In this respect it was the forerunner of the comprehensively planned housing estate of the post war era. This trophy, donated by Camperdown Apex Club, was awarded to members of the South Western District for Dinner Notice Excellence. The winners listed on the trophy are Gerard Ryan, Camperdown, Desi Pekin, Cobden, Dale Alexander, Camperdown, Tim Fitzpatrick, Terang, Leigh Parker, Terang, John Berger, Terang, Kevin Dwyer, Koroit, Maree Fenton, Terang, Grant Picone, Terang and Darren Williamson, Colac. The dates range from 1991 to 2002. Apex Clubs are service clubs that provide people with the opportunity to volunteer within their community. Members are aged between 18 and 45. The first Apex Club was formed in Geelong in 1931 and Warrnambool Apex Club was the fifth club formed in 1931. It went into recess in 1941 and was re-established in 1952. The club closed in 2011. This trophy is retained as it comes from the Apex Clubs of the South West District and Warrnambool Apex Club, now closed, was a member of this group. This is a wooden trophy consisting of a wooden base with a wooden plinth with two wooden columns on either side. The columns have a gold-coloured strip running along the entire length of the columns. On top of the plinth is a gold-coloured holder for a pennant or flag. The base and the plinth have gold-coloured metal name plates. All of these contain inscribed names except one. Francis James Browne died in Sydney 1963. He had a long career in obstetrics and gynaecology. Summary of appointments include: General Practice in Wales, Maternity Department of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, 1st director of obstetric unit, University College Hospital London. Retired and continued postgraduate teaching in London and NSW. Married to Grace Cuthbert, who was director of Maternal and Baby Welfare in NSW. A collection of objects found amongst Professor FJ Browne's papers were transferred from the Archives to the Museum collection in 1994.Round copper coloured badge attached by two metal links to a rectangular bar. To identify volunteers, badges were provided. These consisted of white plastic badge, with the words 'For the Blind' beneath the lighthouse logo of the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind in blue. A name plate could be slotted into the lower portion of the badge or a name label stuck to the badge. Sometimes Dymo labels were used to indicate positions such as 'Volunteer'. A separator is a centrifugal device that separates milk into cream and skimmed milk. Separation was commonly performed on farms in the past. Most farmers milked a few cows, usually by hand, and separated milk with a hand operated machine for domestic use. The milk was poured into the bowl on the top and the handle had to then be turned fast enough to get the separator up to speed adequate to separate the cream and the milk. The milk would come out of one spigot and the cream out of the other. In general practice some of the skimmed milk was consumed by the family, while the rest may have been used to feed calves and pigs. Enough cream was saved to make butter, and the excess was sold. In many cases excess could be bartered or swapped with neighbours for other items of produce. ALFA-LAVAL SEPARATORS The principal works and head office of Aktiebolaget Separator was established by Gustaf de Laval in Stockholm. The first Laval milk separator was patented in1884. In Australia three old established firms commenced pioneering the Alfa Laval cream separators in about 1885. These were A. W. Sandford & Co. Ltd., in Adelaide, J. Bartram & Son, of Melbourne, who have ever since been the Victorian agents of Aktiebolaget Separator. In New South Wales and Queensland, the pioneering firm was Waugh & Josephson Ltd. J. Bartram & Son, the distributor of the separator in this collection, established their business in Melbourne in 1881. In 1892 Bartram & Son estimated that 1,130 of these machines were operating throughout Victoria. This item is significant as it is representative of domestic and dairying machinery used throughout rural areas of Australia in the early to mid 20th century.The separator is made in 3 sections. The base is made from cast iron. The cover and vat are made from silver painted tin. There are 2 outlet spouts. The detachable handle, made from cast iron and wood, is held in place by a screw. Alec Sandner was a Strathfieldsaye Shire Councillor from 1982 -1987, Strathfieldsaye Shire President from 1985 – 86 and Mayor of COG Bendigo 2011 - 2012. These name badges would have been worn during official events, such as council meetings. Three name badges worn by Alec Sandner while serving on the Shire of Strathfieldsaye Council. Base of this dinner gong is made from a name plate off a steam engine that was found in the Northern Territory. The two ends supporting the gong are made of either anti tank of anti aircraft bullets that are soldered into salt and pepper shakers that were acquired from a Chinese 'Joss House' in the Northern Territory. The kangaroo and boomerang were copied from an Australian penny.Brass dinner gong suspended on a stainless steel kangaroo and boomerang. Trooping of the 20th Light Horse guidon through the streets of Seymour Victoria to mark a significant occasion in the towns long connection with the Regiment. A parade involving seven Ferret Scout cars was an unusual event. This photograph was displayed in the ORs Mess at the 8th/13th VMR depot Wangaratta until closure of the depot when the photo was passed to the Regimental Collection. In 1987 a farewell was held for John Wicking, former President of the AFB. The presentation of a medal "Rara Avis" (rare bird) and on the reverse 'Nil Taurus excretis' (no bull excretement) was made to the bemused honouree. Upon the front face of the plate is an image of Mr Wicking wearing a name plate 'The Guiding Light', as he climbs an 'Association for the Blind' sign to reach the guiding light at the top. On the front (rear) face of this metal firescreen is an image of the RVIB St Kilda Road building and front gardens, with the words 'Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind' in curved lettering above the building. This book was a prize given to Marion Mahood in 1935 from the Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Ballarat. Marion Mahood was a Warrnambool-born lady who spent most of her working life nursing at Prince Henry’s Hospital in Melbourne. In retirement she was active in community affairs in WarrnamboolThis book is of interest because, with the school badge embossed on the front cover, it is a good example of the type of prize awarded by private schools in Victoria in the early to mid 20th century. It also has a connection to a resident of Warrnambool, Marion Mahood.This is a dark blue leather-covered book of 796 pages. The cover has gold lettering on the spine with some gold ornamentation and the badge of Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies’ College embossed in gold on the front cover. The book has an Introduction and 54 chapters of storyline. There are several black and white illustrations scattered throughout the chapters. The book plate is printed and pasted on to the back of the front cover and handwritten material in black ink is included in the name plate. Framed portrait of Howard (Pat) M. Lightfoot (1904-1991), who was the President of the Association for the Blind in 1952-1954 and 1964-1972 respectively. It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the AFB Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. Mr Lightfoot is seated, with his hands clasped, and wears a gray jacket, grey collared shirt, green woolen vest and red tie. This book was given as a prize to Dorothy Donalson who was a pupil at the Warrnambool State School. No. 1743. This school was opened in 1876 in Jamieson Street, Warrnambool, following the 1872 Education Act bringing free, secular and compulsory education to Victoria. Several other Government- sponsored primary schools that existed in Warrnambool in the early 1870s closed when the school in Jamieson Street opened. The school still operates today. The name, ‘Dorothy Donalson’ may be a spelling mistake and may be meant to be Dorothy Donaldson who was living in Derby Street, Warrnambool at that time. Her father Cyril and his brother had a timber yard in Raglan Parade.This book is an excellent example of the type of book given as a prize to school girls in Victoria in the 1930s. The author, May Wynne was a popular and prolific writer of the time. If the book belonged to a member of the Donaldson family, then this is of interest as the Donaldson timber business was a prominent one in Warrnambool at the time. This is a hard cover book of 255 pages. The cover is grey with black lettering on the front and the spine and an image of two schoolgirls in black and grey on the front cover. The book also has a dust cover with a multi-coloured image of the same two schoolgirls on the front cover. The dust cover has been reinforced with white paper pasted on the inside of the cover. The name plate is blue-coloured and has an ornamental edging with the information handwritten in black ink. The book contains 18 chapters and has a full-page black and white illustration at the front of the book.‘S.S. The date is approximate. Tavistock was built c1890. In 1897 it was the home of the Walker family; Joyce Walker later became matron of Mosgiel Hospital. In 1902 it became the first site of Milverton Girls School. From 1930s to 1960s it was home to Miss Marjorie Vahland, a locally well-known nursing sister. The P.S Adelaide had been displayed in the Hopwood Gardens from 1960. In 1984 The City of Echuca decided to put the paddle steamer back in the river. This happened over several weeks and involved digging a boat ramp into the bank in front of the Hopwood Gardens. This involved a lot of skill and people. It also attracted a lot of attention. Crowds gathered every day to watch the task. In this photograph the P.S Pevensey in the foreground still has the name P.S Philadelphia writing on its name plate. The P.S Pevensey was used in the TV Series 'All The Rivers Run', as the P.S Philadelphia. Relates to a series of images Reg. nos. P000059.3, P000061.3, P000062.2, P000063.3, P000070.2, P000071.The re-floating of the P.S Adelaide is significant because it occurred at a time when the Tourist Industry was gathering momentum in Echuca. The City of Echuca made the decision to add another paddle steamer to its fleet to carry passengers on the Murray River. The P.S Adelaide is one of the oldest, still operative wooden hulled paddle steamers in the world. It celebrated it's 150th birthday in July 2016. Ernest Ladner worked as manager for Saltau & Sons who were produce merchants of Kepler St Warrnambool. he was a keen golfer and fisherman and were often mentioned in the social pages of the town from around 1915 through to the late 1930's. He was involved in the local Chamber of Commerce and the local branch of the ANA with his wife being president in 1928. Ernest and his wife lived at "Glencoe" a substantial property on the corner of Timor and Ryot Streets . This item was purchased at Leski's, Melbourne, Medical collection auction, 8 May 2013. The incubator was part of a rare collection of medical, dental and pharmaceutical objects belonging to a tourism business, Kryal Castle, near Ballarat, Victoria from 1974. At some point,apparently, an officer manager discarded the museum records, so the provenance of the neonatal incubator, and many other items in the Leski auction, has been lost.Neonatal incubator, "Glenleigh", made and used, late 1950s- early 1960s. The four side laminated panels as well as bottom panel are possibly made of asbestos fibreboard,. Each panel is sealed with polished aluminium strips, and has a metal handrail.The incubator is mounted on four castors made by "Shepherd USA'. On the front panel is a bakerlite dial and a bakerlite switch. The item is incomplete: the cover, probably glass, is missing. Inside the unit is an old calico infant's mattress.There are two name plates on the front panel; “Australia/ Victor Watson/Limited/ New Zealand” and "Glenleigh/ Baby Incubator/ Aeronautical & Industrial Lighting Co/ 677-9 North Road Carnegie”. Walking or driving up Main Road, you enter Eltham’s Avenue of Honour, with its rows of plane trees, each commemorating the death of a soldier sent to fight in World War 1. 115 trees were first planted on 21st September 1917 beginning at “the flat” to the intersection of Pitt Street. Tree guards and copper name plates were later added. In the ‘20s and ‘30s too many branches were broken off by carriers whipping their horses up the steep slope. In the 1950s many of the original trees were removed for road widening and new plane trees were planted in their place. In June 2015 during the Anzac Centenary, Nillumbik Shire Council dedicated the new Avenue of Honour in the Eltham Gateway. New markers commemorate local soldiers.
