... 49 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia ...Anna Box 1849- 1919 was born in Withyham, Sussex England had her 7th birthday en route from Liverpool to Australia. George Box 1808-1867 of Sussex England, married Mary Cripps in 1831 and with 3 three of their 4 four sons and 3 three of their 4 four daughters left Liverpool in the Sailing Ship 'Atlanta' in March 1856 to begin a new life in Melbourne, Victoria , Australia. Their baby daughter Cecilia Lydia died a few days later. Caroline Box, the eldest daughter, remained in England working as a cook until she joined the family in Australia in 1863. William Box 1834-1902, the eldest son of George Box, married Elizabeth Avis 1833- 1914 and they resided in Box Cottage 1865 -1914 where they established a market garden and raised 13 children. William and Elizabeth had emigrated in 1854 so George worked on their market garden before setting up in Patterson Road. Sadly Mary drowned in a water hole only 4 months after their arrival in Brighton. It is supposed that Elizabeth helped George raise the children while he established his market garden. George died from Tetanus following an infected broken leg caused by falling from his dray in 1867. Anna was a dressmaker and in 1881 she married Henry Pay , a painter, from London and they had 3 children . In 1907 the family lived on a 30acre property in Ringwood. which Anna bequeathed to her children. – Beatrice, Norman and Laura. In 1911 they moved to Surrey Hills where Anna died in 1919. Henry died in 1935 in Montrose where he was living with his son Norman Henry Pay, a farmer . Box Cottage Museum, a reconstruction of an early settler hut, is named after the Box family who resided there 1865 -1913 . William Box who, with his wife Elizabeth Avis Box and 13 children, lived and farmed on the block of land in Jasper Road, East Brighton ( now McKinnon / Ormond) that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841. George Box 1808-1867 migrated in 1856 and worked with his son William Box until he established a market garden in Patterson Rd . East Brighton ( now Bentleigh). Married Sarah Webb in September 1835, ordained 7 October 1835, sailed for Australia on 13 October 1835. Served at Parramatta, where his wife died on 16 February 1838. Married Elizabeth Shelley (1808 - 1866) daughter of William Shelley, formerly a missionary in Tonga and Tahiti in July 1939. Served in N.S.W., Victoria and South Australia. Elected President of the 1859 Conference. Granted leave in 1865 to return to England as the Australian representative to the British Conference. In 1994, the ANF Federal Executive passed a resolution to seek national pay increases of 8%. At this time, nurses had not had a pay rise since 1991. The Union noted that over the same period Victorian politicians had received 12.9% in pay increases. It is a follow-up to the previously very successful record of Australian Bird songs by Carl and Lise Weismann in 1957 - 58. All were recorded in their natural surroundings but for the Dingoes which they had to insert the howls of a group in a faunal reserve. The lyrebird was drawn from and excellent sequence by Harold Pollock. The book describes the Sound and Communication in Animals and Insect Sounds.A slim square hardcover book with text by Allen Keast and a record of Australian Bush Sounds. The cover has a photograph of a Black Swan nesting in open wetlands. Inside the left front cover is a pocket with an EP record by Carl and Lise Weismann. World War 2 has almost enveloped the globe and the Allies are having difficulty in containing the rapid expansion of Axis forces. It has been kept by a Legatee as a souvenir and found its way into the archives.Despite the reverses of the allied forces the cartoonist has maintained a positive outlook in his sketches about the outcome of the war. Contra entries represent the deposits or withdrawals of cash from bank or vice versa. Contra indicates transactions that affect both cash and bank.A large green cloth paper wavy patterned covered Norman Bros., Leger Book with burgundy tape on the spine. The end papers are blue marbled paper and the edges of the pages are marble coloured.This blank book was used by the United Berry Growers Association of Victoria as written on the front cover in copperplate writing. Inside the book on page A are three brief entries indicating which pages to see detailed accounts. Throughout the rest of the book various expenditures are listed, for example on pp. 71 and 72 is a list of General Expenses A/c. The Leger was used as a Statement of Accounts including Printing and Stationery and for other statements too. There are also two Cash Books, one with green wavy patterned covers and one with black paper hardcovers. Both have CASH BOOK stickers on the front with the name United Berry Growers Association of Victoria on one and the other has the initials U.B.G.A written in copperplate black ink. This particular book is one of two copies acquired together as part of the Laby Collection, the other being inscribed with Betty’s name, suggesting that this volume belonged to Jean Laby. At some point the ornament has been stuck in the book on the first page.This volume is a softcover book with green coated fabric cover and black lettering. The front cover is horizontally bordered top and bottom with a double black line. A flat, decorative ornament of a person playing a piano, threaded with a pink ribbon, is stuck with tape to the inside front page.Written inside front page with blue ink: ‘Jean / from D. K. A second quite damaged paper is: Wandin ? Progress Association Inaugurated 26th Oct 1912. The meeting was held Jan 11, 1913. It lists the monthly meetings and minutes taken up to March 28 1913. The third document is a copy of 13 typed pages from the Shire of Lillydale to Mr. S. Bradley, Hon. Secretary, Silvan Hall Committee, Silvan suggesting to the Committee that the attached plan for the maintenance and betterment for the hall be forwarded to the Public Health Department for approval. It includes a list of names of Guarantors and witnesses.A large red, blue and cream wavy lined paper patterned covered Norman Bros., Minute Book with burgundy tape on the spine. It belonged to Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) who was aged 11 when she received the album. Her sisters were Olive (1905-1912) and Dorothy (1910-1993). They were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnmbool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, early settlers in Warrnambool. The Misses Ardlie lived in their early years at Aroona in Princess Street in Warrnambool. The autograph album has handwritten contributions (verse and signatures) from family members and friends and twelve signatures of cricketers from the Australian Test series of 1928-1929. These are mostly English cricketers and include the signatures of Wally Hammond, Jack Hobbs, Harold Larwood and George Duckworth.This autograph book is of considerable interest, firstly as a memento of Agnes Ardlie, a member of a prominent family in Warrnambool in the 20th century and secondly, as an item of some significance in the cricket world with its signatures of some English cricketers on tour in Australia in 1928/29.This is an autograph album with a dark red leather cover and gold writing on the front cover. Inside the cover are pages in a green mottled pattern. The other pages are mostly white or cream with some coloured pages. Some pages have handwritten verse and signatures in black and blue ink. There is an entry on Page 173, the last page, for Expenses for 1915 & 1916 for the Silvan Progress Assoc.The Leger was used as a Statement of Accounts Processed Strawberries Apl - June 1939 and for other statements too. The last entry was completed on Nov 24 1939. Pp.173A large green cloth paper wavy patterned covered Norman Bros., Leger Book with burgundy tape on the spine. This blank book was used by the Silvan Progress Association in 1914 as written on the front cover in copperplate writing. Inside the book starts at page 64 so the pages 1 - 63 may well have been used in 1914 and they have been torn out. While practising there he married the local postmistress, Catherine Millington Baynes. Dr Scantlebury was the father of Dr Vera Scantlebury (later Dr Vera Scantlebury Brown). Vera Scantlebury was born at Linton in August 1889. The Scantlebury family moved to Cheltenham later that year.Original sepia photograph, head and shoulders portrait of a man with a moustache, who is wearing a suit with a white pocket handkerchief. The would gather at the club rooms at lunch times and after work to socialise, learn news from back home and sometimes enjoy a game of cards. The 'Club' was a home away from home for these men. Decades later, in the 1990s retired members often met at the clubrooms to play a social game of cards. The men photographed are from L-R: Bill Benias, Stathi Raftopoulos and Nicholas Raftopoulos; all were long time members of the Ithacan Club.A black and white photograph of three men sitting around a table and playing cards. -
