A menu card for a dinner given to farewell Legacy President Philip Potts as he left to be part of the Scottish delegation in March 1928. Legatee Potts was the current Legacy President and this promotion meant he had to step down and Legatee CH Peters took over the rest of the 1927-8 tenure. The text of menu has joking references to other Legatees which shows their comradeship and camaraderie. An album of significant events in March 1928 was compiled and presented to Legatee Potts by Legatee Frank Doolan. (see 02134). Two legatees with James Tierney and his Corps of Commissionaires service medal. The notes on the back infer that Legatees were involved in the commemoration of James Tierney's life by arranging his burial at sea. An article in The Age 6 Jan 1953 mentions that Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927. He also became one of the two Commissionaires at the Shrine of Remembrance for 12 years up to 1953. The service medal he is receiving in the photo comes from the Corps of Commissionaires Association (Australia), which has information at http://www.thecorps.com.au. A summary: "The Corps of Commissionaires was founded in London 1859 by Sir Edward Walter KCB. The original aim was to provide to employment and welfare support for veterans of the Crimean War. The Corps of Commissionaires was established in Australia in New South Wales in 1939 and became based in Victoria in 1946. There are Corps members in all states in Australia from all three Australian military services. Our members range from World War 2 veterans through all conflicts to Timor and Peacekeepers. The Corps is currently an ex-service, welfare and philanthropic organisation that is located at the Veterans Centre in the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, Victoria." He was a Junior Legatee before the war, and Legacy found him a job in the office of an Adelaide Shipping Company. After the war he became a Master Mariner, Sea Pilot. He was proposed as a Legatee by Stan Savige. Legatee Donald J. Simonson (Captain) – born 21.5.1920, inducted 27 July 1953, died 11.7.2010. Served in WWII in 39th Battn., Decorated with M.C. Worked as an Importer and Manufacturers Agent after the war. President of Melbourne Legacy 1970. Legatee Adrian Beattie (Captain) – born 21.3.1920, inducted 10.10.1950, died 8.8.1989. Served as a Signal Officer in 24th Btn. This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material appealing to ex-servicemen to join Legacy. It is possibly from the 1990's as it was in a folder with marketing material from that time. The brochure mentions 114,000 widows and 3,000 children enrolled Australia wide. It is a brief outline of Legacy and asks for more volunteers from ex-servicemen that have served overseas to join Legacy. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Examples are Sir Weary Dunlop (1992), Clive James (1993), the Scott family (1994), The Emmanuel brothers (1995), Daryl Somers (1996 and 1997), and Patsy Adam Smith (1994?). A church service for Legacy widows at St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The church used for the service varies, this is believed to be St Paul's. The service is followed by a pilgrimage to the Shrine for a service and also a social gathering of a lunch together. The photos show Legatee Graham Riches holding the Legacy flag as part of the procession into the church. There was a program to send young legatees on trips on the Alma Doepel sailing ship through the 1980s and 90s. The articles from the Answer show timetables and criteria for nomination of junior legatees to be selected on the trips. One of these articles mentions the war service of the Alma Doepel - the only ship with served in World War II that was still active in 1995. These photos were in a folio of photos from 1988 to 1990. They were taken by Peter from Keesing Photographers before the journey started on 27 November 1988. Other photos from the same trip are at 01530 and taken by a Legatee. The letter was with the photos but is from a different voyage and is dated 30 December 1996. A Junior Legatee, Kim Anderson, wrote to Legacy thanking them for the opportunity to be on a 9 day voyage on the Alma Doepel. She mentions: "I learnt not only .. how to sail .. but also about teamwork, responsibility, friendship and respect." Also: "As one of the older children who attend these activities I feel I can now appreciate the thought and organisation that goes into these days and camps much more." The photo shows Legatees Pat Hanna (left) and Frank Doolan (right) with a wreath at a war memorial on Anzac Day in 1936. The wreath was an interesting design with a torch to resemble the Legacy logo. From the pencil note on the reverse it was thought it might be the cenotaph in Whitehall, London. Pat Hanna lived in London for a number of years. It might also be the cenotaph that was in Spring St, near Parliament house, until the Shrine of Remembrance was dedicated in 1937. (see photo at 01371). The two were very similar in design as the Victorian one was a half size replica of the London one. Pat Hanna (born George Patrick Hanna; 18 March 1888 in Whitianga, New Zealand) was a New Zealand-born film producer ; he was a soldier of the First World War who entertained postwar audiences with the stage show 'Diggers', that was adapted to a film of the same title in 1931.An early Anzac day ceremony with a Legacy laying a wreath. A photo of Legatee Doc Sargeant with a stethoscope looking at a junior legatee in 1954. The girl's badge says her name is Robyn Leggo. Melbourne Legacy began proving medical and dental care for junior legatees in the 1930s. At first Legatees who were professional doctors and dentists provided care free of charge. When size of the demand was realised Melbourne Legacy opened a dental clinic. For many years the dental clinic was run out of Legacy House in Swanston St. The photo appeared in the July 1954 edition of the Legacy Newsletter with the caption "Legatee Doc Sargeant examines a Junior." The accompanying article say that girls joining Legacy are given a medical examination free of charge. A doctor is in attendance on Friday nights when the girls have classes and he may be consulted whenever necessary. Legacy has as it's disposal a large number of specialists . A letter dated 9 May 1963 from Legatee Desmond Breheny to Legatee Brian Armstrong to return material he borrowed about the life of Stan Savige. It probably included a copy of Legatee Armstrong's memorial oration he gave about Savige at the 1954 Legacy Conference in Canberra. The oration is a full account of Savige's life, his war service and his role in Legacy. Legatee Armstrong was a good friend of Savige. The moving address described General Savige's life and service career, and how he formed Legacy in 1923 at the suggestion of his former Commander, Major General Sir John Gellibrand. There are copies of the oration in the archive. This letter says 'Thank you for the use of your notes re Stan Savige which are returned enclosed. With these and Russell's book the task was much easier but I fear the results not as good as either! This book is a record, made in honour of deceased Legatees, who have given service to the cause of Legacy. This is labeled Book 3. There are two similar books on display at Legacy House Melbourne.This is a record of Legatees who have given up their spare time to assist the families of deceased service personnel.Black hardcover book, white pages with floral border. Back cover has some scuff marks at the top. Inside front and back cover is decorated with a coloured pattern.Front cover, title and Legacy logo embossed in gold, thin indented rectangular border. Photograph of a group of Legatees or Junior Legatees on horses on a polo field in Coldstream. Apparently Melbourne Legacy would have an annual event of a polo tournament. It is not known if it was with the junior legatees or as a social outing for the Legatees. It is possible that it is the same day out as the joyride over Melbourne from a regional airfield (at 01016) if the airfield was in the Yarra Valley. A photo of 2 legatees (the man with glasses is L/ Schofield) with a junior legatee, talking to Miss Enez Domec-Carre. It appears to be a photo of legatees checking on the progress at one of the many girls classes run by Enez. Enez was the supervisor of the girls classes held at Legacy House for many years. She organised many annual demonstrations and was held in high regard by Legacy. The library at Legacy House is named in her honour. See also a newspaper article at 00978 which outlines her achievements, a summary of her career at 00458 and 00129. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy as assistant to Mrs Gilles (wife of a Legatee) later became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. As well her work for Legacy she ran physical education, ballroom dancing and debutante preparation classes. The man in glasses is L/ Schofield and the other names and date are unknown. Operation Float was an event run by Melbourne Legacy to take Junior legatees on an outing. It could have been to naval boats such as HMAS Cerberus or to a Yacht club. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach.
