This journal has been produced in 1905 for the Government of Victoria under the direction of the Minister for Agriculture, the Hon. George Swinburne, M.L.A. It has articles on agriculture in Victoria, including an article on how to increase and improve our dairy products and an article on the Grasmere Butter Factory. This journal produced in 1905 is of considerable interest because it has an article on the inspection of the Grasmere Butter Factory and the resultant erection of a new building on the site. Dairying is a major industry in the Warrnambool area and this journal contains important historical information and photographs.This is a soft cover journal of 68 pages (pages 482 to 550 in Part 7 of a journal). This is a first edition copy of the Victorian School Readers (Eighth Book) issued by the Education Department of Victoria. These readers were first published in 1928 and became standard texts for all school children up to Year Eight. They complemented the School Paper which had been published monthly for different year levels since the end of the 19th century. Both the Readers and the School Papers were in widespread use until the late 1940s and the early 1950s. William McCullagh and his wife Margaret had the property Oak Grove at Yangery at the end of the 19th century and in the early decades of the 20th century. Yangery is an agricultural area situated between Woodford and Koroit. There is a record of Silvie Jean McCullagh (parents – William and Margaret) born in 1914 and this is probably the person who owned and used this reader. This book is of interest not only because it is a first edition copy of one of the well-known Victorian School Readers but also because it was connected to the McCullagh family of Oak Grove, Yangery. This is a hard cover book of 260 pages. The cover was originally a burnished brown colour but the book has been covered with a mottled patterned cloth material (red, green and brown). The cover is partly torn off at the bottom of the spine. The book has poetry and prose extracts and includes many black and white sketches, maps, photographs and illustrations. This is a copy of Bromfield’s 1856 map of Warrnambool and district. James Astley Bromfield was a pioneer settler in Warrnambool. He established a chemist’s shop in 1854, initially situated in Timor Street. He moved his shop to Liebig Street with a new building erected in 1875. Bromfield was a prominent resident of Warrnambool (Shire Councillor, Fire Brigade member, Cricket Club member, associated with horse racing etc). He was interested in preserving the history of Warrnambool and this map he produced in 1856 was an example of this interest.This is a copy only but this 1856 map is of prime importance as it contains the names of the original landowners of land in north Warrnambool and the surrounding district. This book has been given as an end-of-year prize to someone in the Warrnambool Corps in 1904. As the book is for a young person it is presumed that the recipient was in the Cadet Corps section of the local Volunteer Corps. Members of the Cadet Corps were usually from a unit formed within a school. As neither the Warrnambool Agricultural High School nor the Warrambool Technical School were established at that time the recipient was probably a pupil at a private boys’ school. This book is of interest as a prize given by the Warrnambool Corps to a local Warrnambool boy in 1904. It will be of greater interest if we can decipher the name of the Sergeant-Major and the name of the recipient. This is a hard cover book of 160 pages. It has an olive-green cover with an image in red, black and yellow of a young boy in front of some buildings. The front cover has black and red lettering and the spine has an image of a woman and the lettering in gold and red. The book has a full page black and white illustration at the front of the book and there are 18 chapters of text. There has been a book plate pasted on to the inside cover but there is now only a fragment left. What is visible is handwritten in black ink. ‘….. This stock measurer would have been used on a farm during the first half of the 20th century. A similar item with decimal measurements may perhaps be used today though mechanized weighing machines are now available. This stock tape measure has no known local significance but it is an interesting item and has its place in the history of agriculture in the district. It will be useful for display. This is a glassfibre measuring tape (imperial measure) in a circular brass holder. The tape has a metal clip at the end. The tape is yellow on one side (measuring weight of pigs) and red on the other side (measuring weight of cattle). The holder has a winding mechanism on the top attached by a brass screw. There is a knob on the winder to hold while turning the winder to bring out the tape to the measurement required and to retract it back into the holder. The holder has a black ridged pattern around the sides. This wooden tray has been purchased from the Warrnambool Fancy Goods shop of M. Giblett. She had taken over this shop early in the 20th century from Mrs Martha Wright who was well-known in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for her shop in Liebig Street (95 Liebig Street today) and for her needlework classes in the town. Many of her pupils won prizes at the local Agricultural Shows. This tray is of some interest as an object bought at the Wright/Giblett Fancy Goods Store in Warrnambool early in the 20th century. This is a rectangular-shaped wooden tray with four raised pieces of wood attached to form edges. The tray has been painted yellow. There is a label on the base of the tray indicating the shop from where it was purchased. This calendar has been distributed as a advertising item for Earl’s agricultural machinery and oil depot. The business was situated at the corner of Lava and Kepler Streets in Warrnambool. The name, Acmino’ stood for Allis-Chalmers, Mitchell’s Implements, Neptune Oils’. Distributing calendars at Christmas time for the following year was, and still is, a popular advertising tool for businesses. This calendar is of minor interest as an example of the use made by businesses in the 1940s of calendars as advertising tools. It also has a local Warrnambool connection, the agricultural machinery business of F. Earl. This is a 1946 calendar with a buff-coloured sheet of crinkled paper with a brown border. It has a coloured photograph of two men droving cattle near a river and it ispasted on to the paper with a brown border around the photograph. The calendar for 1946 is printed on to the paper and also in monthly sheets pasted on to the paper on top of each other. The printing on the calendar is brown. This is a camera that belonged to Dr Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959). Born and educated in Tasmania, Dr Holmes completed his medical degree at Melbourne University. He commenced a medical practice in Warrnambool in 1906 and was the Honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool (foundation President of Warrnambool Rotary Club, a member of the local Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, the Warrnanbool Hospital Committee member, long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee. Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed bowls, golf and fishing. This is an interesting item as it comes from the Horace Holmes collection and he was a doctor who was prominently associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for well over 50 years. .1 This is a camera with an inside concertina mechanism and an outer covering of brown leather and silver-coloured metal. The camera has a leather handle and is scuffed and rusted in parts. .2 The cover is made of brown cloth and has leather tabs on the sides and on the tab fastener. The fastener has a metal buckle. This item belonged to Dr Horace Holmes. It is a floating thermometer used to determine when bath water was suitable for use. The reference to Dr Forbes is to John Forbes, a Scottish physician who recommended therapeutic bathing at a time when taking a bath at home or in a hospital was not a common practice (19th century). This badge belonged to Mirth Marfell who was a student at Warrnambool High School from 1929 to 1930 and from 1935 to 1936. Warrnambool High School was established as an Agricultural High School in 1907 and, after a merger with Warrnambool North Technical School, it is known today as Warrnamboool College. Mirth Marfell, the daughter of Henry and Helena Marfell, was born in Warrnambool in 1919. Her grandfather, John Marfell, a Warrnambool hay and corn dealer and miller connected to the Warrnambool Co-operative Milling Company, was prominent in community and civic affairs in the town. Mirth Marfell completed her nursing training at the Warrnambool Base Hospital and served in the Australian Army Nursing Service in World War Two for five years. She then became the first Australian nursing organizer for the Victorian Royal College of Nursing. These scales come from the Nullawarre Post Office. Nullawarre is a small settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool. The area was settled in the late 1860s and 1870s and the first school was opened in 1878. The main agricultural pursuit in the Nullawarre district is dairying. The Nullawarre Post Office still operates in the General Store building. This set of scales is of interest as it is a memento of the equipment used in country Post Offices one hundred years ago or more. Scales such as these may still be in use but electronically-operated scales are more likely to be used today.This is a set of metal weighing scales with two trays, one oval in shape and one round, on a balancing mechanism. This mechanism has two ornamental upright metal pieces. The scales are affixed to a wooden base in a rectangular shape with the front edge shaped into two curves. The wooden base has three slots for holding the weights. There are six brass weights with this item. These scales come from the Nullawarre Post Office and would have been used there for most of the 20th century. Nullawarre is a small settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool. The first Nullawarre school was opened in 1878 and the Nullawarre Post Office operates today in the Nullawarre General Store. These scales are of interest as a memento of the type of weighing scales used in Post Offices in Victoria in the early to mid 20th century. Bells of this type were normally used to hang around the necks of cows, horses or bullocks to prevent them from being lost and were used from around the 1860's onwards. The initial J B identify the bell as being made by James Barwell who made bells for the Australian market from around the 1860's. His bell and brass foundry manufactured all sorts of bells from school bells to full church peals as well as plumbing fittings. The four marks on the edge of the bell are typical of those used by drovers or owners to identify their animal. While this bell has no known local provenance, it is a link to the early cattle and agricultural life in Australia and most likely the Western District. Its significance lies in the fact that it is typical of bells used for a purpose at that time and as such can be used for discussion in a social and interpretive context.This is a brass bell of the type used to hang around the necks of animals such as cows, horses and bullocks. The mechanism for the attachment to a collar or harness has been sheared off and the clapper is detached from the inside hook. The bell has an inscription incised around the top and there are four small cuts or incisions made into the bell at the wider end. This is a car picnic set made by the English firm of G. W. Scott and Sons who were producers of wickerwork crafts, basketry and luxury leather goods. The business was founded in 1661 and ceased operations in 1967. The picnic set belonged to Dr Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959) who was born and educated in Tasmania and completed a medical degree at Melbourne University. He commenced a practice in Warrnambool in 1906 and was the Honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’ at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. This picnic set is of considerable significance because: 1. It is a good example of the luxury picnic sets owned by more affluent people in the 1930s and 40s. 2. It has important local provenance as it belonged to Horace Holmes, a doctor associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a rectangular wooden box with a leather covering. It has metal hinges on the corners of the box and two two metal catches on the side with a leather belt and metal buckle on one of these catches with one leather belt missing on the other side. These leather straps were to attach the picnic box to the running board of the car. There are also two metal catches or locks on the front of the box. Inside the box there is a white lining with a plaited wickerwork insert containing spaces for the following: 1. large china container with a silver top 2. smaller metal container with a silver lid 3. small rectangular metal tin with a silver lid. This trophy was given in 1872 by Richard Lane to the Villiers & Heytesbury Agricultural Association for the best four horses in waggon. The Villiers & Heytesbury Association was founded in 1854 with the first show held at Warrnambool in 1855. It still operates today as the Warrnambool Agricultural Society. Richard Lane owned and operated the Commercial Hotel ( now the Whalers Hotel) in Warrnambool in the 1870s and 80s. In 1872 Richard Lane was the chief figure in staging the first Warrnambool Winter steeple chase meeting that included the now famous Grand Annual Steeple Chase. He was a generous donor of trophies to the Warrrnambool races and the Warrnambool show. It appears that no one was awarded the trophy in 1872.This trophy is of considerable importance as it is connected to the prominent 19th Century Warrnambool hotel keeper and racing identity Richard Lane and to the early history of the Villiers & Heytesbury AssociationThis is a silver cup on a silver stand mounted on a wooden base. The cup and the silver stand are much ornamented with the stand representing a tree with the branches attached to the stem and projecting out. These were contained within the ledger referred to above. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter for a decade, erecting many buildings in the Warrnambool area, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a shop in Timor Street, Warrnambool selling groceries, glassware and china. In 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Wangoom, Cudgee, Nullawarre, West Warrnambool and South Warrnambool. When William died his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split in two with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling produce, hardware and seeds. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This ledger and the accompanying paper material are of considerable importance as they are associated with the Swinton businesses in Warrnambool. The ledger contains lists of customers of the Swinton business in the 1930s and 40s and provides names, addresses and the cost of the product sold. This is very useful to researchers. The current Swinton business in Timor Street is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the Swinton name associated with businesses in Timor Street for 152 years, is among the oldest family businesses in Australia..1 This is a hard cover ledger. It is beige-coloured with red leather edging on the corners and a red and gold label on the front cover. The pages are held in the folder with metal studs. The pages are white with red and blue printed lines and red leather tabs numbering 1 to 9. The entries are handwritten in blue and black ink. This ceremonial regalia belonged to Captain Charles Rogers of the Australian Army (Light Horse Regiment). He wore this regalia when he was part of the mounted Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s Centenary celebrations and the Duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Charles Rogers was a well-known Warrnambool identity in the 1930s, 40s and 50s as a horseman and Army identity and he and his horse frequently led parades and celebrations in the city. He was a long-serving Warrnambool Agricultural Show official as a judge of equine events. Rogers died in 1961. These items are of great interest as examples of the regalia worn by Australian military personnel in the 1930s. They are also good mementos of Charles Rogers, a notable personality in Warrnambool in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.1 This is a piece of ceremonial regalia worn over the shoulder and called an aigullette. It has a plaited silver-coloured cord ending in silver metal tagged points. The metal points or stakes are highly decorated. The cords also have an accompanying smaller silver-coloured cord and another attachment of cord with an end of interwoven material in the shape of an elongated pear or acorn. The item is a little tarnished. .2 These are epaulettes worn on the shoulder. One is attached to the aigullette and the other is detached. This grain scale tester was used to work out the percentage weight of a sack of grain after the grain husk, dust and dirt were removed, thereby allowing for the calculation of the true value of the sack. The parts were attached to the box via the screw on top of the box and the cleaned grain went into the funnel to measure a fixed grain amount, before being released from the bottom of the funnel into the barrel which was then hung on the end of the scale. The weight was then slid down the graduated ruler until the scale balanced. Grain scale testers would have been used in farming in the Western District in the past and similar objects may still be in use. This grain scale tester is retained as a good example of an agricultural item from the past.This is a grain tester scale in a wooden box. .1 The wooden box has two metal hinges and wooden inserts inside with blue felt on the tops of the inserts. These are cards awarded as prizes in Flower Shows in Warrnambool in the 1940s to the Misses Ardlie. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and her sister Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of the Warrnambool law clerk Arthur Ardlie and his wife Ethel, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife, Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, early Warrnambool settlers. The cards were mostly awarded to Agnes Ardlie for prize flowers and pot plants and come from the Warrnambool Agricultural Society Annual Show, St. John’s Warrnambool Presbyterian Church Flower Show and St. Joseph’s Warrnambool Catholic Church Fete and Flower Show.These cards are of minor interest as mementoes of Agnes and Dorothy Ardlie, members of a prominent Warrnambool family in the 20th century. These are lightweight cardboard cards, rectangular in shape. They all have printing in various colours and handwriting in ink or pencil. This medal was made by Stokes and Martin. Thomas Stokes established a medal-making business in Melbourne in 1856 and from 1867 to 1893 he had a partner, George Frederick Martin. In 1962 the Stokes business became a public company and operates today in Melbourne. The medal was awarded at the Annual Show of the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association in 1877. One of the earliest agricultural associations in Victoria, the V.& H.A.A., the forerunner of the Warrnambool Agricultural Society, was established in 1854 and the first Warrnambool Show was held in 1855 at the first Royal Archer Hotel in Koroit Street. The Warrnambool Agricultural Show is still held annually. The medal, first prize for the best horse hay rake, was awarded in 1877 to the brothers, Thomas and William Rutledge, sons of Eliza and William Rutledge. The latter was a pioneer settler who came to the Warrnambool/Port Fairy district as the purchaser of the Special Survey, Farnham Park in 1841. His land stretched from Tower Hill to Dennington. William Rutledge Senior was a pioneer breeder of a Lincoln sheep stud, the owner of a mercantile business in Port Fairy, a member of the Legislative Council of Victoria and the pioneer developer of farming land around Tower Hill. His son Thomas (1846-1918) was a Warrnambool Shire Councillor who farmed in the Farnham Survey, living at Werronggurt . He went to the Geelong area at the end of the 19th century. His brother William (1849-1935) also farmed in the Farnham Survey, living at Farnham Park, He later lived at Airlie in Henna Street, Warrnambool and Sherwood on the Hopkins River and had land in the Otway Ranges. He later went to New Zealand.This medal is of considerable significance because of its age and its association with Thomas and William Rutledge and with the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association.This is a bronze medal with an image of agricultural implements, agricultural produce and farm animals on one side and etched printing on the other side. There is also printing around the edge of the medal. The medal has a small hole at the top for attaching the medal to a cord. George Eddington arrived in Australia in 1839 and named and established property in 1841 calling the property Ballangeich after a Pass near his home town of Stirling in Scotland. It is situated 151 miles west of Melbourne and to the south of Mortlake and was originally part of the Mortlake shire, which was proclaimed 26th Jan 1864. Nearest streams are the Hopkins Riverand Lyall and Drysdale creek running through good agricultural land. This map relates to the breaking up of large runs which the Victorian government enabled through selection acts of the 1860's. The previously larger runs which were mainly cattle and sheep based were now more open to closer settlement and a greater variety in farming.The lots range in size from approximately 50 acres to around 600 acres.Some areas are set aside for reserves. By 1886 the population of Ballangeich had grown to around 600 with an hotel, three state schools and a church.Tri weekly coaches ran to Colac, Warrnambool and Camperdown providing access to supplies mail and communication. This splendid medal was awarded by the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association in 1879. This association held its first show in Port Fairy in 1854 and in Warrnambool in 1855. It continues to this day under the name of the Warrnambool and District Agricultural Society. The medal was awarded to James Astley Bromfield, am early Warrnambool chemist who arrived in Victoria in 1852 and is significant in Warrnambool’s history. He produced the 1856 map of the Warrnambool district with the first landowners, a seminal resource for historians and was prominent in community affairs, especially in horse racing. He was also a Warrnambool and Shire Councillor. The medal was awarded for the best blood yearling of 1879 and this was Fright, one of the progeny of the famous stud horse Panic (second in the Melbourne Cup, 1865), His progeny won many hurdle races and flat races including the Melbourne Cup. The medal features also the names of two donors of prizes to James Bromfield, Henry Phillips and Francis Tozer, both pioneer men in Warrnambool’s horse racing history. Henry Phillips was the first President of the Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club and had the horse Panic standing at his 1000 acre stud, Bryan O’Lynn, at Purnim in the Western District. Francis Tozer was an owner, breeder and steward in racing circles and in the 1870s had the 2000 acre stud farm, Wangoom Park, at Wangoom, near Warrnambool.This is a most significant item as it was awarded to James Astley Bromfield, an early Warrnambool chemist and a person concerned with the history of the early settlement of Warrnambool and one prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool in the 19th century. The item also has connections with the famous stud horse, Panic and two other noted personalities of Warrnambool and district, Francis Tozer and Henry Phillips. The item also is of intrinsic monetary value as a 19th century medal from the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association. This is a round silver medal. It has etched printing on one side and raised images of farm animals and farm implements on the other side. It also has etched printing around the edge of the medal. This telephone directory of 1969 has entries from the Camperdown, Casterton, Colac, Edenhope, Hamilton, Portland and Warrnambool districts. The directory came from the Nullawarre Post Office at the time when Charles Williams was the Post Master (mid 20th century) and delivered two runs of mail a day. His wife, Vida was the Post Mistress. Nullawarre is a small agricultural settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool and today has a general store, Post Office and school. This telephone directory, which has local provenance (Nullawarre Post Office), will be of great use to researchers as it contains the names and addresses of private individuals and businesses in the Western District of Victoria in 1969. It is also of interest as many of the entries give the names of the country properties at that time and the entries are listed separately under the names of the various towns. This is a soft-cover booklet of 392 pages. The front cover is multi-coloured and has a photograph of a parrot and the back cover has an advertisement in blue and white. This ledger came from the Nullawarre Post Office and was in use from 1967 to 1970. Nullawarre is a small settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool. European settlers first came to the Nullawarre district in the late 1860s and the area is largely agricultural.
