The University of Ballarat (later Federation University_ inherited the Camp Street Arts Precinct. As the functions of the former public buildings were moved elsewhere, the Victorian Government of the time recognised the importance of maintaining the heritage buildings and the opportunity to create a cultural precinct extending from the Art Gallery. The 19th century architecture along Lydiard Street and the dogleg bend of Camp Street define the precinct. With substantial financial assistance from both State and Commonwealth Governments, the Art Gallery Ballarat has been extended through to include the 1884 Police Station on Camp Street. The Post Office building (1864-1887) was acquired for the University. The 1904 and 1941 Courthouses and the c1900 Public Library building were also included. Two new buildings have been constructed. This Chancellor's academic gown was worn by Professor David Caro during his time as the University of Ballarat's Chancellor from 1998-2005. Among his many roles during his long career, he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Melbourne, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Tasmania, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne & Interim Vice-Chancellor at Northern Territory University. The Chancellor's academic gown is of royal blue light weight woollen cloth trimmed with gold oak-leaf braid on the facings, yoke and bottom hem; and sleeves with one gold embroided frog at the shoulder and four chevrons of gold oak-leaf braid below the arm hole. Ballarat College of Advanced Education is a predecessor organisation of the University of Ballarat. Founders Hall is located on the University's Mt Helen Campus, and is now within the Caro Conference Centre. The Ballarat Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to the performance of fine music at the highest level possible, and was formed in order to provide both a performance opportunity for musicians in Ballarat and District and also to enrich the cultural life of the community. The home of the ensemble was at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education, and it was intended that the orchestra serve the needs of both education and the community.White, soft coloured programme. The Erard Concert Grand Piano was moved into the University of Ballarat 1870 Founders' Hall in March 1996. The piano was originally brought to Australia in 1904 for a brief tour by pianist Paderewski. Known as the 'Prince of Pianists' Paderewski selected the piano for his tour in preference to all other makes. The piano was later sold, and had little use since the concert tour. Before arriving at Mt Helen the piano was appraised by expert David Bloom who said it was in great condition for its age. .2) University of Ballarat Maintenance staff move the Errard Concert Grande into Founders' Hall. David Ancrum Alexander was born c1925 and died in 2015. He practiced medicine in Ballarat but also had a keen interest in drawing and painting, mostly water colour. The sketch books range from 1971 to 2012. Each appears to be related to a specific theme - people, places, and characters in novels. Often this is mentioned on the cover. He became a member of the Art Acquisition Committee at the University Campus at Mount Helen. A Thanksgiving Service was held in his honour at Federation University in the Caro Convention Centre on 27 March 2015.52 sketch books, spiral bound.
