The Kew railway was opened in 1887, and diverged from the main (Box Hill–Lilydale) line about half-way between Hawthorn and Glenferrie. From the point of divergence the line was slightly less than one mile long, and it had only one intermediate station — Barker. There were four road over-bridges and two level crossings, including one over the busy Barkers Road. The line supported a passenger and goods service, and was electrified in December 1922, at the same time as the main line to Box Hill. There were a number of peak hour services which ran from Flinders Street station (Melbourne) to Kew, but in 1938 all but one of these were diverted to the Ashburton line, where traffic was growing. This had an adverse effect on Kew traffic, as passengers from Kew needed to cross over a footbridge at Hawthorn to change trains, and the main line trains were usually already crowded by the time they reached Hawthorn. At about the same time the off-peak trains were replaced by road buses. In 1952 all passenger trains were withdrawn, but the road bus service continued for many years. Goods trains were finally withdrawn in 1957, and the railway was dismantled in 1958-59. Book - MY HUSBAND'S LIFE - AS TOLD BY MARY HAZELDENE, 1981
Sydney Herbert Hazeldene (1893-1966) was born in Bath, England and arrived in Australia in 1906. HE walked for 10 days from Melbourne to Bamawm, where he found work on a dairy farm. After 3 years he walked to Eaglehawk where he found work as a wheeler in a mine. He served in WW1 at Gallipoli, where he was wounded. After his return to Bendigo he married Mary Eales and they began a successful bus service. Unfortunately their two buses were destroyed by fire so they purchased a truck and began a removalist/carrier business serving locally and interstate. When the work became too heavy for Sydney he bought land and set up a dairy farm. They also moved into breeding chickens and soon this business overtook the dairying with the last cows sold in 1942. This was the beginning of Hazeldene's Poultry.Softcover book white front with black printed title. Memoir of 58 pages recounting author's husband's (Sydney Herbert Hazeldene) life. Photograph - Last day of original Essendon Airport tram terminus, Ron Scholten, 7-10-1976
The original line to the Essendon Aerodrome was constructed in 1943 to serve the airport and aircraft construction. It was funded by the Commonwealth Government. By 1976, patronage to the airport terminus in Vaughan St had dropped, the crossing of the highway to the Tullamarine Airport opened in 1970, was dangerous, and the highway needed to be widened. The new terminus was a short distance to the north between Mathews Ave and the Highway. This series of photographs show the last day of operations to the original terminus and the changeover, which was done in about 7 hours. No buses were required. It was done by workers of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board. The line was later extended to Airport West. .1 - W5 789, (Essendon Airport Route 59) about to turn from Mathews Ave into Vaughan St. Has new track and footbridge in the foreground. .2 - W5 791 on the siding or spur at the airport terminus, the last tram to use this facility. .3 - W2 571, at the Airport terminus alongside Vaughan St on the last morning of the use of this terminus. The Bundy clock can be seen behind the pole on the lefthand side and the Brick passenger shelter. Shows buffer stops, and Forestair hanger behind. .4 - W2 595 turning from Vaughan St into Mathews Ave. Has the tram stop No. 55 in the view. .5 - W5 839 turning from Vaughan St into Mathews Ave. Shows the flashing yellow light that gave some protection to the trams. .6 - W2 247 about to turn into Vaughan St. Driver about to reboard the tram. Note the new copper trolley wire is up for the new track but has been pulled to the west side using rope. .7 - W5 805, turning from Mathews Ave into Vaughan St, to the old Essendon Airport terminus. Has a new track in the foreground, and the overhead for the curves is still in position. .8 - W6 991 turning from Vaughan St into Matthews Ave, at 855am, the last tram from the old terminus. The track gang has commenced work to remove the outbound curve. Would appear four passengers waiting at the tram stop, two with lunch bags. Note the cattle grid in the foreground between the rails. The original line to the Essendon Aerodrome was constructed in 1943 to serve the airport and aircraft construction. It was funded by the Commonwealth Government. By 1976, patronage to the airport terminus in Vaughan St had dropped, the crossing of the highway to the Tullamarine Airport opened in 1970, was dangerous, and the highway needed to be widened. The new terminus was a short distance to the north between Mathews Ave and the Highway. This series of photographs show the operation of a tram service during the changeover. Trams ran from the Niddrie crossover near Keilor Road to a temporary terminus just short of the worksite, with cars running "bang" road or the wrong way for one trip along either line. This would have been controlled by an Inspector at the Niddrie end. The work was done over a 7-hour period, including changing the overhead over. Work would have been completed after the changeover period. .1 - W5 800 at “temporary” Essendon Airport terminus, Cnr Mathews Ave, Vaughan St. after running “bang” road or the wrong way to this point from the Niddrie or Keilor Road crossover. Curves have been removed.. Has an Inspector chatting to a man with a hat standing alongside the tram. The shelter has a City of Keilor logo on it. .2 - W5 684, taken from the overbridge at the TAA stop - during the changeover of the tracks. Tram running “bang” road from Niddrie to the temporary terminus. .3 - SW5 787, temporary terminus in Mathews Ave, about to return to Niddrie as an “up” car on the “down” line. .4 - MMTB Track gang commissioning and placing rails at the new terminus with scrubber 10 waiting. Overhead in position with overhead for the curves partly removed. Mobile Crane on the left-hand side moving a formwork piece into position .5 - 10W cleaning new track at the new terminus. .6 - Rail Scrubber 10W at work cleaning head of rails where new concrete section. Map of the MMTB Tramway routes 1925 with a list of first and last cars, along with photographs of Wattle Park, Luna Park, and Studley Park. Provides information for the Prahran and Malvern lines, Hawthorn, Footscray, Essendon, Coburg, Kew, St Kilda, cable tram routes, and buses. Also provides information for passengers. The cover photo is of the front of W 296, with the destination of Esplanade. The map is dated by the opening of the line to West Brunswick as far as Albion St, the City Road to St Kilda line via Sturt St lines, and the electric line in Flemington Road which were all opened during mid to late 1925. Functional object - MMTB Cincinnati "bundy" clock keys, Cincinnati Time Recorder Co. of Ohio, 1930s
Item used to operate and record the time in the Cincinnati Time Recording clock. This type of clock was used by the MMTB in the 1930s. The key would be issued by the depot staff to crews for use in the clock to record times so that they could be matched up against the timetable to see whether tram or bus services were running on time. Understood that this style of key was last used on the Port Melbourne bus route. The Museum has one of these clocks at its depot which was obtained from The Met in? The second photo shows the key in position before turning the handle around it. By the 1960's (or earlier) they were only used on the M&MTB bus routes. All the tram routes had M&MTB copies with a very different style of key. Only used on two man bus routes and the conductor held the key due to the half-cab bus design. On the tram routes the driver was responsible for the key and recording the time. The key number represented the crew's shift number. For a while towards the end of their use on the trams they were the Run number. This change led to many lost keys! Notes that cable trams will soon "roar" in Collins St. .2 - ditto, reporting on the closure of the Collins St cable line and that little interest was taken - but a had a quiet run. Newspaper Clipping - from The Argus 28 October 1940, titled "Last of Cable Trams / Quiet passing after secret send-off", about the closure of the Bourke St cable tram routes the previous Saturday nights when the trams were withdrawn prior to the schedule time and replaced by buses. Gives details of the last tram, crews etc. Notes the driver of the last Nicholson St tram as J. Peden, conductor A. C. Craven, Mr. M. McSweeney as the bus depot dispatcher, Mr. E. Lang as the first driver and conductor, Mr. J. Lee. Also quotes Mr Bell that the tram tracks would be kept in running order if needed, but new cables would be needed. A check with Trove shows the Argus as the source of the newspaper. On the rear of the cutting (3rd last item) is a note that Mr. J. K. The last page has a an extract from page 97 of the June 1983 issue of ET giving a bus fleeing location of the MMTB and notes on Private Bus companies and services. Has been photocopied onto A4 sheets - and published as a supplement to E.T 6/83. Has a stamp of the Road Construction Authority of 25 august 1983 Library on the front sheet. 2nd copy added from donation of Norm Cross. 1519.1 - 12 A4 sheets, were stapled in top left hand corner, titled "Workshops and Running sheds Branch - Allocation of Tramcars 4-4-1983". Compiled by an unknown person as a record book of cable tram operational tickets or fare history for each location with general notes and some notes on electric trams. Pages 1 to 23 and pages 123 and 124 - General history of cable and electric trams with notes on tickets, trams, buses, events, and operational management. Compiled through to 26/10/1930, with some loose notes about the final closure of the cable tram system. For each cable tram car house (depot), Power House or Winding house, or route, notes on tickets, dates, rope speed, fares, replacement electric services or buses. Map provided information about Melbourne's tramway network in 1952. At base of map - timetable of all night trams and bus services. On rear index to routes, 1st and last services, time of Sunday am services, Latrobe St. services and photo of Wattle Park. The conversion of Bourke St to electric trams marked up. Copy 1 - has been marked for hypothetical extensions in blue pencil mainly in the northern and western suburbs. In particular note the Ballarat Road and South Road markings. Copy 2 - has been marked up for newer route numbers, following the opening of the Bourke St services and additional route numbers on the Essendon Depot lines. Ephemera - Point Ormond Timetable, Last Tram record, 22-10-1960
The MMTB Timetable details the trips from Elsternwick or Point Ormond for each day of the week. The sheet records the time of the last tram, 1036pm, driver G Loft No. 2480, and the tram as X2 677 on 22-10-1960. The donor advised that the MMTB following the practice adopted for the Bourke St changeover in 1940, the MMTB chose to pull the tram service before the last advertised trip for the day. Those present to ride the last started early and rode up and down for quite a few runs, then, on one arrival at Elsternwick Station, the Inspector (known as grasshoppers or Braids) on board instructed the driver to keep going and we rode through to GH Depot without paying another fare. They noted a half-cab bus, destination 'Clifton Hill', lurking ready to take up the running. The donor reported (and as you will see from the endorsements on the timetable) “I circled the time of the last run and got the signature and badge number of the driver. The rubber-stamp impressions were also applied to souvenir tickets (3d).” Yields information about the Point Ormond Service prior to its closure and records details of the last tram service.Foolscap Gestetner duplicated sheet, dated 29/1/1960Marked to show the last tram on 22-10-1960, time, tramcar and driver's name and number.tramways, timetables, tram 677, point ormond, closure, last tram -

Set of two notebook or lined journals, with light brown pig skin binding strips and in each of the corners binding, faint ruled Collins 4393 books with red labels on the outside binding, sewn sections, printed glued inside covers. Each book has been ruled in red ink, headed year and month, days, page totals with data entered for each depot of the distance or mileage or kilometres for each date, including separate tram and bus entries. .1 - Blue cloth covered with Letraset, black plastic strip on outside "Tram / Bus Kilometres" for the period 1-7-1965 to 30-6-1975. Notes change over to Kms from miles on 1/7/1974. Has head office contact details on the first page. .2 - Red cloth cover with Letraset black plastic strip on outside "Kilometres" drawn up for the period - 1-7-1975 to 13-11-1985, though drawn up to Jan. 1985.
