The site has been worked intermittently until fairly recent times (Christmas Hills Past and Present (Yarra Glen & District Historical Society, 2004) ) Advertiser (Hurstbridge, Vic. : 1922 - 1939), Friday 14 November 1930, page 1 ________________________________________ QIJEENSTOWN Death of Mr. John Nink One of the oldest and highly-respected settlers in the person of Mr. John Nink, aged 61 years, passed to his rest on November 10 at his residence, Peach Grove, Queenstown North; after suffering from what is known as miners' complaint. The late Mr. Nink has lived in the district practically all his life and died at the home formerly occupied by his father; Some years ago he conducted a peach orchard, which was one of the sights of Queenstown. He was recently engaged in mining at One Tree Hill with Mr. Otto Muller. He took an active part in public affairs, and was a trustee of the mechanics' institute, recreation ground and cemetery trust. He had a happy disposition, was very hospitable and always merry, which made for him friends all over the district. He leaves a wife, and was the father of Alice (Mrs. Christian), Charles, Robert, William and Minnie (deceased); and the brother of Joseph: (deceased), Henry, Johanna (Mrs. Tonge), Frederick, Mary (Mrs. Antonie) and Robert. His relatives have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sad bereavement. The remains of deceased yere interred in Smith's Gully cemetery on Wednesday, and his popularity was shown by the large cortege, amongst the mourners being ex-Cr. Zerbe !(Doncaster), Messrs. Carlyle. Exton, Harris (Kinglake), Birch (Christmas Hills), P. J. McMahon (shire secretary), Crs. Hewitt and Ryan (North Riding), and Cr. D. Murphy (Whittlesea shire). The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Father Lande (Diamond Creek), and the funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. View from Shire of Eltham War Memorial tower at Garden Hill, Kangaroo Ground, probably taken shortly after the memorial's re-dedication held 8 Nov. 1951. On November 11th 1926 the Shire of Eltham War Memorial Tower at Kangaroo Ground was opened. It is regarded as one of Melbourne’s most outstanding lookout towers. It commands a magnificent 360 degree panorama from Kinglake across the Diamond Valley to Macedon and the You Yangs. It is built on a peak which was once a volcano, 237 metres above sea level. After World War one a memorial cairn was erected on the site, and in 1925 a committee of public-minded citizens began to plan for a tower. Many generous donations of material and money were forthcoming so that in 1926 the Governor General Lord Stonehaven was able to unveil the plaque before a crowd of 500 people There was some concern in the 1960s when the Forests Commission wanted to build a firespotters cabin on the top. At first R.S.L. branches opposed the idea, but it was realised that this use could combine with its use as a tourist attraction, and would ensure its maintenance for the future. Today the Kangaroo Ground tower provides one of the best views around Melbourne and is a fitting memorial to those who died in two world wars. From: Historic items for Diamond Valley Community Radio September 1990 (EDHS collection) On November 8th, 1951, the memorial was re-dedicated by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brookes with the addition of the names of men from the Shire of Eltham who fell in the Second World War. The Lyon Bros Eltham Motor Garage opened in 1923 at 283-287 Main Road Eltham, opposite Arthur Street. Messrs Lyon Bros., Eltham, advertise that they have opened a motor garage near the post office, where a car or petrol may be procured day or night, and repairs effected. (The Advertiser, 2 March 1923) The garage was an official RACV Road Service Station and offered vehicles for hire in addition to conducting repairs. Community memories after posting this photo on Facebook include: "I can remember my dad putting 2 shilling pieces into a bowser to get petrol after hours." The store built in 1925 was located on Main Road just south of Bridge Street (present day No. 820 Main Road). An extension was added to the right in 1939. The store was built in late 1925 at the same time as Mr C. Nicholls’s new store was constructed. Both were considered modern shops, and an improvement on most, business establishments of the time. Mr. Nicholls’s store included alongside it a modern, weatherboard villa residence. Mr. Burgoyne’s store incorporated the post and telegraph office, which was operated by John Neville Burgoyne’s half-aunt, Miss Anne Hunniford until her death in 1928 at which time J.N. Burgoyne became postmaster. The unsealed footpath in front is reasonably extensive as not visible is a concrete kerb and channel which was laid from the Post Office to John Street during Nov-Dec 1926. Footpath construction in front of Burgoyne’s store commenced August 1942. The extension to the right of the store was erected in 1939 for a new telephone exchange adjacent to the store and post office. A continuous telephone service operated by Mr Burgoyne and his family commenced operation 18 November 1939. Approximately 70 extensions were routed through the new exchange, 40 of which were transferred from the Greensborough Exchange. Entry to the exchange was via a separate door on Main Road or via the shop. The public telephone was initially mounted on the wall but later moved to the street. All travel was mostly by walking and school children walked to town each November 11 Memorial Service.The Reynolds family were early settlers in Research. The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were taken by Tom Prior, the maternal uncle of Ivy Reynolds, around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. The photographs are a reminder of the rural nature of Research and Eltham and its rich heritage. Guests at the West Riding Hall, Henry Petrie Community Centre, Montmorency on the occasion of a buffet dinner as part of the Shire of Eltham centenary celebrations. Left: Mr Higgins, Methodist Minister, Eltham and Mrs Higgins and Brian & Irene Robertson, both Captains in the Salvation Army. Reverend William ‘Bill’ Leslie Higgins (b. 15/1/1925, Renmark, Victoria, d. 18/10/1998) and Mrs Ella May Higgins (née Leersen b. 3/11/1921, Avoca, Victoria, d. 24/5/2003). William was ordained to the Methodist Church of Australia on September 1, 1959. Bill and Ella were involved with many communities throughout Bill’s full-time service until 1989. These parishes included Underbool, Wycheproof, Drysdale, Wonthaggi, South Yarra, Eltham, Nathalia, Murchison and Seymour. Bill and Ella touched many thousands lives during their ministry. Bill passed away in 1998 while assisting with a Sunday evening service near Drysdale, and Ella continued to dedicate her time to others until her death in 2003. Information received via Brian and Irene Robertson's son, Mark (15 Dec 2023), noted that in 1969 they lived in Prahran and by 1971 they would have been appointed to Briar Hill (now Greensborough). Brian Robertson's parents and at least one set of his grandparents were also Salvation Army officers (primarily from Victoria), whilst Irene was originally from Perth and she had 2 other sisters that became Salvation Army Officers as well. Irene also had 3rd sister and younger brother who were linked to the Salvos (as was Brian’s brother). After several years in church work, Brian and Irene transferred over to the Social Services branch of the Salvos and worked with homeless men, broken families, drug & alcohol dependent clients (similar to what Brendan Nottle does in Burke St), family stores and eventually seniors (nursing homes). Brian, known as Robbie passed away in 2013, and Irene is currently living in a retirement unit. Two vehicles including a Holden FC Special Sedan and ca 1958 Ford 100 truck are parked outside the Eltham Produce Store, Main Road, Eltham near Arthur Street. The brick building has signage to promote Tanox Paint and Permoglaze products. It also sold hay and grain. Operated by John McLean and Son. Situated just south from opposite Arthur Street, opposite the Eltham Village Shopping Centre. To the right was Garnet Burgess' second hand scrap metal and bottles, then the blacksmith shop, which was later taken over by Garnet with second hand furniture and next door to that was Ray Staff's grocery store. The store was demolished by 1963 for the BP Evergreen Service Station. Located on what was referred to as Obelisk Corner, improvements have been been made since the unveiling in August 1919 with the provision of a stone retaining wall topped with a chain link and granite stone boundary, most likely in conjunction with improvements to the intersection into Main Road. Along with the use of the name Obelisk Corner, the Bridge Street bridge was also known as Obelisk Bridge. The Eltham Obelisk was originally located at the corner of Bridge and Main Roads in 1919. In 1943 (WW2) the local community commenced plans to establish the Eltham War Memorial, a living memorial to benefit the children as opposed to a one in stone as per the obelisk. The Eltham War Memorial Trust was established in 1945. In 1947 the Trust intended for the Obelisk to be relocated from Bridge Street and Main Road to the Garden of Remembrance which was planned as part of the Baby Health Centre which was to be the first of three buildings of the Eltham War Memorial to be built in 1951. In 1951 the Eltham RSL was invited to be represented on the Eltham War Memorial Trust. Around this time, with pending roadworks, the obelisk was relocated to the front garden of the Eltham RSL sub branch on Main Road for safe keeping. In 2007, a suggestion was proposed by Harry Gilham (President, EDHS) to John Cohen (ERSL) to claim a special site along with the historic Shillinglaw trees on the now vacant former Eltham Shire Office site adjacent to the Eltham War Memorial precinct for relocation of the obelisk. Reproduced on p73 of 'Pioneers & Painters' Two horse drawn carriages outside Thomson's hotel in Kinglake. One is carrying passengers. On the left attached to the hotel is the Post Office. Mrs Thomson was the postmistress who in 1927 had held the position for 43 years (since 1884). The licence for the house was obtained in 1908 by Mr. Harry Thomson who by 1927 was the oldest permanent resident in Kinglake, having been there about 50 years. The hotel was destroyed by bushfire in February 1926 and a new hotel constructed on the site in 1927 by owner and licensee, Mr Frank Thomson, Harry’s son. Another identity at the hotel is Mr W. S. The first Presbyterian Church service was conducted at the Orbost Station Homestead in 1885, during a visit by Sir William Clarke, who was accompanied by two ministers. The organist was resident Grace Jennings Carmichael. Services were later held in Mr J. W. Borland’s shop and the Mechanics Hall. In 1887 the land on which the church now stands was purchased from Mr James Hossack snr, for £50 ($100). The trustees were Mr John, Peter and Hugh Cameron, Mr John A Watt and Mr James Hossack Jnr. Timber from Richardson’s Tabbara Mill was used by builder Mr R. P Cameron and at a cost of £ 311.3.7 ($622) the church was opened January 9th 1898. This item is from the estate of Elsie Cooke. Elsie Cooke was a librarian in Orbost for many years. She was the daughter of John Cooke early Brodribb settler. Elsie Cooke lived all her life in Gippsland,. She was born at Brodribb in 1895 and died in 1970, Elsie Cooke lived at Bruthen for a short time and, in 1937, moved to live with her aunt, Miss Jean Munro. Miss Cooke was Librarian at the Mechanics Institute for many years. Kindness and consideration for other were Miss Cooke’s attributes and she endeared herself to all who knew her. She was a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church and a stalwart of the Ladies’ Guild, an energetic worker for the Municipal Auxiliary and a member of the Red Cross. (ref. Mary Gilbert This item is associated with the Presbyterian Church in Orbost. It is an example of early book-keeping and is also associated with Elsie Cooke.Two white paper accounts. The badge was issued by the Victorian branch (indicated by the 'V' on the reverse) of the Australian Legion of Ex-Servicemen and Women and is referred to as The Badge of Unity or Tri-Services badge, uniting the armed services of Australia; the Army (rising sun), the Navy (anchor) and the Air Force (pair of wings). The number '57' on the crown represents the year of paid membership; 1957. The badge belonged to Dr W R Angus, who served in the Australian Army as a military doctor during WWII. It was made in Melbourne by Stokes in 1957, around 100 years after the firm was established by Thomas Stokes in Mincing Lane, Melbourne. The firm was operating from Caledonian Lane/Post Office Place in the 1950s. The badge is one of a set of badges collected by Dr W R Angus from the organisations in which he was involved. They are now part of Flagstaff Hill’s comprehensive W.R. Angus Collection, donated by the family of Dr W R Angus, surgeon and oculist. Australian Legion of Ex-Servicemen and Women was formed in 1944 to "entourage fellowship and assist those who have served". The organisation is open to members from Australia, British Commonwealth and Allied ex-service personnel. The W.R. Angus Collection: - The W.R. Angus Collection includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material once belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) as well as Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus, up until 1969. It includes historical medical and surgical equipment and instruments from the doctors Edward and Thomas Ryan of Nhill, Victoria. Dr Angus married Gladys in 1927 at Ballarat, the nearest big city to Nhill where he began as a Medical Assistant. He was also Acting House surgeon at the Nhill hospital where their two daughters were born. During World War II He served as a Military Doctor in the Australian Defence Force. Dr Angus and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939, where Dr Angus operated his own medical practice. He later added the responsibility of part-time Port Medical Officer and was the last person appointed to that position. Both Dr Angus and his wife were very involved in the local community, including the planning stages of the new Flagstaff Hill and the layout of the gardens there. Dr Angus passed away in March 1970.This Badge of Unity, or Tri-Service badge, is significant for connecting Doctor Angus with organisations that support men and women who performed military service for Australia. The badge was for membership with the organisation, which supports ex-servicemen and women of the three military forces; Army, Navy and Air Force. The W.R. Angus Collection is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool. The Collection includes historical medical objects that date back to the late 1800s.Badge; a gold-coloured metal and enamel badge. The blue boomerang-shaped band is below an arch of blue, below a crown with a number and coloured red, white and blue. There are symbols in the centre; a rising sun, above a pair of wings, with an anchor in the centre of both. There is red and blue scrollwork behind the symbols. Inscriptions are on the front and back of the badge. There are two loops and pins on the back of the badge. It is a membership badge of the Victorian branch of the Australian Legion of Ex-Servicemen and Women and was made by Stokes in 1957. The badge has a Serial Number. The July 1973 appeal's target was $500,000, which with government subsidies aimed to pay for a nine-story building alongside stage one - a combined ten-storey teaching, research and medical centre. The new block was planned to provide the Austin Hospital with 218 additional beds, eight extra operating theartres and a comprehensive range of medical, diagnostic, therapeutic and anciliary services. "Freight forwarding" is the arranging of the shipping of goods from their point of origin to their final destination. Freight Forwarders worked as an intermediary between companies that needed to ship products and the shipping and transportation firms that could ensure delivery. A key element of "freight forwarding" was the advice and professional handling of documentation and customs requirements provided. Early "freight forwarders" tended to be innkeepers who forwarded on the luggage of their hotel guests. One of the first "freight forwarding" companies was established by Thomas Meadows in 1836 which made it one of the earliest freight companies in Europe. More reliable rail and steamships were beginning to be used to transport goods and this created a demand for the new "freight forwarding" industry. The combination of railroads and steamships became very important in the late 19th and early 20th century. International shipments became common and freight forwarding that could handle their complexity became an integral part of the manufacturing and shipping landscape. Thomas Meadows & Company Ltd moved to offices in Milk Street, London in 1854 (where they remained until 1969 when they moved out of the city to Leytonstone) and continued in the freight business until 1987 when the company was acquired by Rockwell International Freight. The growth of Thomas Meadows & Company Ltd coincided with the growth and development of the colony of Victoria with an increasing need for the transporting of large numbers of people as well as important goods required by the growing colony - furniture, spirits, food, clothing, agricultural implements, household items etc. In the late 1840's only two or three overseas ships a month visited Melbourne but by late 1852 (after gold was discovered) more than a dozen ships arrived each week. By 1939, Thomas Meadows & Co. Ltd. had offices in Canada, U.S.A., New Zealand, France, Belgium and in Flinders Street Melbourne. This poster was sold by "Smarts Authorised Newsagency" in 1988 in Warrnambool - a business that had been owned by Neil and Shirley Smart at 168 Timor Street, Warrnambool since 1976. Previously it had been "Reed's Newsagency and Book Shop" (a local business established by William Reed circa 1912 and known as "William Reed Bookseller and Stationer"). The original owners, Reed's Newsagency and Bookshop were operating the shop in 1939 which suggests the poster may have been on display (for the information of their customers) in their shop at that time. This poster is significant through its association with Thomas Meadows and Co. Ltd. who is considered to be the founder of the "freight forwarding" industry in the early 19th century. It is an example of advertising used by shipping agents in the mid-19th to early 20th centuries. Its information includes the addresses of the firm's different offices in the U.K. and abroad, ships, shipping lines and ports used and the timetable the vessels were likely to follow. It is also significant through its association with a well known and long standing local Warrnambool business.A 1939 Timetable of "Australian Sailings" produced by the shipping agents Thomas Meadows and Co Ltd. It lists all their ships (plus dates and ports) sailing from the UK to Australia as well as the addresses of their offices in other cities in the U.K., Canada, U.S.A., Australia, New Zealand, France and Belgium. It has three vertical columns depicting (from left to right) January to June sailings, a simple 1939 calendar and their July to December 1939 sailings. The poster is attached on the top and bottom to two thin black metal strips. The top strip has a metal ring with a hole. The Salisbury Clock Tower was built in memory of Arabella Roberts who died on 23 January 1892. The firm Smith of Derby installed the illuminated clock mechanism with four faces and was still responsible for maintenance when, in December 1970, it replaced the original gravity mechanism with a more modern movement. The original clock mechanism was sold to a customer in Providence, USA. In 1997, the new mechanism was completely refurbished and updated to include automatic adjustment for British Summer Time. At the same time the tower itself was restored, the main contractors for this work being R. Moulding and Co of South Newton. Smith of Derby continues to be responsible for maintaining the clock, and so this firm has now been providing a service to the City for over 100 years. This clear, green tinged, Half Whirley (or Whirly) salad oil bottle has been handmade by a glassblower from 1870s-1910s. A bottle with such elaborate decoration would have been sought after as there was no need to decant the sauce into another jug or bottle to make it acceptable for table service. It is possible that this bottle was recovered from the Loch Ard, wrecked in 1878. A diver found the bottle on a shipwreck in the coastal waters of Victoria about 100 years from when it was made. The diver who found this bottle has recovered objects from several different shipwrecks between the late 1950s and early 1970s. A sizeable proportion of those objects was from the wreck of the famous clipper ship Loch Ard. This salad oil bottle may very well have been amongst that ship’s cargo. It is part of the John Chance Collection. A paper titled ‘Glass Bottles from the Loch Ard Shipwreck (1878): A Preliminary Study’ by Iain Stuart, (published in Australian Historical Archaeology, 9, 1991) included a study of twelve salad oil bottles from the wreck of the Loch Ard. The bottles were of this same Half Whirley design (half meaning that it was Whirley on the upper half but not on the lower half of the body), as well as the same colour and size. A diagram of one of these twelve bottles matches the bottle in our collection. The paper mentions that eleven of the twelve bottles have a number on their base, just as this one has. It is estimated that foreign and salad oil bottles totalled four percent of all of the bottles carried as cargo on the ship. The Half Whirley bottle has side seams from below the lip to the base, indicating that the bottle was made in a two-piece mould that included the heel, body, shoulder and neck. The fancy ‘whirly’ twist pattern and panelled sides would have been cut into the mould’s inner surface. The uneven thickness of the ridge around the base comes from adding a separately moulded and embossed base after the bottle was removed from the mould. The applied finish (mouth and lip) was also added to the bottle. The elongated bubbles in the glass are evidence of the glass being mouth blown into the mould, thus forming the shape and pattern from the inside shape of the mould. The bottle probably had a glass stopper with a round top and wedge-shaped shank with a ground surface, allowing the bottle to be re-sealed. The ring between upper and lower lip allows the closure to be sealed and anchored. The embossed numbers are either “133” or “833” and may represent a particular bottle pattern, manufacturer or filler. Although the bottle is not currently linked to a particular shipwreck, it is recognised as being historically significant as an example of bottles imported for use in Colonial Victoria in the mid-to-late 19th century. This whirley salad oil bottle is matches the whirley salad oil bottles recovered from the Loch Ard in the 1990s, adding depth of interpretation to the array of salvaged Loch Ard artefacts in Flagstaff Hill’s collection. The salad oil bottle is an example of the type of food condiment containers that were used in Victoria’s early days. The bottle is also significant as it was recovered by John Chance, a diver in Victoria’s coastal waters in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Items that come from several wrecks, including the Loch Ard, have since been donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s museum collection by his family, illustrating this item’s level of historical value. It has five plain panels, one wider than the others. Side seams run from below the lip to the heel. The heel of the bottle is uneven in width, height and density where it joins the body of the bottle. The base is not level. Embossed characters on base. Glass has elongated bubbles towards the base and orange-brown sediment inside, on one side. The Merle Bush Trefoil Guild was registered in Bendigo on 18/06/1981.The decision to disband the Merle Bush Trefoil Guild was made at a General Meeting on 17/02/2016. The group agreed to continue as the Merle Bush Friendship Group. The Australian Trefoil Guilds connect women who are either actively involved in Girl Guiding or have a history with Girl Guiding.
