This tie was given in 2007 to members of the Melbourne to Warrnambool Society, a support group to assist the Warrnambool Citizens Road Race Committee to stage the Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycle Road Race in that year. This group was operating for some years early in the 21st century and there were some individual members but mostly the members represented businesses and other organizations in Warrnambool and district. The Melbourne to Warrnambool Road Cycling Classic commenced in 1895 and has run annually for most of the years since that date. The race is the second oldest one-day cycling race in the world and the longest one -day race in the Southern Hemisphere.This tie is of considerable interest as it is a memento of one of the most important events in Warrnambool's sporting calendar, a cycling race known throughout Australia and internationally. This is a man's tie made of polyester material. The tie is navy blue with a pattern in blue, white and yellow, a stylized version of an 'm' and a ''w', representing Melbourne and Warrnambool. Track cycle built by Eugene Cowley in 1949 for Ken Jenkin from the Geelong Amateur Cycling Club.Gene Cowley began building cycles in the 1890s and continued until the middle 1950s. He was the first president of the Geelong Amateur Cycling Club.Velos Track and Road Cycle. It has a steel frame, steel rims, rubber tyres, Brookes saddle, pedals with toe straps, handle bars for track racing and dual brakes. This machine is equipped with an early derailler gear- note change lever on down tube. Lunardelli came out from Trieste, Italy after World War 11 and worked for the Geelong Water Board. Lunardelli subsequently ceased full time cycling in order to make a living.This award indicates the important influence that immigrants had on the popularity and depth of cycling at the time in the Geelong region. Bendigo Sports Star Awards began back in March 1965 and were known as the Caltex Sports Star Awards. The first recipient was Eaglehawk cyclist Frank McCaig and the Awards have grown in stature ever since. Jack was well known for his commentary at races at the Geelong velodrome track after the war. This trophy was important in the years 1983-1988 as it recorded the winners of the prestigious Road Race run by the Geelong West Cycling Club over those years. The 1985 winner - Don Wilson was a two time Australian Open Road Race champion and also represented Australia in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico in the cycling road race. The first Warrnambool to Melbourne cycling race was held in October 1895. 24 riders started with only 7 finishing the race. W. Nicol was the winner of the inaugural race. Two months later on 14/12/1895 the race was run in reverse. For the ensuing 43 years it was mainly Melbourne to Warrnambool. Since 1939 it has been run mainly Melbourne to Warrnambool. The 2012 winner of this race was Floris Goesinnen from the Netherlands. He finished in a time of 7 hours and 23 seconds. He retired from cycling in 2014 to pursue further study in the Netherlands.The Melbourne to Warrnambool cycling race remains one of the longest and toughest one day cycling events in Australia. This medal therefore carries with it considerable importance and prestige in the sporting world. In 1903, an article in the Box Hill 'Reporter' noted that the Kew Flyer Cycle business had been started in 1893 by Harry F. Cooper, who was "the oldest cycle maker in the district". By 1903, the Kew Flyer business was located at 8 (later 14) Cotham Road where it was to remain an institution until its closure. Seven years later, W.D. Vaughan, in his 'Jubilee History of Kew, Victoria' (1910) wrote that: "Several cycling clubs have been born and died, suffering chiefly from the migration of the leading spirits in the organisations, but since 1900 the ‘Kew Flyer’ road race, instituted by Mr. H. F. Cooper, has been the cycling event of the year among local riders. It is run on the White Horse Road at Blackburn." Early newspaper reports record that distance of the Race was initially 10 miles but by 1906, the event was 15 miles, starting from the Travellers' Rest Hotel in Blackburn. Cooper's Kew Flyer business in Cotham Road introduced new technologies and models throughout its 56-years of operation. By 1908, it was claimed that the shop had been enlarged with new "workshops and [the] latest lathes and cycle building tools. [It] Is now one of the most up-to-date Cycle Works in Victoria". By the First World War, Cooper had expanded his business to include motorbikes with "Precision Engines". The Kew Flyer business and the annual road races continued through the War, even though a number of its staff left for the front. One of these was [Pte] Robert Charles Field Richardson, who joined the 6th Battalion, fought and was wounded at Gallipoli, and died of his wounds in a hospital in Alexandria, Egypt in 1915. In 1917, the death of Private H.S. Herbert was announced. He had been the winner of the Kew Flyer Cycle Road Race in 1913. He died in action in France, having fought at Gallipoli and in France at the Battle of Pozieres. The majority of bicycles advertised by Cooper were designed for men, although bikes for women and 'juveniles' were advertised as early as 1918, so they were probably manufactured throughout the period. Harry Cooper was to sell his Kew Flyer business in 1936, after 39 years of trading. The business he began continued until 1949.This is a very rare image [the location of the original is now unknown] of a Kew Flyer team. The photo was sourced and remained in the possession of the historian Dorothy Rogers, whose brother was an early member of staff in the firm. The photo is historically significant as it is the only known photograph of a Kew Flyer Team, and possibly the only known photo of Harry F. Cooper, the founder of the firm and a key figure in Victorian cycling history. Cooper, the proprietor of the Kew Flyer business in Cotham Road, Kew. Harry Cooper was the sponsor of one of the best known and oldest trader cycle races in Melbourne.
