The note mentions that she was a past resident at Stanhope, possibly in 1949. It was pasted into a scrapbook of photos and newspaper clippings that was probably compiled by the Matron of Stanhope. It shows past residents kept in contact with the home and Legacy. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01836. A photo of Mr William Bernard Wigston who left a substantial amount to Melbourne Legacy in his will in 1968. The note from Legatee Aaron Beattie says William Wigston was born in London in 1880 and died in Melbourne in 1968. He was educated at Lancing College in Southern England (near Brighton). His father was a London solicitor. The photo was taken about 35 years before being given to Legacy which may have been approx 1933. The article from The Age says that Mr William Wigston was a financier living in Toorak and had died aged 88. He left in his will, approximately $150,000 to Junior Legacy and the same to the RSPCA. The executive officer of Legacy, Mr Ivan Layton, believed it was the highest donation that they had ever received at that time. The photo was produced by Talma, which was a photography business in Melbourne. The article was part of collection of items about bequests made to Legacy put together by a former archive committee. A newspaper article promoting Legacy Week in The Sun on 10 September 1960. The story about the donation of a special bottle of King's Ale to Legacy that was to be auctioned to raise money for Legacy Week in 1960. In 1902 a special brew of ale was made by King Edward VII. In 1960 a bottle of the ale turned up in Melbourne and was donated to Legacy by Mr A W Taylor of 'Old Tin Shed' a motor accessories firm. The photo shows Mr A W Taylor and Legatee George Cowan. A similar photo was taken by The Age. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings. Photograph of Lynne Scott and her five children to promote Legacy week. The newspaper cutting says that her husband Colin Scott died in 1985, he had served in the Vietnam War as a reconnaissance pilot. One of his children, Chris, has become a Brisbane Bears footballer. The family were interviewed and said how Legacy had been very good to their family. Lynne Scott says "The most important thing for us was knowing there was someone we could call on if we needed and that the children were being looked after". The Scott family were featured on the 1994 poster for Legacy Week. 1994 was the year of the family and it was fitting that a family was chosen to promote Legacy. Ron Barassi was a Legacy boy after his father died at Tobruk in 1941. He helped promote Legacy in many ways and at many events over many years. The photo shows Ron Barassi participating in a tug of war event in Melbourne City Square and another participant is in army uniform. It was featured on the cover of The Answer September 1992, saying it was Legacy Week. The President's Fund was created in 1932 by a donation from Legatee Walter W Berry from his late father's estate "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. This sheet of accounts was compiled in 1986 to show the income and expenditure over the previous 15 years. Donations continued to come from the Berry Fund and also from the Over 70s Legatees. The over 70s was a group of legatees that met up socially and after their annual meeting they forwarded a cheque to Legacy. Also appears to be donations from legatee Dono Joynt. The expenditure is marked as ANON to protect the identity of the recipients and amounted to $7,600 over the 15 years. The note mentions some of the amounts are estimates. A copy of the minutes of a committee meeting that discussed The Presidents Fund and the Over 70 meetings. It mentions that the annual gatherings for member over 70 years of age, originally meant it was primarily for those who fought in World War 1. Now WWII members were nearing that age and criteria might need to be reassessed. The Over 70 meeting was a major contributor of funds for the Presidents Fund. Perhaps by 1986 the annual amount donated by the Berry Trust had ended (for many years $1000 a year was received from the fund set up by Legatee Walter Berry). Various documents recording the discussions around helping an ex-Legatee who needed financial assistance. Louis Vavjinski was a member of Legacy in the early years (1920s and 1930s) and gave remarkable service especially to boys' classes where he was an excellent instructor. He had married a French lady at the end of World War 1 and they returned to France after the second world war. By the 1960s he was in financial difficulties and the correspondence points out that he was not eligible for an Australian pension due to living in France. A group of Legatees worked together to raise funds (over £1000) to send Louis, in one letter they approached Legacy President Ivan Layton for funds from the Presidents fund. This shows that legatees form strong bonds with each other and have a desire to help anyone in need. Legacy was founded in 1923 so this is a very early photo. The label on the back says: "Extract from 'Legacy' by Claude Blatchford. At Christmas 1926, a camp for boys was held at Balnarring on the property of Legatee S G Savige. It is impossible to over-estimate the advantages and benefits these camps afford. An annual camp, under discipline must be regarded as conferring the very greatest benefits. The first camp in 1926 was for seven day and thirty two boys went under canvas. Seven tents were used, and tent commanders were appointed. The lads were rostered for duties and their time was otherwise taken up in swimming, fishing, shooting and cricket. Standing orders and daily routine orders were issued, and it is to the credit of the boys that the discipline was excellent." (Blatchford 1932). As a teenager in the 1950s Alison Wisdom was a resident for seven years at both Stanhope and Holmbush Legacy hostels in Burke Road, Kew. She has compiled a website and written a book about her extended family in which her own experiences are described. The newsletter from July 1951. It featured former Sir Thomas Blamey on the cover. The president's introduction talked of the death of Sir Thomas Blamey and his career. There was a piece on the Legacy residence named after Blamey with photos of the residence in Balcombe Road, Black Rock. Pages showed news from the different Boys and Girls Classes and suggested physical exercises. Plus a piece on the Mothers' Club and the Intermediate Club activities. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War". Many articles on the work of Legacy, including features on boys classes, girls classes, camps, the residences and where their past residents ended up. There are some suggestion for careers and some general interest articles. The newsletter from August 1955. It featured photos of the Legacy staff, including Miss Dorrie Vines the Matron of Stanhope. It summarises her life before joining Stanhope on 11 November 1946. She had served with distinction overseas during World War 2 as a Major with the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps. At the beginning of 1940 she went to the Middle East and served as Senior Sister of No.1 Casualty Clearing Station and shortly afterwards was appointed Sister-in-charge of the No.3 Casualty Clearing Station. She returned to Australian in 1943 and was appointed Matron of a hospital in Alice Springs and in 1944 she again left Australia for New Guinea as Matron of the 2/11 Australian General Hospital. For her war service she was awarded the medal of an Associate of the Royal Red Cross in 1943 and was also mentioned in despatches. There was an article about the Anzac Eve ceremony for students. Also holidays essays and photos from holiday camps at Ararat. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War". Many articles on the work of Legacy, including features on boys classes, girls classes, camps, the residences and where their past residents ended up. There are some suggestion for careers and some general interest articles.
