Metal pea whistle, steel, nickel plated with a spring steel ring. Whistle component made from two stamped and folded pieces of steel plate with a "pea" inside. Spring steel ring held to the whistle with a pressed steel piece. Whole whistle appears to be silver soldered. On the top of the whistle, stamped into the flat plate is the words "The Acme Thunderer" and on the bottom "Made in England". Yields information about a system of tram passes that were provided to the City of Ballarat Councillors in 1960 and has a strong association with the Councillors himself.Stamped brass badge or pass for free travel on the Ballarat Tramways for the year 1906. Stamped to give the words "Ballarat Electric Trams 1906" on the outer edge of the Badge and then stamped out to give the letters 'B E T" on the inside of the badge. On the top of the badge, a hole has been provided and a steel ring fitted. On the rear of the badge has the letters "CR. D. Hughes" stamped on the top of the badge and on the bottom the manufacturer's name "Stokes" in a reverse stamp. Indicates badge issued to Councillor D. Hughes for the year 1906. A similar badge was sold on ebay for $US 49.95 December 2007 - paperwork on file. Images on file - images i3 and i4. Was issued to Councillor C. R. Brokenshire. I don't know whether passes also went to Ballarat East and Sebastopol councillors as well. In Bill Scott's "Last tram at 11" on page 41 is a 1912 poem 'The councillor's farewell to his tramway pass". The ESCo tried a few economy measures at that time. Passes for councillors were withdrawn in 1912, as were free passes for employees "owing to our financial position". Molassine was created in 1900 to exploit a secret formula for animal fed. The formula had been brought to Britain by Arthur Stein ‘a mid European probably hailing from one of the Balkan States’. At first the feed was made up by Henry Tate but in 1908 they began work in Greenwich. The molasses was bought locally from Silvertown and Plaistow refineries and the company built the first steel tanks for molasses bought from Danks, Steam Boiler Manufacturers, between 1910-1914. Their main product was a molasses based feed for horses - this consisted of sphagnum moss mixed with both beet and cane molasses and a ‘soupcon of maganesium calcum carbonate’. Twenty six piece cutlery set. Cutlery is stored in a blue box with marbled pattern with fabric hinges. There are two gold coloured clasps to close the box. A silver coloured metal plate is attached to the top of the box with an engraved inscription. Presented to Mr & Mrs J Qualtrough by MOLOGA FRIENDS 9.9.33 Also STG.SII The Cutlery set was given to Henry Thomas and Elsie Qualtrough when they left Mologa in 1933 to return to Bendigo. The tray of the box is lined with blue satin. There is a central black velvet covered frame with indentations for six dessert spoons, four teaspoons and two tablespoons. All nickel plated on both sides, engraved as to the tramway used on, date of production on the head of the rail, Designing Engineers on the web and the manufacturer on the foot of the rail. Cloth secured with staples and drawing pins on the rear. It was a smoking accessory that was widely known worldwide and made popular in Australia by returning veterans. This vintage food press may have been used for pressed tongue and other foods. A small vintage round clip on lidded aluminium food press possibly used for pressed tongue. The clip has the manufacturer's name on it with the Patent No. The clip on the lid has a strong thick steel bar threaded through it which is screwed tight to press the food within. In 1870 John became a member of the Melbourne Council and served as mayor in 1873/74. The Australian Chain Manuacturing Company Pty. Ltd. A light cardboard cover in a green/brown colour. Nine paper pages with lists of costs and illustrations of types of chain. It has two metal staples in the spine. There is an ink stamp on the front cover with a sole agent of Gollin &Company 561/8 Bourke st Melbourne. Alfred Wayne & Co. produced a number of braille writers over the years, including The Visible. Alfred Wayne (1854-1926) was listed as a 'manufacturer of small novelties in metal and steel' in the 1901, however by the 1911 census he had turned his company into a 'manufacturer of apparatus for use of the blind'. Together with Henry Stainsbury, they produced a number of braille typewriters as well as the more well know crab design of the Stainsby-Wayne brailler.Cast iron Brailler. The body of the Braille writer is painted in black with silver and gold painted inscriptions. Seven metal oval keys are situated at the front of the machine. These boots were manufactured by Oliver Stevens in Ballarat to the Forests Commission's own specification. Safety boots were a bit "hit and miss" back in 1981. As well as the steel toe caps these boots had a screwed, glued and stitched Sherpa-pattern rubber nitrile sole. The sole was oil resistant and didn't melt on hot coals. The yellow heels signified safety boots. There were two styles with different leather and staff were all personally fitted and given their choice of style. The only thing that has fundamentally changed over 40 years is there is much more choice and comfort in boots today. These boots proved to be the catalyst for boot manufacturers realising there was a market outside of the armed forces not being served. Ankle injuries along with elastic sided boots were virtually eliminated by these boots. The iconic Tasmanian company, Blundstone, had a work boot called "Forester" at the time. It had won an Australian Design Award and had a bonded Sherpa sole. Unfortunately, the soles tended to separate from the boot under field test conditions. Eventually they perfected the process Oliver Stevens' main issue was not being able to recruit enough workers to meet the increased demand.
