This photograph was taken at the Golden Jubilee of Orbost High School in 1962. Bert May is addressing crowds. Bert May served as the Member for Gippsland in the Legislative Council from 1957 until 1973. With earlier levels of schooling available at the Orbost State School or nearby schools of Newmerella and Jarrahmond School, it was not until April 1912, and after much campaigning from parents and other notable community members, that the Orbost Higher Elementary School was opened. Mr Richard Trembath was appointed the new Head teacher of Orbost Higher Elementary School and was assisted by Miss Olga Hirst. The senior class consisted of 26 pupils, and the junior class, 16 pupils. A limited curriculum was available which included lessons in Latin, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Geography, History, Drawing and advanced English. Crofts Stores (a chain of grocery stores) entered this float in the City of Moorabbin centenary procession held in 1962. Crofts had several stores in the City of MoorabbinCrofts Stores was established by Archibald Crofts with a single grocers store in South Melbourne. It eventually expanded to include 137 branches throughout Victoria, trading as Crofts Stores. Several Crofts stores existed in the City of Moorabbin and the chain pioneered self-service food stores in Australia. In 1962 the City of Moorabbin celebrated its centenary, which was marked with a procession through the streetsBlack and white photograph of a float being driven down a busy street. There are five people aboard the float, three behind a counter, and two at the rear. There are small flags reading Crofts (the business name) all around the float. Signage along the long edge of the float reads 'Crofts Stores congratulates the City of Moorabbin 1962'. The following replica medals belonged to Barbara Frances Black, Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps, Unit: 1 Field Hospital. Vietnam Service: 14 may 1968 - 16 April 1969. Date of death: 3 November 1971, Fitzroy, Victoria. Barbara Black was the only woman casualty of the Vietnam War, dying from illness incurred while on active service. This photo is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. It is an early image of the Summit T-Bar which operated from 1961 until 1991. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. He had remained actively involved in Falls Creek and was generous with his time and knowledge, always an amazing supporter of The Falls Creek Museum and Falls Creek Village.This photo is significant because it was taken in the early years of operation of the Summit T-Bar at Falls Creek, Victoria.A black and white image of a group of skiers at the top of the Summit T-bar. This ceramic ram was produced to promote or advertise "Thibenzole", a product of Merck, Sharp and Dohme (Australia) Pty Ltd. Thibenzole is an anthelmintic or anti worm drench produced by MSD and launched onto the market in early 1962. It was promoted as being useful against most worm varieties and for being tasteless, odourless and easy to use. The original aircraft depicted was assigned to the US 5th Air Force, 49th Fighter Group, 9th fighter Squadron and flown by Lt. Reynold from May 1942 until early August 1942. The aircraft was nicknamed "Stardust". On 8th August 1942 this P40 was assigned to the Royal Australian Air Force as Kittyhawk A29-136 and assigned the code letter "N", retaining the "Stardust" nickname.
