Framed and glazed photograph of cable tram set, trailer 233, at the Victoria St Terminus, c1900. Has a factory and water tank in the background. Cable tram dummy is loaded with gentlemen and there is a paper boy in front of the trailer. Print mounted onto a wooden chip board and sealed with brown tape around the edges. Two screwed frame hanging supports on either side with one run of string between them. Frame - brown and gold with a buff and black line framed around the photograph. Uniform - Martin uniform
Lieutenant Des Martin was a member of the Wodonga Troop of the pre-WWII 8th Light Horse (Indi) regiment. He volunteered for the AIF, 12/6/1940 (VX31564) and served with the 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion in Syria and New Guinea. He was discharged 11/2/1944 with the rank of lieutenant. He was a horseman of considerable repute and was the author of the book “Australia Astride”. He provided valuable assistance to the 8/13 VMR Heritage Troop when it was raised. Wearing this uniform, he rode with a group of former light horsemen leading ANZAC Day marches in Melbourne for many years.Half mannequin dress in service dress tunic with 8th Light Horse lapel badges, silver buttons, badges of rank and colour patches. 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection
Uniform - Blues uniform
This uniform was worn by Lieutenant Colonel J Allard who commanded 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles 1959-1962. Col Allard had served in the pre-WW2 militia, then in 2/4th Armoured Regiment (AIF). Following the war he joined the CMF and served as 2i/c 4/19 PWLH prior to taking command of 8/13 VMR. He maintained close contact with the Regimental Association and following his death in October 2018 at age 98 his family donated this uniform to the museum. The uniform was known as 'mess undress' but served as formal winter dress until 'mess dress' was made available in 1970s. Mannequin dressed in Blues uniform with beret and 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles badge with emu plume tuft behind badge. Tunic and badges assembled by owner to respresent a Great War Light Horse tunic from WW2 Tunic which is almost identical to the Great War tunics worn by Light Horse OR's. This tunic forms part of a mannequin essemble representing a 1st AIF 4th Light Horse soldier of the period 1916-1919 serving in Sinai, Palestine and Jordan.Tunic, OR's, 1st AIF style. This diorama is the focal point the Prisoner of War Gallery. It was originally designed and installed by a collaborative group of artists and craftsmen, all themselves former Prisoners of War in 1995. Bamboo for the display and replica prosthetics was sourced from Thailand. The mannequins are artistic interpretations of identified POW surgical staff and doctors. The original display was moved and reassembled during the Gallery redevelopment process in 2015. This gown was the winning entry in the Mannequins and Models Guild's Gown of the Year competition, held at the Chevron Hilton Hotel, Melbourne in November 1963 in aid of the Torch Bearers for Legacy. Designed by Lorna White for Hartnell of Melbourne and modelled by Marien Brindley, the dress’s construction is reputed to have consumed 300 hours, with the finished dress weighing 6 kilograms and costing around 3000 pounds. The Museum has a large collection of paintings of ocean liners of the past which is of great interest to immigrants to this country especially those who travelled by sea in the past. Of significant interest to visitors who visit our display of ocean liners paintings. Migrants from the 50s to the 70s take great pleasure in finding their ship in the display. The magazine was started in 1933 by Frank Packer as a weekly publication. The first editor was George Warnecke and the initial dummy was laid out by WEP (William Edwin Pidgeon) who went on to do many famous covers over the next 25 years. It is the most widely read magazine in the history of Australian publishing. During wartime despite printing restrictions, and it began publishing coloured photographic covers.This is an example of anAustralian women's magazine published during WW11.It gives practical advice on needlework / knitting and evidences the widespread interest in contemporary fashion. In doing so it shows what were the fashionable, but broadly affordable, women's and children's clothing styles of their day. These magazines also reflect women's interests.A 32 pp magazine, titled The Australian Women's Weekly. On the front cover is a coloured drawing of a man and a woman sitting under a tree. The woman is pouring tea from a billy into the tin cup held by the man. A tethered horse is grazing to their right and a small brown and white dog is in the foreground.
