John Owens (1831-1892) was a Welshman who spent 1853-1863 in Australia, predominantly on the Bendigo goldfields.He was a miner who also initially set up a horse drawn puddling machine, although he sold this in 1857. He gave first hand insight into life on the goldfields through letters he wrote home to his parents. He returned to Wales in 1863 and in 1864 he married his uncles widow, Jane Davis. The company began in 1892 as a medical gymnasium in Hobart started by Hans Christian Bjelke-Petersen. Sir Joh Bjelke Petersen was a nephew but had no connection with the company. The success of the gymnasium developed and physical culture was taught in Sydney and Melbourne. the company was based in Castlereagh St, Sydney from 1923-1982. Zone competitions were introduced and State finals held at the Grace Bros Auditorium. The Senior Finals were held at the Sydney Opera House from 1974 when it opened. This service was held on January 28, 1936 at the Mechanics' Institute, Orbost. Born in 1865, George V was the second eldest son of Edward VII and Alexandra 1865. He first visited Australia with his elder brother Prince Albert as midshipmen aboard the HMS Bacchante in 1880. He was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936. The Shire of Orbost was a local government area about 380 kilometres east of Melbourne. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994. Originally, Orbost was part of the Bairnsdale Road District which was created on 30 April 1867. Splitting away as part of the Shire of Tambo in 1882, Orbost was first incorporated as a shire in its own right as the Shire of Croajingolong on 30 May 1892. It received its present name on 17 February 1893. On 3 January 1913 part of its western riding was annexed to Tambo as its Cunninghame Riding. On 2 December 1994, the Shire was abolished, and merged with City and Shire of Bairnsdale, Shire of Tambo, most of the Shire of Omeo and the Boole Boole Peninsula from Shire of Rosedale into the Shire of East Gippsland.This item reflects the significance of monarchy for Australia and the constitutional history of Australia.The item reflects the interest in the royal family to Australians at this time as well as the general feeling of respect and admiration felt by the rural communities towards the British Royal Family..A folding single sheet, white paper program with a dark purple print. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-46: Captain John Powell was born in Finland in 1843. He came to Phillip Island in 1892 and resided at Rhyll with his son-in-law, Captain Johan Jansson. He died in 1927 aged 84 years. His son Alfred is also buried with him. Alfred died in 1938 aged 54 years. 466-47: Lt Colonel A. G. Cameron DSO adn BAR. Lt Colonel Cameron was the commanding officer of the 2nd Australian Infantry Batalion. He was one of only 28 Australians decorated with the DSO and BAR during WWII. He died on 8th June 1960, aged 51 years. Handwritten and typed copy of a report in the Bendigo Advertiser Mon 11/1/1892 of a fire which totally destroyed the engine-house at Lazarus Coy's mine at New Chum on Sunday 10th January at 2 a. m. Last page has a copy of a letter to the Editor of the Advertiser from William Nolan, Captain, G. S. V. F. B. contradicting Superintendent Daymond's statement that said the City Brigade had first water on the fire and the Golden Square was next. William Nolan says they had water on the fire ten minutes before the City Brigade arrived. He was hoping the Superintendent would rectify his mistake. The steamship, SS Australia, was built in Greenock, Scotland in 1892, for the P & O Steam Navigation Company. Australia was considered to be one of the most luxurious vessels afloat and she held the speed record from England to Australia at the time. On 21st June 1904, due to pilot error, the Australia hit the notorious Corsair Rock, part of the Point Nepean Reef, on the eastern side of Port Philip heads, opening a gaping 5 meter hole along her keel. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could be active in civic life. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and at times, national level. Mayoresses were also required to undertake Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Mayoress Staples was born Harriet Jane Whitford in 1892 and died in 1959. Thomas Burch Ford (1818-1892) began producing blotting paper and filter papers for personal and industrial use, after taking over Slade's Original Handmade Blotting Company in 1881. John Letts produced the first commercially available diary in 1812. In 1835 the business was taken over by his son Thomas and grandson Charles John joined the company in 1870. In 1881, after a brief hiatus, Charles restarted the business as Charles Letts and Company, the name it retains today. Trooper John William Lockey (1892-1978) was born in Durham, England. He enlisted 24/11/1914 in Bendigo in the 4th Lighthorse with the service number 946. At the time of enlistment he was a miner. He was wounded at Gallipoli by a bomb wound to the foot on 25/8/1915 and was subsequently invalided to Australia on 17/9/1915. Frank Augustus O'Neill (1885- ) was born in Bendigo. He enlisted into the 4th Lighthorse on 12/12/1914 with the service number 1415. He returned to Australia in March 1916 and was medically discharged due to a double hernia.Attached to card 1 brass 5 pointed star & 1 brass button showing a crest with lion & unicorn. This residence named 'Mourilyan' was built in 1892 beside Harbeck's Store, Lakes Entrance, as a family residence. It was altered and extended in 1927. In 1968 it was relocated to present site in Williams Road. The entrance steps and stonework were constructed by Rev A E Clark. Internal renovations during 1990's. In 1904 an The Worn Out Miners Art Union was formed to raise money for Watson's Sustentation Fund. This state-wide fund raised money to provided support for miners and at this time were supporting 200 miners. The Art Union boasted 100 hundred prizes ranging from 1000 pounds down to 10/6. The Sandhurst No. 1 Fire brigade, the oldest brigade in Bendigo having been formed in 1855, was selling raffle tickets on behalf of the Art Union. Maryborough Post Office is a heritage-listed post office at 69 Clarendon Street, Maryborough, Victoria, Australia. Maryborough Post Office was constructed on the site of the second government camp associated with the Maryborough gold fields, and replaced an earlier stone post office building constructed in 1858. The current building was designed by John Hudson Marsden and built in 1876-77, with the clock tower added in 1879. Royal Doulton as part of the Minton Miniature series produced this heron model in 2001. A limited edition of 1,793 pieces were made, and this heron is number 89. The heron is a scaled down model of the original life-size piece first produced by Paul Comolera, c. 1892, as a walking stick and umbrella stand. Comolera was a French artist and sculptor, renowned for dramatic naturalistic forms, and life-size renditions of birds and animals that won him admiration in public and artistic circles. The Warrnambool Art Gallery (WAG) has a life-sized Heron in its collection. This ledger was used by the Shire of Orbost from 1906 to 1910. The item was donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council. In Australian suburbs and rural towns where the sewer wasn't connected, people usually had an outside toilet. The toilet seat was made of a plank of wood secured at its ends to the walls of the building with a large round hole in the middle. Underneath was the removable sanitary pan and on a regular basis, usually weekly, the full pan was taken away and replaced with an empty one. This was the job of the sanitary carter. the sanitary depot was in Martins Lane, Orbost Development of the Orbost Wastewater Treatment Facility began in the 1960’s with the construction of four treatment lagoons. Shortly after the construction of the lagoons the sewerage system was installed throughout Orbost.This item is a record of accounting for the local government. The collection of sanitary pans was a necessary service before the Orbost township was had its own wastewater treatment facility.A large register of pan fees for the Shire of Orbost. The first president was Mr A W Harston. Mr William Meader was the first honorary secretary and the club champion for several years. Another notable identity was Mr. Harry Culliton, who contributed golf notes to "The Argus" for many years. Harry Culliton (clerk; later bank manager) married Christina Mary Rothwell of Surrey Hills in 1897. They initially live in Canterbury Road before moving to 'Bayview' in Harding Street. They had 3 sons. The eldest Kenneth Rothwell Culliton married Molly Fanny Arthur in 1940. They continued to live in 'Bayview'. Molly was a foundation member of the Surrey Hills Historical Society.The image is significant in documenting the Surrey Hills Golf Club, no longer in existence, but also members of early Surrey Hills families. Charles Walter served in the Army - 16th Reinf's 8th Battalion (5165) enlisting on, 24/01/1916 in Ballarat, VIC before being discharged from duties with the 16th REINF'S 8th BATT as a Army Non-Commissioned Private (PTE) on 28/11/1917. The Weekly Times was first published on September 11, 1869. In September 1875, The Weekly Times absorbed two other Melbourne-based rural publications, the Economist and Town and Country.In 1892 the Daily Telegraph company sold its buildings and mastheads to the Herald group, which has published The Weekly Times continuously since. In 1902 The Herald and Standard Newspaper Company Ltd changed its name to the present Herald and Weekly Times. These booklets were published as souvenir magazines to "celebrate 100 years on the land". They had ten parts published weekly from September 15 - November 17 1999. These magazines are records of 20th century rural history of Victoria. Ten magazines inside a hard plastic covered folder. They are Weekly Times souvenir booklets/magazines titled "Our Land, Our Century 1900-1999: Celebrating 100 Years on the Land". They contain pictures and stories of events related to rural Australia. Each edition covers ten years from 1900 -1989.

The photographs show the Butter Factory at Orbost in 1892 and 1906. The postcard is addressed to Miss N. Cameron C/- Mrs H. Nixon of Picnic Point Bairnsdale. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co. Ltd was registered on June 1st 1893 and was an important source of income to the Orbost district. The first shipment in about 1893 to England went rank and was only good for axle grease on wagons and carts.The milk was brought to the factory by horse and dray.Most people would take the whey home for their pigs,which were abundant on the farms in the Orbost district. Mr John Gilbert is the man second from the left in 1250.1.Postcards form a vital part of social and historical records for researchers. These cards are photographs of the Orbost Butter Factory. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co. Ltd was registered on June 1st 1893 and was an important source of income to the Orbost district. Two photographs / postcards of the Orbost Butter Factory. 1250.1 is a a photograph of several horse-drawn wagons outside a large wooden building.There are several men on top of the wagons, seated and standing. 1250.2 is a postcard with a photograph of the butter factory taken from the north side showing the two storeys with a person standing at a door on each level. There are horse drawn carts behind a wooden fence and several men standing on the front verandah with one man at a top window. This Bible belonged to Thomas Wong Ch(e)ong who was the catechist at the Warrnambool Chinese Church in Ryot Street, Warrnambool. In 1892 Thomas Wong Cheong was appointed by the Foreign Missions Committee of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria as the catechist to the Chinese community in Warrnambool and district. The Chinese Church in Ryot Street was established in the early 1890s and continued until the late 1920s when the numbers of the local Chinese community had declined. Thomas Wong Cheong and his wife worked tirelessly in the Warrnambool district until his death in 1923. No information has been found on James Yee Keet. This is a book of high significance because it belonged to Thomas Wong Cheong who holds an important place in Warrnambool’s history because of his work with the Warrnambool Chinese community over a period of 30 years. This is a leather-covered book with four gold Chinese characters on the spine and the back cover (the front cover for Chinese readers). The leather on the cover extends over the pages and folds inwards to almost enclose the pages. The pages are gilt-edged. The inscription is handwritten in blue ink. The book contains a fold-out map of the Mediterranean Sea area and all the text is in printed Chinese characters. The cover is somewhat scuffed and there is some silverfish damage on the inside cover. ‘Presented to Christian friend Mr Thos. This is a New Testament in Chinese given to Thomas Wong Cheong on the occasion of his baptism in August 1886. Thomas Wong Cheong (also written Thomas Wong Tong) was a Christian Catechist appointed by the Foreign Missions Committee of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Victoria. He worked in Warrnambool, ministering to the local Chinese Christian community for 31 years. He died in 1923. A Chinese Church, under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church, was erected in Ryot Street, Warrnambool in 1892. By the 1930s the Chinese community in the Warrnambool area had dwindled to a very few in number and the Ryot Street building was demolished in 1979. This is a significant book because of its association with the Chinese community in Warrnambool and the catechist Thomas Wong Cheong. The Chinese Church and the work of Thomas Wong Cheong are of importance in Warrnambool’s history from the end of the 19th century to the early years of the 20th century and this book would have been well-used during this time. This is a hard cover book with a black cover and the words, ‘New Testament’ printed in gold lettering on the back page (probably the front page when being read in Chinese). The text is entirely in the Chinese language with the Chinese characters in columns ruled longways. The signature of Thomas Wong Cheong (Tong) is written four times in blue and red ink. There is an inscription on the back page (front of book) and a page with a yellow background and black printing. Some of the pages have been torn (silverfish damage) and the edges of some pages have been stained. Most of the pages have four or five holes on the inside edges, suggesting that the book has been re-bound from a previous binding. Heyfield Butter Factory Company opened in 1891, and became a co-operative in 1892. It was a major employer in the town, and provided an outlet for local dairy farmers. It amalgamated with Traralgon and Yarram Co-operatives in 1960 to form South Eastern Milk products, which in turn amalgamated with Gippsland Consolidated Milk in 1971 to form Gippsland Amalgamated Milk. In 1973 Gippsland Amalgamated Milk became part of Murray Goulburn, who closed the Heyfield Butter Factory in May 1973. One enquiry to a resident, who arrived there in 1948, suggested this may have ceased being used before that date, or was not available locally.This wrapper is of historical significance as an example of the packaging and promotion of the main product from the Heyfield Butter Factory and Electricity Supply Company. This factory was a major employer and economic influence in the Heyfield District from 1891 to 1973, with the buildings still being an important component in the landscape of the town.Three butter wrappers for one pound blocks of Heyfield Creamery pasteurised butter. Pender Bros began in 1892 in Maitland New South Wales who supplied beekeeping supplies to the local beekeepers and later to beekeepers Australia wide. In the early 1970s was the largest factory in the southern hemisphere. In the late 1970s Pender Bros sold the beekeeping business in the late 1970s to the workers of Pender Bros and the name changed to Pender Beekeeping. The business moved to Rutherford New South Wales. The business was sold and changed to Pender Beegoods around 1989. In late 2002 it changed hands again to Pender Beekeeping Supplies and moved to Cardiff, Lake Macquarie New South Wales.Metal cylinder with hinged lid with spout on top. Leslie John Ellison was born in Horsham in 1920. He was the son of Charles Ellifson (1892-1969) and Lilly May Rogers (1897-!966). He became a teacher and in the 1940s he dropped the "f" from his surname. In 1949 he married Aileen Beryl Ervin (6/3/1924-24/5/2004) John was interested in history and specially in Christian church history. He recorded his thoughts and research in writing. John died 25/7/1981 and is buried with his wife at the Kangaroo Flat Cemetery. Elizabeth Wilson met James Henry Courtney at the annual Lord Mayor's Ball on 28 August 1890. In 1892, Capt James Courtney moved to 'Courtland' an architect-designed house at 31 Jenkin Street, Northcote. James married Elizabeth at Nth Fitzroy. Several years later they moved to 108 McKean Street, Nth Fitzrory. Capt and Mrs Courtney were guests at the official opening of the Australian Parliament on 9 May 1901, the reception at the Exhibition Building that evening, and the Royal Review at Flemington the following day. Finally they moved to 'Lumeah', a brick villa at 11 Belmont Avenue, Kew.Black silk floor length skirt with black lining and internal tapes. The skirt is distinguished by a gathered hem giving the impression of ruffles. With the donation, there is also an accompanying group of copied photographs of the Courtney family, including one which shows Elizabeth Courtney, the owner of the skirt.
