The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press". These documents came from the office of Rolf Crawley who was an engineer, surveyor and architect in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. His grandfather, father and uncle were also engineers, working in that capacity for the Shire of Warrnambool or as Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. The documents came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the Crawley surveying business in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the documents, along with other Crawley memorabilia, from the Michael Hand Estate. These documents will be useful for reference and research, particularly in regard to the Shire of Warrnambool history.This is a packet of documents from the office of Rolf Crawley. They are mostly single sheets which include letters from the Office of the Surveyors Board, documents relating to employees and trainees and some Government papers. These goggles belonged to RAAF Pilot Francis Robertson who crash landed his trainee solo flight tiger moth into Nurse Carters home at Chiltern in 1943. Pilot Officer Robertson then went on to serve in New Guinea whilst flying Tiger Moths and Wirraways. WW2 significance with Francis Robertson having served in the New Guinea Campaign, flying Tiger Moths and Wirraways. Francis Robertson was also the trainee pilot who crashed his plane into Nurse Carter's residence at Chiltern in 1943. Leather and perspex flying goggles belonging to RAAF Pilot Francis Robertson WW1. The buckle was awarded to nurses after successful passing of their first year examination ("first professional") and was a prized object. When the buckle was withdrawn in 1972 with the introduction of a new style of trainee nurses uniform without belt and buckle nurses protested at the change. Mrs Hallenstein's Granddaughter Jane Helena Walters nee Shannon trainee of Alfred Hospital 1948-1951 presented the box to the nursing achieves with a hand written letter of explanation on 28/04/2011. Paper card insert is signed by Louisa Mann who was matron from 1912-1928.Item is significant as it was presented from Louisa Mann. Item also carries the Maltese cross from the Alfred hospital insignia. Has been presented to the archive from Alfred Hospital trainee. Handcrafted wooden box with parquetry Maltese cross in center. Fourteen Miniature Models of Nurses from Primitive Era to 1980's. They were Dean Nancy Long's idea and she had them made. They were used for "Careers" information when visiting High Schools. In 1972 when the uniforms changed from traditional to more modern trend they created interest for prospective trainee nurses. The story begins with Kathleens training, but most information is about Francis and James. James was a male nurse who completed his training at Lister House, but the males were accommodated away from the female trainees. Francis went on to do midwifery and later psychiatric nursing and Janes worked in Private Investigation. Resusci Anne was used for teaching both emergency workers and members of the general public. Developed by Asmund S. Laerdal, Peter Safar, and James Elam and produced by the company Laerdal Medical.The first version of rescue Annie was presented by Laerdal in 1960. Later the design was refined and included a simulated carotid pulse, eye pupils that could dilate and constrict and a system for recording the trainee's resuscitation performance on a paper tape.
