... business in Fairy Street as a coach builder in a partnership known... Street as a coach builder in a partnership known as Robinson ...This plate comes from the Registered Office of F. Morse Pty Ltd. The name ‘Morse’ has been associated with the local Warrnambool transport industry for more than 100 years from the horse-drawn era to the advent of motorized transport. Frederick Morse was the son of Henry Morse, a teacher at The Grange, Hamilton and at Grasmere in the early 1870s. In 1883 Frederick Morse started business in Fairy Street as a coach builder in a partnership known as Robinson and Morse and in 1891 he set up a business on his own, the Victoria Carriage Works in Lava Street with branches in Port Fairy and Koroit. By the 1890s he was employing 27 people and winning State awards for his Abbot buggies. By the 1920s the Morse business had moved to motorized transport, expanding over the years to car dealerships, caravans, panel works and reconditioning and truck building with the subsidiary businesses of Morsmilk and Morsbearings (both later sold). This plate is of strong significance as a memento of a business in Warrnambool that has been prominent in the local transport industry for 120 years. It is also a memento of the Morse family, notable 19th century settlers in the town and important in local community affairs since that time. This is a wooden frame with a glass front. The frame is painted a grey colour and has holes at the top and bottom for affixing the frame to a wall or door. Behind the glass the words ‘Registered Office F. Morse Pty Ltd’ are painted or incised on to a wooden slab. The words are in yellow and red paint. The frame is a little chipped and the inside of the glass is somewhat blotchy and stained. ‘Registered Office’ ‘F. In the nineteenth ...James Reid was born in Scotland near Glasgow and came to Victoria as a young man in 1854. Shortly after arriving he came to Bacchus Marsh where he lived until his death in 1902 at the age of 74 years. For most of these years he conducted a wheelwrights and coach builders business in Bacchus Marsh. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wheelwrights and blacksmiths played an essential role in the functioning of the whole community. Before the industrialisation of manufacturing, wheels and other components of vehicles for transport, all metal objects, including farm implements, building requirements and domestic utensils were made by hand. As mechanisation of industry increased, the smith commonly performed the role of farrier in the times when horse power was pivotal to all aspects of society. Complementing this work, the forge was often allied with a wheelwright's shop. These premises also acted as a meeting place for the men of the town, where news was shared and friendships forged.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. An image depicting a wheelwright and blacksmith's shop, with a group of men, boys and a woman shown in front. Two men are wearing the work clothes of the blacksmith, including the split leather apron worn by farriers to enable them to work on the hooves of the horses needing shoeing. Two young boys are standing by the door. A portly gentleman in formal clothes stands before the shop. The house shown at the rear was James Reid's residence. Two people, an elderly gentleman and a younger woman, are seated in a jinker on the road to the side of the shop. A collection of wheels and farm tools leans on the walls. People came from far and wide to be enlightened, educated and entertained, with 70,000 visitors passing through the doors during the three months of the exhibition. Not bad for a town with a population of only 6,500 and a further 9,200 living in the surrounding shire! Planning began at a public meeting attended by 60 people in May 1896 and the exhibition opened in December the same year on the site of the current Light House Theatre. The architects submitted plans for four annexes, complete with turrets, a fernery and a giant flagpole. The site covered 1 acre and included a Marine court, industrial exhibits, an education court, defense and agriculture court, stalls, coach builders, dairy show, an art court and provision for a smorgasbord of various entertainment. The Advertiser on 15 Sep 1922 has a display advertisement on page 2 indicating that Hurstbridge bakery 'W. Body wishes to notify the Public of Hurstbridge and surrounding district that he has purchased Mr Oliver's business'. The Advertiser, Friday 10 November 1922, page 2: Mr J. D. Chalmers, who runs the motor service from Hurstbridge to Kinglake, has just had a large, body built on a two-ton motor, which will be serviceable for either 25 passengers or general goods. The work was entrusted to Mr. D.G. Graham, motor and coach builder, Hurstbridge, who completed it within a month, the finish, painting, etc.. being quite up to the standard of a city shop. The mail coach operated the route between Kinglake and Hurstbridge motor route, on which Mr. Sharpe had pioneered and run a motor mail route with a bus which carried 20 passengers, for many years but Sharpe's license for his motor bus was refused by the Country Roads Board mid 1930 as his bus was considered too large . In February 1935, Mr Sharpe was granted a license to carry passengers between Hurstbridge and Kinglake and Mr Kell between Kinglake and Hurstbridge. In 1936 the mail contract from Heidelberg to Knglake was via car and members of the community were concerned that there was no further any conveyance of passengers from Hurstbridge to Kinglake. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). He moved from Prahran to Surrey Hills. His son Ernest worked with him as a coach painter and also worked as a painter undertaking intricate hand painting on early cars. Their other son Martin played for the Surrey Hills Football Club. In return for the support given to the club by Mrs Emily Kleinert, the club built a rotunda in South Surrey Park as a memorial to her. Alan Holt research: Lot 6 was sold to Martin Kleinert by Karl Richter in 1860 together with a portion of another adjacent lot. From 1860-1885 Martin worked it as a market garden leasing some land for grazing when it was not required for gardening. He died in 1898. In a formal document, William declared he was the son of Martin "who purchased land in 1860, died in 1898 and the land has been continually occupied by father and family since. It has been cultivated as a market garden; when not being used for gardening it was let for cultivation and grazing." William died in 1939 and the property passed to his sons Martin and Ernest. The Kleinert land extended from Union Road to Essex Road. They ran horses, ducks and fowls and Emily Kleinert grew flowers. The Kleinert property later became the South Surrey Park. The family sold the land to the Camberwell Council in the 1950s. Ernest and Ida Kleinert lived on the corner of Scotsdale and Warrigal Roads. Alexander Robinson, the son of James and Jane Robinson (farmers) was born in Warrnambool in 1862. He was an award-winning coach and carriage builder, firstly in partnership with Frederick Morse in Fairy Street and later with his own company A. Robinson and Co. By the early 20th century he was also selling and repairing motor cars. Alex Robinson was a Warrnambool City Councillor from 1904 to 1910 and from 1922 to 1927 and Mayor on two occasions. His business site is now occupied by Callaghan Motors. Although this is only a photocopy it is of great interest as the photocopied photographs are clear and show us exactly what type of horse-drawn vehicles were in use in the Warrnambool area at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The firm of A. Robinson was a prominent one in Warrnambool and Alex Robinson was active in civic affairs in the town. This is a photocopy of a booklet produced by Alexander Robinson advertising his Steam Carriage Works in the early 1900s. The pages are bound together with a plastic clip and the back cover is a piece of stiff cardboard. The booklet contains black and white photographs of the factory building and of the buggies, wagons, jinkers and carts for sale. An early Alistair Knox design and build, this home was purchased by George Coop in 1968. Eltham builder, Graham Rose, extended the original Alistair Knox structure over the foundation excavation dug by George. Graham organised the brick walls where required, raised all frame work and laid the steel tray roof. George did all external/internal wall cladding, made all opening windows, sliding and swinging doors, stairs and general interior timber cabinet work. Bedroom wardrobe doors came from scrapped Victorian Railways country coaches. This particular view shows the original Alistair Knox design and materials. The photo was taken where the original external wall was located and knocked down to add the extension.Digital TIFF file Scan of 35mm Ilford XP1 black and white transparencyalistair knox design, eltham, graham rose, houses, mount pleasant road -

Photograph, Jasper Road Near Erith Lane 1920, 1920
View of Jasper Road, near Erith Lane taken in 1920. The road is tree lined with two significant gum trees in the foreground. This photograph has a detailed inscription on the back handwritten by John Lundy-Clarke in 1974.Jasper Road near Erith Lane 1920. This road has only a narrow right of way. It was put in as a road to serve “Cherry Farm”, connecting it to the Coach Road at the Elbow in 1904. It joins a wide surveyed road running from Inverness Road to the Coach Road at the Elbow and could possibly have been surveyed by Thomas Hand at the same time as Inverness Road. The name Jasper now applies to full length between Erith Lane and Coach Road. McGivern Bros widened it in 1937 and J L Clarke removed and stored much of the rock quarried in the widening. This was later sold to Dick Moorby who sold it to the builders of St Michaels Church in Falls Road. Comment by John Lundy-Clarke 10.5.1974 jasper road, erith lane, john lundy-clarke -
