This is a reader produced for schools in Victoria in 1909. It contains many simple fables and stories and some phonetic instruction at the beginning of the short articles. It has no specific Australian content. The inscription includes the name ‘Stanley Bell’. There were several Bell families in the Wangoom area early in the 20th century, including one teacher associated with the Wangoom State School. Stanley Bell may have belonged to one of these families. Walter Davies had a book shop in Timor Street, Warrnambool from the late 19th century and three generations of the Davies family were proprietors of this shop over the years. This book is of educational and social interest as an example of the readers used by primary school children in the early 20th century. This is a soft cover book of 80 pages. This exercise book has been used by Winnifred (Winnie) Goodall in 1916 when she was a pupil at the Warrnambool Technical School. The material in the book mostly consists of letter-writing practice for business purposes. The Goodalls were pioneer settlers in the Warrnambool district with William and Ellen Goodall arriving in the area in the late 1840s. Eventually they had a property named Wanstead on the Allansford Road in East Warrnambool. One son, William, was an early manager of the Framlingham Aboriginal Settlement. Another son, Thomas, was a Warrnambool law clerk and Winnie, (born 1901 to mother Leah), was his granddaughter. The Warrnambool Technical School was established in 1913.This exercise book is of interest as an example of school work completed by a Warrnambool Technical School student in 1916. It is also of interest because it belonged to Winnie Goodall, a member of an important pioneering family in the Warrnambool district. This is a school exercise book with a cardboard cover and 17 double pages. The cover has a mottled pattern of brown and mauve and the pages have been attached by metal staples but the staples have been removed. The pages have blue ruled lines with handwritten material in blue and black ink. Some of the pages have red hand-drawn lines. The cover is slightly torn. Gethla served in the Australian Nursing Corps in WW2. This book was given in 1943 by the Warrnambool Technical School to Joyce Goodall. Considering that World War Two was in progress at the time, the book was an expensive one to be given as a school prize. But the donor was Miss Florence Lake, the daughter of John and Annie Lake and the step-daughter of George Rolfe of Lyndoch, near the Hopkins River mouth. Miss Lake inherited the property and built the residence known as Lyndoch that is today part of the Lyndoch Aged Care Facility. Miss Lake was known for her philanthropy and community work in Warrnambool. John King’s name has been crossed out in the book as he was no longer Principal in 1943. He was the founding principal of Warrnambool Technical School in 1911 and remained there for 29 years. The Goodall family established Wanstead Farm in East Warrnambool in the 19th century and Joyce Goodall was descended from the Mortlake branch of that family.This book is of interest because of its association in 1943 with Joyce Goodall, Florence Lake and Warrnambool Technical School. This book belonged to John Cowtan. He was a purchaser of land near Cassady’s Bridge in Warrnambool and an important and early settler in Port Fairy. The land that John Cowtan selected was bought by Williaam Cassady whose sister, Ann, was married to John Cowtan. Cassady established the property, Boughton where Cassady’s Bridge is today. This book came from a Cassady estate sale early in the 21st century. Between 1839 and 1844 John Cowtan was a ship’s captain for John Griffiths, a shipowner and entrepreneur. In 1844 Cowtan established a merchant trading and produce business in Port Fairy with John Bland. In the 1860 John Cowtan went to live in Melbourne.This book is of great interest because of its early date (one year after the founding of Warrnambool) and because of its association with John Cowtan, a pioneer settler of Port Fairy with connections to Warrnambool.This is a brown leather cover book of 385 pages. The spine has gold lettering. The binding has come apart and has been mended with white cotton material on the inside of the cover. The insides of the cover have a brown, white, blue and yellow mottled pattern. The cover is stained and torn at the edges and has a deep gouging on the front. This book was given in 1928 as a prize by the Dennington Presbyterian Sabbath (Sunday) School to Clive Cust. The Dennington Presbyterian Church was originally established in Drummond Street in 1918. In 1951 it was moved to Lindsay Street and demolished in 1968. The Cust families have been prominent in Warrnambool’s history since its foundation days. Clive Cyril Cust was born in Warrnambool in 1914 to Alex and Annie Cust. This book is of minor interest as an example of the type of book given to a teenage boy as a Sunday School prize in 1928. It is also of interest because of its connection to a member of the Cust family. This is a hard cover book of 216 pages. It has a brown cover with black lettering and ornamental borders on the front cover and spine and a coloured sketch of several military men on horseback on the front cover. Carshalton (the home of the aunt who gave the book?) is a town in Surrey, England. So far no connection has been found between the Mathews family and Warrnambool.This book has no known local provenance but it is of interest for its antiquarian value. This is a hard cover book of 381 pages. It has a brown cover with embossed ornamentation and gold lettering on the spine. This book has been written by Alan Mickle and tells of his impressions of England in 1908, 1923 and 1938. The proceeds of the sale of the book went to the ‘Food For Britain’ drive, an appeal that operated throughout Australia during World War Two. Alan Mickle, the son of David and Clara, was related to an early 20th century Shire Engineer in the Camperdown area and to Thomas Mickle, a prominent landowner, hotel keeper and photographer in early Warrnambool. Alan Mickle died in 1969. M.E. Clarke, whose signature appears in the book, was a descendant of a local Clarke family which included Angus Henry Clarke (b. 1866) who married Maggie Brown and Angus’ brother, John Sanders Clarke (b.1870) who married Bessie McMahon of Warrnambool. Bessie’s father, William was a prominent 19th century lawyer in Warrnambool. The book was donated to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society by Aileen Hassell who was the daughter of John and Bessie Clarke. This book is significant because of its links to the ‘Food For Britain’ appeal which was active in Warrnambool during World War Two. Also the book is significant because of its links to the Clarke and Mickle families, resident in the Warrnambool district in the late 19th and early 20th centuries This is a soft cover book of 93 pages. This book was awarded by the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School to Stuart Jenkins for his essay on the Apostle Paul. The teacher was H. Giles. The Giles family lived on the Allansford Road in the early 20th century. There were several Jenkins families in the Warrnambool district and some were early settlers in the Wangoom/Grasmere area. Some Jenkins families were associated with hotels in Purnim and Woodford and the properties Grasmere Station, Roseneath, Dyffen, Vrowen and Fala Park. St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at Grasmere was built in 1898 (the second church on the site). This is a hard cover book of 252 pages. The cover is brown with a multi-coloured illustration of a man and two children on the front cover and black lettering and border ornamentation on the spine and front cover. This is a first edition copy of the Victorian School Readers (Eighth Book) issued by the Education Department of Victoria. These readers were first published in 1928 and became standard texts for all school children up to Year Eight. They complemented the School Paper which had been published monthly for different year levels since the end of the 19th century. Both the Readers and the School Papers were in widespread use until the late 1940s and the early 1950s. William McCullagh and his wife Margaret had the property Oak Grove at Yangery at the end of the 19th century and in the early decades of the 20th century. Yangery is an agricultural area situated between Woodford and Koroit. There is a record of Silvie Jean McCullagh (parents – William and Margaret) born in 1914 and this is probably the person who owned and used this reader. This book is of interest not only because it is a first edition copy of one of the well-known Victorian School Readers but also because it was connected to the McCullagh family of Oak Grove, Yangery. This is a hard cover book of 260 pages. The cover was originally a burnished brown colour but the book has been covered with a mottled patterned cloth material (red, green and brown). The Loch Ard had left England in March 1878 and 90 days later on June 1st it was approaching the coast of Victoria when it wrecked off the coast near Port Campbell at what was to become known as Loch Ard Gorge. Two people survived, Eva Carmichael and Tom Pearce. While much has been recorded about the survivors, this is the first publication which looks at the other 51 people on board. This book lists where they came from, family histories and lists internet references for further information. This book is a novel by John Whitson published in 1907 and it could have belonged to either Thomas Redford Senior or his son. Thomas Redford Senior (d. 1909) was in the produce business with Frederick Stevens in Warrnambool in the 1860s and in 1879 he took over the business under the name of T.Redford and Co. This business operated at the corner of Fairy and Timor Streets. Thomas Redford Junior was a Major in World War One. He was killed at Gallipoli and his body was recovered from the site of his death by members of his company who were also from Warrnambool. Notable among these men was Paul McGinness, a war hero who was later to found the airline Qantas. This book is of interest as it belonged to a member of the Redford family, prominent in business in Warrnambool and in military exploits in World War One. The book gives us a idea of which novelists were popular reading in the early years of the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 283 pages. It has a light brown cover with lettering in black, gold and brown, a colour image of a rose on the spine and a colour image of a house and a car on the front cover. This school reader was used by Edmond and Mary Grace at Laang State School. Laang is in the Western District and is eight kilometres from Garvoc and ten kilometres from Panmure. The Laang State School opened in 1875 with a new building being erected in 1876 and additions being added in 1889. The school is now closed. Edmond Morgan Grace was born to William and Mary Grace in 1886 and died in 1953. Mary was his sister. Charles Hider, with his brother James, were early settlers in Warrnambool and both ran book shops in the town. This book is of moderate interest as an example of a late 19th century school reader and as one used at Laang State School by the Grace family. This is a brown hard cover book of 398 pages. The cover has an embossed patterning and lettering. The binding has come apart and has been mended with white adhesive tape. Some pages at the front and back are missing. This Bible was given in March 1916 to Private Henry Havelock Rogers (1895-1917), the son of Joseph and Ellen Rogers of Warrnambool. He left Australia in April 1916 as a member of the 14th Battalion (17 Reinforcement Group) and died in France in April 1917 as a result of wounds. The cousins named on the card were the three older children of Arthur and Agnes Rogers, also of Warrnambool. Joseph and Arthur Rogers were brothers. The Bible was found in the MacDonald Street, South Warrnambool home of Bill Rogers, another son of Arthur and Agnes Rogers not born until the 1920s (deceased estate item). This item has a particular poignancy as it was given to a Warrnambool World War One soldier who was killed in action. Perhaps he carried the Bible with him and it was returned to his family after his death. This is a brown leather-covered book of 822 pages. The cover extends over the edges of the pages and has gold lettering on the front cover and spine. The pages are gilt-edged and there are several colour maps at the end of the book. These little tins were available for soldiers to buy before embarking to the first world war. As the candles and matches are contained within the tin , it would have been a ideal way to keep both dry. The lid of the tin could also have been useful as a windshield. The tin was donated in memory of Les Lawlor. James Leslie Lawlor was born in Mepunga and lived in Warrnambool and enlisted in October 1916. He was discharged as medically unfit as he had broken his wrist three years previously and the break had failed to heal well. The tin was donated in his memory by his sister Vera Maguire This item with its link to World War 1 soldiers has historical significance to Australians in general but is also a link to a local family. On the inside front cover are the names of George Phillips and Jessie Kerr, giving their marriage date and the birth dates of four of their children. Charity Lamerton Phillips (1872-1942) was the daughter of George and Jessie Phillips of Nirranda and she married Frederick Bonnett and farmed in the Mepunga district. This book is of interest because of its age and because it contains family information on the Phillips family of Nirranda. Cattlemen wore coats when working with their cattle especially during the winter in the Kiewa Valley and when travelling on horses with cattle to, on and from the High Plains where they stayed for days during summer attending and mustering their cattle. The coats protected the cattlemen from harsh weather conditions including snow which sometimes fell in summer. This coat was owned and worn by Richard Marum who owned a farm in Tawonga south. He was the descendant of Kyran Marum, the stockman, who worked for Georgina Huggins. Brown leather full length coat with collar, lapel, long sleeves and buttoning up the front. The Chick brothers, Alf, Les and Allan, plus friends, began trout fishing and camping in the Kiewa Valley before the early 1930s. Les continued his connection with the Kiewa River until his death in 1972. Fingerlings were placed in the Kiewa River from the early 1880s. Keegan's Bridge is a crossing near Upper Gundowring and about 4 km south east of Dederang. References to the crossing were made in the early 1900s and a petition presented to Council in 1904 calling for a bridge.The bridge was built and opened in 1907. The photos are of the release of fingerling trout in the Kiewa River, thought to be at Keegan's Bridge. The fingerlings were transported in drums on the back of trucks. The photos are c1940s.The Kiewa Valley has been a popular spot for fishermen, tourists and campers from the 1880s. One of the many attractions has been the excellent fishing along the Kiewa River due to the regular release of fish especially brown trout. This continues to the present day (2020) when a few fish were marked with $$ signs for the lucky fisherman who caught them. The Catholic Church in Dederang began with services in peoples' homes whenever a priest was available 2 or 3 times a year. The priest would ride from Myrtleford. The first church was built in 1883 and was used by families in the Ovens, Kiewa and Mitta valleys.The church was used by residents in the Kiewa Valley. It describes conditions and life styles of the time. Also peoples' religious beliefs and commitment. Cattle grazing on the Bogong High Plains during summer commenced in the 1840s and continued for many years. The Soil Conservation Authority recorded each family's area boundaries which were updated in June 1972 and continued to be adjusted until cattle were banned in 2005. The tradition of cattle grazing continues to be controversial.Holders of grazing rights for grazing on the Bogong High Plains were allocated specific areas recorded by the Soil Conservation Authority in 1972.
