Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. Edward John Price was a son of early settler Edward Joseph Price. Edward Joseph was the first settler in the Village Settlement when he took out Lot 1, Section 1. He built a small home of slabs and brought his family up in 1896. From the outset the Price family ran a store from their home.This picture, taken 1914, shows Edward John Price on his pony delivering papers from his parent's newsagency that was opposite 'Mountjoy' guesthouse on Ridge Road. He was taking them to Lily Badenhop's post office in Blythe's Road. Francis Matthew (Frank) Child (1928 – 2020) was the son of Bernard Child (1907 – 1995). Bernard was the son of Ethel May Madden and an unknown father. When Ethel married Ted Child in 1908 Bernard was raised by Ted’s parents Francis and Martha Child. Bernard married Dulcie Paice (1904 – 1990) and they had one son, Frank Child, before they divorced in 1943. According to the National Archives of Australia: 'Land was life for nurseryman Theo Spykers and his ancestors who had tilled the soil for generations; good land to own and to pass on to sons and their sons. At 42 Theo had one and a half acres near Rotterdam for a prosperous nursery, but he could only rent it and his family was growing. So, in 1948, Theo left his wife and six children at their home and set off by himself for Australia. Within a year he had paid a deposit on a broken-down property of 35 acres in the Dandenong ranges. His family joined him and they started to rehabilitate their new property. Mr and Mrs Spykers and twelve of their thirteen children pick chrysanthemums for sale in Melbourne, a city of 1,750,000. The children are; Theo, 20; Gerald, 15; Niko, 8; Frank, 5; Adolf, 22; Corrie, 11; Ria, 18; Terisa, 4; Anthony, 7; Tommy, 2; Elly, 10; Bill, 16.' Mr & Mrs Spykers are each holding one of the smaller children. This farm was on the corner of Birds Rd and Avon Rd, Avonsleigh. On the NAA records, Theodorus Gerardus Spykers arrived in Melbourne on the Muiderkerk on 27th February 1948. From TROVE: Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954), Thursday 1 April 1948, page 8 Legacy Conference In Adelaide Addressing delegates from all States at a convention of Intermediate Legacy Clubs last week, His Excellency the Governor (Sir Willoughby Norrie), who was accompanied by Lady Norrie, said that Adelaide regarded it as a privilege to be chosen as the venue of the first of what might become a series of annual conferences on the general policy of Intermediate Legacy of Australia. His Excellency stressed that the objects of Intermediate Legacy were to foster the spirit of comradeship, self-sacrifice and service, and to establish a high standard of citizenship and a spirit of responsibility in national development. 'Anything to do with Legacy has the strongest support of Lady Norrie and myself,' continued the Governor. 'Membership of Intermediate Legacy is open to the children of deceased servicemen who have passed the age of 16. There is no upper limit, although in 1945 a Senior Intermediate Club was formed in Adelaide for men returned from the services, or who, ineligible for service, had attained the age of 25. This document records the legal status of 'Junior Legacy, Melbourne' in 1952. Melbourne Legacy has had name changes over the years. In September 1952 Junior Legacy Melbourne was incorporated. Under the provisions of the Companies Act 1938, it was registered as a company with limited liability without the need for 'limited' in its' name (see page 1). Another copy of this document was stored in the 'History of Legacy' files as 'H17' (01490) when the original archive project was undertaken by Legatees Frank Doolan and Brian Armstrong.A record of a former entity of Melbourne Legacy. The incorporation was under the companies act 1938. The document covers the year of 1941. Mention is made of the restrictions and difficulties (petrol rationing, scarcity of paper to name some) that occurred with running a wartime economy, and trying to implement the social welfare programme of Legacy. In particular, The Welfare Committee. Despite the difficulties of the time, Legacy not only continued its work but expanded the programme e.g. the establishment of a Legacy Dental Clinic in Collins St, Melbourne. The document also notes with some sadness the death of some Junior Legatees due to war service, and the realisation that the work of Legacy will need to be expanded due to World War 2. Legacy Probation Officers paid tribute to the never failing support of the Police department. To quote, "In all cases the Police were just as anxious as we to save the boys from the Reformatory of Gaol." There are many documents styled as 'The work of 19XX' so it was a way legatees reported the main events of the year. Many were put into the original archive started by Frank Doolan and were labelled with the letter 'H' to signify History.A record that Legatees were recording the major events of the year in a report for future reference. Significant in that the Law Courts valued the work Legacy was doing to reform their Junior Legatees who had appeared before the courts.White quarto paper, black type. A detailed list of duties broken into 4 parts; dealing with the occupants, the maintenance of the interior of the property, the maintenance of the exterior of the property and the catering and ordering of supplies. Also shows the conditions of employment, the salary was £5 a week with board included. The annual leave was 2 weeks a year. It was anticipated that a couple would manage the property so it outlines the days off per week could be taken together if proper supervision was arranged. The first manager was Mr Bert Frank and his wife was appointed Matron. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. It outlines his war service in WWI (with the 1st and 2nd A.I.F), civilian career running a Ford garage for 20 years and his interests. Also the education and experience of his wife, Clare Frank, and mentions their 10 year old son. It provides referees for both of them. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself.
