This is the biography of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), a famous and influential English Protestant preacher who attracted a great following throughout the British Empire and U.S.A. He reached the masses by producing many religious tracts costing one penny and publishing his sermons and his John Ploughman books with their simple homilies. It appears that many of his books were in Warrnambool homes in the 19th century.This book is of interest as it details the life of Charles Spurgeon, a person whose sermons and writings were familiar to many people in Warrnambool in the 19th century. The Warrnambool Examiner newspaper frequently carried news items about Spurgeon’s eloquent preaching and the crowds he was drawing. It also published some of his sermons and reported at length his final illness and death. One of the photograph albums in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society includes a photograph of Charles Spurgeon and his wife, thus appearing to indicate his popularity and influence extended as far as Warrnambool and district. This Bible was owned by John Glasgow, a Wangoom farmer. His father, Robert, settled in Blackwood Hill near Wangoom in the 1850s. John Glasgow was a celebrated cheesemaker who won many prizes locally and overseas and a Warrnambool Shire Councillor from 1880 to 1886 and from 1892 to 1906. He was a Sunday School teacher at the Wangoom Presbyterian Church for 50 years and an Elder for 42 years. The book contains the names and birth dates of the extended Glasgow family and the names include Linnett, Glasgow, Coulstock and Anderson.This Bible is of considerable interest because of its connection to the John Glasgow and other members of his family. This is a leather-covered book with gold lettering on the spine. The cover overlaps the pages for extra protection. The pages are gilt-edged. One page has come apart from the binding and several other pages are partly detached from the spine. All the inscriptions are hand-written in black ink. One is a religious verse which has been pasted on to the inside of the front cover and on another page are listed the names and birth dates of 18 members of the Glasgow extended family. This book was a prize awarded to Miss Middleton, a pupil at Ormiston House College, East Melbourne in 1887. The Principals of the school were the Misses Singleton and their father, Dr John Singleton was a practising doctor in Warrnambool from 1860 to 1865. He had an important influence on Warrnambool, establishing several Total Abstinence Societies and campaigning for improved health conditions for pastoral workers in the district and the aborigines at Framlingham. In Melbourne Dr Singleton and his wife worked tirelessly for the underprivileged. He established many institutions for the less fortunate, including the Prisoners’ Aid Society, the Children’s Hospital, lending libraries, cottages for widows, shelters for homeless men and women, a society for the protection of animals and the Collingwood Free Medical Dispensary. He died in 1891 at Ormiston House, his daughters’ school and home. It is not known which of the Singleton daughters ran the school and no information has been found on Miss Middleton. This book is of considerable interest as it has a close connection to Dr John Singleton, important not only in the social history of Melbourne but also in the history of Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 160 pages with 16 pages at the back of the book of advertisements for other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is brown with a sketch of a young man and lettering in gold and an ornamental floral pattern on the front cover. The gold lettering and the ornamental floral pattern are also on the spine. This book, ‘Tom Wallis’ written by Louis Becke was awarded as a third prize to Bertie Wilson by the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School in 1910. Grasmere is a small settlement about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool and was settled in the 1840s by pastoralists prior to the founding of Warrnambool. The Grasmere Presbyterian Church and Sunday School were established in 1898 though services had been held prior to this date in an older church which was converted at that time to house the Sunday School. The Sunday School was burnt down in 1914 and later rebuilt. Mr Paton, the Sunday School teacher in 1910, was on the Board of Management of the church in 1911. This book is significant because it is a memento of the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School of 1910. Sunday School attendance was a strong feature of the religious, educational and social life of many children in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Sunday Schools still operate but have fewer children attending in relation to the numbers of Protestant churches adherents. This is a hard cover book of 320 pages plus several pages at the end detailing other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is dark red with an illustration in black, red and grey colours of two sailors aboard a ship. The book was a prize given to Bertie Wilson from the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School in 1910. There are several illustrations (black and white plates) inserted throughout the book. This book, ‘Angel’s Brother’ by Eleanora H. Stooke was a prize given to a pupil (name unknown) by the Christ Church Sunday School, Warrnambool in 1909. The Sunday School of the Anglican Church in Warrnambool dates from the 1850s and by 1909 it was an established tradition for most children whose parents belonged to the Anglican Church to attend a Sunday School. In 1906 there were about 30 teachers taking 45 pupils in the morning session and 177 pupils in the afternoon session. The highlights of the year were the Sunday School picnic held at various venues and the annual prizegiving day. In 1909 a cantata, ‘The Fairy Chain’ was performed by Sunday School students in the Oddfellows Hall. The Vicar in 1909 was Archdeacon Peacock (1906-1912) and in 1908 he introduced a Church Stamp System at the Sunday School whereby children were given stamps and pictures for an album to record their attendance and instruction. This book is significant because it is an example of the type of prize given to the prizewinners at the Christ Church Sunday School in Warrnambool in 1909. The prize, a book, has a story that has heavy Christian religious and moral overtones and the English Religious Tract Society produced books especially for the Sunday School prizegiving market. This is a book offering the reader ways to combat mental and spiritual stress. The author, the Rev. Gordon Powell (1911-2005) was born in Warrnambool to Louisa and George Powell. His father was a dentist in Kepler Street Warrnambool. Gordon Powell was educated in Melbourne and was a Presbyterian Minister in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and U.S.A. He was an R.A.A.F. chaplain in World War Two and established the Alcoholics Anonymous organization in Victoria. At St. Stephens Church in Sydney he attracted large attendances at both his Sunday and week-day services and became well-known for his religious radio broadcasts. He wrote several books and many articles for religious journals. This book is retained because it is the only piece of writing we have by the Rev. Gordon Powell who was born in Warrnambool in 1911 and was one of the most influential Presbyterian Church ministers in Australia in the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 128 pages. This Bible originally belonged to members of the Orr family who came from Scotland and had a property at Addington near Learmonth in central Victoria (from the 1860s). Many families in the 19th and early 20th centuries had family bibles which were read individually by family members or read aloud to family members, especially on a Sunday. Many of these large-size bibles were used to record family information (births, deaths, marriages), though this one does not have any information recorded. This Bible is retained as a splendid example of a 19th century family Bible. It will be very useful for display. This is a hard-cover book with gilt edging on the pages. It has a leather cover with heavy gold embossing on the front and back covers. Inserted in the embossing are gold religious symbols and images. The Bible contains 45 chapters with the Old and New Testaments and other biblical and religion- related articles. There are many black and white illustrations and some colour illustrations. During 1877 - 1891 Ballarat College accepted enrolments from female students. The school holds the original register of this period and notes that catherine Proctor entered the school in 1878 when she was 15. She went on to be awarded Dux of the female cohort in 1879.
