Book, Landers, James, The Weekly War: Newsmagazines and Vietnam
This is a superb piece of work that contributes to the study of one of the most complicated and controversial aspects of American involvement in Vietnam. It looks in detail at an area of news coverage that has not received sufficient attention. What launders has done here is also important to a better understanding of how information and perceptions of American military and foreign policy are developed. He clearly establishes that the role of the news media for a far more complicated issue than popular opinion and general assumptions credit. This is a superb piece of work that contributes to the study of one of the most complicated and controversial aspects of American involvement in Vietnam. Book, Schulzinger, Robert D, A Time for War: the United States and Vietnam, 1941-1975, 1997
Simply put, this book is a masterpiece which explicates as no other work has done the crucial historical event of our generation. Schulzinger has extended his breadth to cover all aspects of the Vietnam war. The military/strategic angle, the experience of soldiers on the ground, the home front and the domestic political fallout. Neither does he slight the North and South Vietnamese sides. He has provided in one volume the complete picture of the war.Simply put, this book is a masterpiece which explicates as no other work has done the crucial historical event of our generation. Book, George, Alexander,Hall, David, The Limits of Coercive Diplomacy
Coercive diplomacy is a beguiling, strategy, a subtle mixture of military pressures and diplomatic concessions. It is often erroneously thought to be a low risk strategy which military strong powers can employ to impose their will upon weaker opponents. Actually, however, this strategy can succeed only under special conditions, such as were present in 1962 when President Kennedy induced Khrushchev to remove Soviet missiles from Cuba. When special conditions of urgency, motivation and timing are not present, as in 1965 when President Johnson initiated bombing of North Vietnam, an effort to employ coercive diplomacy may easily lead to ruinous involvement.Coercive diplomacy is a beguiling, strategy, a subtle mixture of military pressures and diplomatic concessions. Book, Arnold, James R, The First Domino: Eisenhower, the Military, and America's Intervention in Vietnam, 1991
The question of how the United States became enmeshed in the Vietnam War has troubled three generations of Americans. Now, in this incisive and very well documented history of American intervention in Vietnam from the end of World War 2 to the first months of John F. Kennedy's presidency, historian James R. Arnold present the dramatic unfolding of the events by which Washington led us into Vietnam. At no point along this way did any policymaker consider the ultimate result of this course as seriously heed those who counseled caution. The question of how the United States became enmeshed in the Vietnam War has troubled three generations of Americans. Photograph, Photo Collage of Australian Involvement
Framed photo collage of Australian involvement in Vietnam. In the centre of the collage there is a bronze plaque wich reads: VIETNAM The Vietnam War was a military conflict that occurred in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia from 1959 to 30 April 1975. The was was fought between the communist North vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the united States and other member nations of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) The United States entered the war to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam as part of their wider strategy of containment. Military advisors arrived beginning n 1950. U.S. involvemeny escalated in the early 1960s and combat units were deployed beginning in 1965. Invollvement peaked in 1968 at the time of the Tet Offensive. Despite a peace treaty signed by all parties in january 1973, fighting continued. In response to the anti-war movement, the U.S. Congress passed the Case-Church Amendment in June 1973 prohibiting furtherdirect U.S. military intervention without Congressional authorization yet the U.S.was still heavily invested in the war until 1975, when North Vietnam captured Saigon. North and South Vietnam were reunified the following year. The war exacted a huge human cost in terms of facilities, including 3 to 4 million Vietnamese from both sides, 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159 U.S. soldiers. AUSTRALIAN INVOLVEMENT: For a decade from 1962 to 1972, Australian forces were actively involved in the bitter war that tore Vietnam apart. they served with distinction, and in battles such as the decisive Battle of Long Tan they proved that they were more than a match for the Viet Cong.photo collage, australian involvement, southeast asia treaty organization (seato), tet offensive, u.s. congress, battle of long tan, saigon -
