in Bay Street after the closure of the Mission In the late 1980s during a National Trust campaign to save the building, the organ was sold by the Anglican Men's Society to the Trust's organ committee, who carried out some restoration work and returned it to the former Missions to Seamen chapel. In 1991 the Office of Major Projects had control of the whole 'Bayside' development site. With the Mission to Seamen Building emptied and proposed for demolition, the Office of Major Projects removed the organ and placed it in storage in various locations - finally, in the Museum of Victoria store in Abbotsford. In 1995-6, enquiries by Jim Hillis resulted in the return of the organ to the control of the Port Melbourne HIstorical & Preservation Society. As the Society had no suitable location for the organ, several churches and schools in Port Melbourne were approached to take the organ with no results. The nearby suburbs were suggested next. Finally the Melbourne Maritime Museum (Polly Woodside) was approached and agreed to place it in their Museum on a long term loan. In 1997 it was on display in no 5 shed South Wharf (23/3/1997). In 2006, the Polly Woodside South Wharf site was to be re-developed, and they could no longer retain the organ. Accordingly, on 4 May 2006, the organ was transferred to the Mission To Seafarers building in Flinders Street Extension as an indefinite loan (refer OL 022) The PMHPS deaccessioned it to finally transfered it in 2018 to MTSV.(See also acquisition details re 21st C finalisation of acquisition) This organ is a tangible reminder of the longevity of the Mission to Seafarers, a link with the original Bethel Union which was instrumental in 1856 calling a public meeting and inviting subscriptions by various non-conformist churches to found a mission to Seamen. Rev Kerr-Johnson delivered the first service in 1857 aboard the Emily. The Mission to Seafarers has been in operation ever since and continues to operate to the same purpose today.Large reed organ that looks like a pipe organ with fifteen elaborately painted pipes bearing a floral motif. The body of the organ is elaborately decorated in carved wood. It has 17 knobs above the keyboard both which can be concealed when the keyboard cover is lowered. This is the Dalgety bridge across the Snowy River. It is a steel construction.The first bridge over the river was constructed in 1888. There was a punt across the river before the bridge was built . Dalgety is a small service centre, located on the Snowy River approximately 235 km from Orbost. It was an early consideration for the site of Australia,s capital city. The Dalgety Bridge over the Snowy River has been an important item of infrastructure in the history of New South Wales for over 110 years. It was designed by noted bridge engineer J. A. McDonald,and was a technically sophisticated bridge structure for its time. In 2018 GHS members visited Turner's Bakery in Mernda for lunch and continued on to visit historic sites remaining in the Mernda area. This photograph shows the Mernda Mechanics Institute, established 1888. It was sited to the rear of the Bridge Inn Hotel on land donated by the hotel's owner. Colour transparency (slide) created in June 1976 during a tour by the Junior National Trust, which was led by members of Kew Historical Society. The collection of 21 slides reveals that the tour covered all parts of Kew, but focused understandably on heritage buildings and sites.Image of an historic place in Kew that can be dated to an exact time and place. The Warrnambool Family History Group, founded in 1980, conducts walks in the Warrnambool Cemetery each year. In 2014 the graves visited were those of people who were early directors and share holders of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Company Limited. This company was established in 1888 and today is the oldest operating dairy factory in Australia. Dr. Frank Longden was appointed as a newly-graduated doctor to Buninyong in 1888, and served the people of Buninyong and district until his death in 1938. This house was built in 1892 as a wedding present from his bride’s father to his daughter on the occasion of her marriage to Dr. Longden. Tom Marks (1857-1939) was a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of the Blind and president in 1900 and 1935-1937. For centenary celebrations of the Association, portraits were painted of past presidents and photographs gathered in preparation of this. This image was collected, however the donor is unidentified. Originally known as the Melbourne Cash Stores the general merchandise business of Younger and Co. was a dominant one in Liebig Street, Warrnambool from 1888 with the arrival in town of John Younger through to the store closure in 1983. John Younger was the director of the Warrnambool Woollen Mills in1903, the Mayor of Warrnambool in 1910 serving two terms and an elder of the Presbyterian Church. William and Ann Swinton came to Warrnambool in 1854. William was a carpenter and established a general store in Warrnambool in 1865. By 1888 the firm was known as William Swinton & Sons. After William died in 1901 the business was known as Swintons Pty. Ltd. After 1934 there were two branches of the business, George Swinton & Son and Swintons Pty. Ltd. Mountain Grange was the property owned by Thomas Hand. It stood where the Kalorama Oval now is. The land around Mountain Grange was used for community gatherings for cricket and picnics etc.The adults and children in this photograph are not named but would have been local residents. In 1888 Joseph Bosisto, M.P. was presented with this collection of seeds by the English firm, Sutton's. He, in turn, presented the collection to the R.H.S.V. for permanent display.
