The people in the photograph were enjoying a day out at a Sunbury race meeting some time in the early 1900s. Races at Sunbury began in 1886 with the establishment of the Sunbury Racecourse that was located along Racecourse Road on a section of the Rupertswood Estate on land consisting of six furlongs and two straights. The site included a patron’s stand, saddling paddock, bookmakers’ enclosure, two bars, a committee room, judges box, stables, toilets, six entrance gates and ticket boxes. Special trains from Melbourne brought patrons and horses to the Sunbury race meetings. A report in the Melbourne Argus newspaper in 1922, stated that city taxi drivers came out to Sunbury to drive patrons to the racecourse, which was located about 3 kms from the Sunbury station. Some time however, between 1886 and 1901, there was a period when the racing club had been inactive. A meeting was called in 1901 to restore the club’s activities. With a substantial loan from Mr. Clarke the committee was able to organise the installation of a turnstile, perimeter fencing and irrigation of the course by a windmill that pumped water from a recently constructed dam that was on the estate. The club continued to function until 1942, during World War 2, and did not resume activities after the end of the war. The land was eventually sold for housing development. The Sunbury Race meetings were popular with the racing fraternity not only in the district but further afield and were deemed sufficiently important to run special trains from Melbourne to Sunbury on Race days.A non-digital sepia photograph with a strong cardboard backing of a crowd of people dressed smartly for a day out at the races. These scales were used by Georgie Ah Ling, who operated a market garden on the edge of the township of Donald for over 70 years. The scales were located in a shed next to his hut located along the Jeffcott Road opposite the Donald Racecourse. He used these scales to weigh produce before delivering it around the town by horse and cart. Black spray painted weighing scales body, 5 weights of different sizes and repainted silver plate. Four wheeled single horse-drawn vehicle containing a wooden stretcher, shaded by a black canvas hood. Driver's seat of black leather. Vehicle used as a jockey's ambulance at Caulfield Racecourse during the 1890s.It had space for one stretcher. Horse drawn ambulances, despite having springs, could be very rough to travel in. They were gradually replaced by motor ambulances at Australian race tracks. This ambulance is currently on public display at the Ambulance Victoria Museum in Bayswater. -

Greyhound Racing commenced in Bendigo in the 1920′s when field coursing (Plumpton) was conducted in the centre of the Bendigo racecourse at Epsom. The coursing continued until 1954 when the blue ribbon classic “The Victorian Waterloo Cup” was run at Bendigo over a three day carnival. These plaques were originally used for display purposes at the Warrnambool Racecourse. They commemorate Repellere, the winner of the Wangoom Handicap in 1928 and its owner, Mr T. Laidlaw. The Wangoom Handicap of six furlongs, first run in Warrnambool in 1886, is the most important sprint horse race in the Western District and is run at the annual Warrnambool May Racing Carnival which features the famous Grand Annual Steeplechase. These plaques are of interest as mementoes of the winner of the Wangoom Handicap at the Warrnambool Races in 1928. This race is one of the important events in the annual Warrnambool May Racing Carnival..1 This is a rectangular-shaped metal plaque. It has a yellow painted surface with a sketch of a jockey's silks and cap in red and beige. The paint is peeled and the plaque is rusty and slightly buckled. The 17th Light Horse was a militia unit between the wars. Members were drawn from Kyneton, Castlemaine and Bendigo areas. In 1936 the regiment, including 100 horses, camped at the Bendigo Racecourse so it is possible this photo was actually 1936.From Dec 1941 this regiment became the 17th Light Horse (Machine Gun) Regiment and was disbanded in April 1943. These plaques commemorate the winner of the Grand Annual Steeplechase in Warrnambool in 1931. The Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase was first held in June 1872. Today it is part of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival and is run over 5,500 metres with 32 fences. The correspondent of The Argus recorded that: "The Parliament of the Commonwealth was opened yesterday by the Duke, of Cornwall and York, under a Commission signed by Queen Victoria and subsequently endorsed by King Edward VII. The ceremony was marked by the splendour and solemn impressiveness which befitted its historic importance. ... To-day the Heir to the Throne will review some 15,000 Australian troops at Flemington. ... It is a function which, on a lesser scale, might have been arranged at any time for many years past; but it could never previously have conveyed the meaning it does now. Soldiering was popularly regarded as a pastime here until South Africa tried the mettle of our men. It is serious business from henceforth. Those who followed the nascent aspirations of the volunteer soldiery in Australia must be impressed at the rapidity of their fulfillment. ... The document design has artistic and aesthetic merit. While it is not rare, it is representative of the kinds of formal designs used for the Australian Commonwealth celebrations at the time of Federation, and is in excellent condition. Such items as this invitation have local, state and national historic significance as mementoes of a key moment in Australia's history. Locally, the invitation is part of a group of Federation-related items owned and displayed at 'Fairyland' by Mrs Grace Tabulo, and a rare survivor of that collection.An invitation, mounted on card to the Royal Review held at Flemington racecourse on Friday 10 May 1901, as part of the Government of Victoria's Australian Commonwealth Celebrations. The border is vividly decorated with flags, shields and a large coat of arms. The photographic images depict various scenes of Flemington in Melbourne, in addition to two separate portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York. Illustrations of military servicemen on foot and horseback flank the central block of text. The invitation was part of the 'Fairyland Collection assembled by Jim and Grace Tabulo. Henry Ison (1832-1915) was a butcher and cattle agent who lived mainly in the Dunnolly - Tarnagulla area. He married Elizabeth Carter in 1853 and they had 7 children of which 3 reached adulthood. These included their son Thomas (1863-1947). Henry was one of the founding members of the Loyal Prince Alfred Lodge of Oddfellows, a member of the Dunolly Borough Council for 9 years and one of the first trustees of the Dunnolly Racecourse.8524 Three receipts for purchases in early 1900. 8524a Mr. H Ison bought 6 bullocks on 4/10/1904 from Howe & McCulloch. 8524b Mr. T Ison bought 4 pigs, 2 & 13 lambs from Alf. These badges were issued to members of the Warrnambool Racing Club in the 1950s. Horse race meetings have been held in Warrnambool since the early days of European settlement, with the Warrnambool Racing Club formed in 1854. Races have been held on the site of the present day racecourse since the late 1850s. Today the chief event on the Warrnambool racing calendar is the annual three-day May Racing Carnival, featuring the well-known Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase. These badges are retained as examples of the badges of members of the Warrnambool Racing Club in the 1950s. They will be useful for display. .1A metal badge (roughly in the shape of a double triangle) with an image in blue, white, green and gold of a horse and jockey clearing a hurdle. The badge has gold lettering, a metal clip at the back and a metal ring at the top for attachment to a cord. .2 .3. The photograph was taken at an Ithacan picnic held at Mentone Racecourse in 1935. Members of the IPS Committee are pictured with their families together with two official guests, Father Theophylaktos Papathanasopoulos from the Melbourne Orthodox Parish, and Father Timotheos Evangelimides, the Archbishop of the Greek Church in Australia, both pictured standing in the centre of the group. Vicki Raftopoulos(Black) is seated 3rd from the left and Arthur Raftopoulos is standing 3rd from right and Stathi Trohoulas is standing far right. Melbourne's first Greek Orthodox Church 'Evangelismos' in Victoria Parade East Melbourne was consecrated in 1901. Ithacans, as members of the Greek Orthodox Community, were directly involved in its establishment. A.J.Lucas the founding president of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society was one of a number of prominent Greeks who advanced funds to help with the purchase of the East Melbourne site upon which the church was built. The building of the church was financed through the contributions of funds from the local Greek community.A black and white photograph mounted on grey board of a picnic group sitting and standing around a table set out with food and drinks under trees. These plaques were once on display at the Warrnambool racecourse with the smaller one originally affixed to a seat. These plaques commemorate the winner of the Grand Annual Steeplechase in Warrnambool in 1931. The Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase was first held in June 1872. Today it is part of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival and is run over 5,500 metres with 32 fences. In 1931 Welcome Stranger's jockey was D. Wraight. The name "Welcome Stranger" is an echo of the name of the famous gold nugget found in Victoria in the 1850's. These plaques are of interest as mementoes of the Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase one of Australia's most significant hurdle races..1 Silver coloured metal plaque in a rectangular shape with four holes in each corner for attachment to a surface.
