Large barn built c1886 by Isaac Jeeves the younger on his property where the homestead 'Shiloah' stood. The barn was reputedly made from timbers split from only one messmate tree. Originally the home of Isaac Jeeves, brother of Ellis Jeeves, ‘Shiloah’ was enlarged to take guests in the early 1900s. It was situated close to a beautiful fern gully and Isaac and his family capitalised on this by setting out walking tracks through the ferns. They charged 1/- to walk through and this included afternoon tea in a garden setting. ‘Shiloah’ was a popular tourist attraction but the making of the Olinda Creek Road destroyed the fern gullies and, by the 1930s, it was all finished. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph showing a large wooden structure surrounded by trees. This spoon rest is a souvenir item for tourists to purchase. It is a souvenir of the presence of Southern Right whales at Logans Beach, a few kilometres from Warrnambool’s Central Business District. Each year Southern Right whales have been migrating from sub-Antarctic waters to the east coast of Australia during the winter months. Some whales have been coming each year from approximately May to October (since the 1980s) to have their calves at Logans Beach near Warrnambool. This area is now known as Warrnambool’s Southern Right Nursery. The whales calve about every three years and stay in the local waters along with other whales for about three months and over the past thirty years or so over 100 calves have been born at Logans Beach. The whales are now a winter tourist attraction (if an unpredictable one) as they can be viewed from a raised purpose-built platform area and they are often very close to the shore.This spoon rest is of interest as it is a souvenir of the Southern Right Whale Nursery at Logans Beach, Warrnambool and it has a practical use in the kitchen. These booklets were issued in 1944 to 1948 by the Warrnambool Progress and Tourist Association(established in 1927). Warrnambool was the winner of the Sun News Pictorial Quest in 1928, the ‘Ideal City’ and used this title to promote the city. There had been several Tourist Associations in Warrnambool prior to 1927 and all of them promoted Warrnambool as a health resort and an ideal holiday destination with the Sea Baths in Gilles Street and the beach close by. These guides were produced during and immediately post World War Two with rationing of petrol and other goods and most people in Victoria would not have been contemplating long and expensive holidays so Warrnambool with its rail service and beach facilities would have been seen as a possible holiday destination. The booklets contain information on the tourist attractions of Warrnambool and district, black and white photographs of buildings, events and scenic spots and advertisements for local businesses. Many of the advertisements also contain photographs of business premises.These booklets are of interest as they contain photographs of Warrnambool in the mid to late 1940's and advertisements for many business operating at that time.[.1] 56 page booklet. This booklet has been produced as a handbook for the employees of the Warrnambool-based clothing business of Fletcher Jones and Staff. Sir David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) was born in Bendigo and served with the A.I.F. in World War One. He and an ex-war mate began trading in the Western District as itinerant hawkers of manchester and later Fletcher Jones continued on his own, gradually expanding the business until, in 1922, he opened a menswear and tailoring business in Warrnambool. By 1941 he was making nothing but men’s trousers, supplying retailers in over 100 outlets. In the late 1940s he turned his business into a Co-Operative and later expanded the business to include both men’s and women’s clothing. He opened a factory in Warrnambool, which, with it beautiful gardens, became a tourist attraction. The factory site was called Pleasant Hill. When he died in 1977 his business was one of the largest clothing manufacturers in Australia and possibly the world but, with the competition from imported clothing, the enterprise did not survive into the 21st century. It is presumed that Doug Ferguson was an employee of Fletcher Jones and that the gold label award was for his work or that of his department. This staff handbook for employees of the clothing business of Fletcher Jones & Staff is of major interest as this business, known nationally, was one of the most significant businesses ever to operate in Warrnambool. The handbook is of interest in itself as it has the Fletcher Jones logo, interesting material about the business philosophy of the business and Fletcher Jones himself, an autographed photograph of him and some significant photographs of the business, including indoor photographs of the factory.This is a soft cover book of 14 pages. It has a blue cover with the red and gold badge of Fletcher Jones on the front cover. The first page has handwritten material in black ink and a photograph of Fletcher Jones. It commands a magnificent 360 degree panorama from Kinglake across the Diamond Valley to Macedon and the You Yangs. It is built on a peak which was once a volcano, 237 metres above sea level. After World War one a memorial cairn was erected on the site, and in 1925 a committee of public-minded citizens began to plan for a tower. Many generous donations of material and money were forthcoming so that in 1926 the Governor General Lord Stonehaven was able to unveil the plaque before a crowd of 500 people. There was some concern in the 1960s when the Forests Commission wanted to build a firespotters cabin on the top. At first R.S.L. branches opposed the idea, but it was realised that this use could combine with its use as a tourist attraction, and would ensure its maintenance for the future, Today the Kangaroo Ground tower provides one of the best views around Melbourne and is a fitting memorial to those who died in two world wars. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) was a travelling hawker who opened a business in Liebig Street, Warrnambool in 1924. In 1931 he opened The Man's Shop at the corner of Liebig Street and Koroit Street. He sold suits and overcoats tailored in the work rooms upstairs. In 1948 his factory known as Pleasant Hill was opened in Flaxman Street in Warrnambool, the site of an old quarry. In 1951 the company Fletcher Jones and Staff was formed with the staff owning 51% of the shares, By the 1970s Fletcher Jones and Staff had become one of the largest clothing companies in Australia with 55 shops and 3000 employees. In 1992 the Warrnambool City Council bought the factory and gardens with the site now a tourist attraction. Although the name is retained today for trading purposes the original Fletcher Jones company has been dissolved. The screen is a representation of the Fletcher Jones factory post 1967. It a wool tapestry by Martin Prider who was a painter and caretaker what the Fletcher Jones factory. He lived in one of the Fletcher Jones cottages on site. (Robin Boyd Age Small Homes Scheme, today Heritage listed.)This is an interesting memento of the Fletcher Jones company and the factory. It was done by a local resident and features the famous Fletcher Jones gardensTapestry fire screen in a rectangular light timber frame depicting the Fletcher Jones Factory Gardens. Commercially-operated boat tours on the Maribyrnong and Yarra Rivers in Melbourne were a major tourist attraction, especially in the first half of the twentieth century. A number of companies ran ferries and motor-launches to locations such as the Riverview Tea Gardens (1909-1947) at Ascot Vale, and the Hawthorn Tea Gardens on the corner of Power Street and Riversdale Road. One of the families which ran these services was Hicks Bros, which from circa 1921 operated a ferry service from Princess Walk (Melbourne) to Studley Park. This is one of a series of 17 black and white undated photographic proofs donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2013 by the Queenscliffe Historical Museum. The series includes images of individuals, tea rooms, ferries, motor launches, ocean liners and tugs. In 1953, the owner of Hicks Bros was involved in an inquest into the drowning of a Ukrainian tourist on a ferry operated by Melbourne Ferries, a rival firm. In published reports of the inquest, reference is made to a number of photographs taken by Robert Irvine Atchison, part-owner of Hicks Bros. As the reverse of the photographs indicates copyright is held by the State of Victoria, the collection may have derived from that year.Black and white print of a tourist cruiser berthed on the River Yarra at Princess Bridge.
