Sign - Warning Sign - Children's carriages, "Children's Carriages .....", c1920
One of a group of signs that were fitted into tramcars in Ballarat, giving instructions to passengers about prams, behaviour, smoking, fare payment, talking to the motorman, instructions or information to drivers etc. Yields information about the sign manufacture, demonstrates the type of signs provided in tramcars.Set of four Enamel signs, black capital letters and lines on white background, titled "Children's Carriages which fold compactly may be permitted on cars at conductors discretion and owner's risk". One of a number similar signs donated to the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society by the SEC following closure of the Ballarat Tramways system in 1971. Sign has a black enamel backing, with marks from the enamelling process. Yields information about the use of the trams on the Sebastopol line and their use by school children.Bromide of a black and white photograph of Ballarat trams 41 and 42 crossing at the Grey St. Loop, Albert St. Sebastopol, c1970. School children are boarding No. 41, which is inbound with the destination of Lydiard St. North. No. 42 is southbound, or outbound with a destination of Sebastopol. Richard Gilbert photo. Bromide made c1994 for possible publication, but not used, though may have been used in another publication. Print of the actual photograph added 27/1/2019 - see image i1. Richards notes that came with the photograph "Near the end of school term, students use the trams for the last few days of the closing school term. When the next terms commenced, the trams had been replaced". See image i2. Photograph has a sticker on the rear with "9" written on it and "Both these cars were transferred to Ballarat in 1956 from Geelong after that system closed. Two page Gestetner printed list, foolscap sheets titled "MMTB Route Numbers - Tram Routes", giving the list of route numbers for all numbers to 99 including A to E, showing where numbers and most letters not used at the time. Does not give bus route numbers. Used up to the renumbering of Oct. 1970. For the route listing that replaced this list see Record Number 360. Black and white photograph of MMTB No. 58 in Wellington St. St Kilda, about to enter St Kilda Junction and continue to St Kilda beach via Fitzroy St St Kilda, late 1925 or early 1926 - Wellington St electric line opened 27/12/1925. Note the sign on the left hand pole about travel to Malvern and St Kilda Beach, the workmen and that another tram has left heading outwards. On the right hand side is part of a sign advising people to catch cars to the Esplanade. Photo from the Collection of the Department of Infrastructure now with the Public Records Office - image number H102. Note: this photo is now out of copyright and was not an original VR photograph, but one copied from another source and collected as their Heritage series. Original features photos of Ballarat City and Town, its buildings, parks and the various industries and organisations that were in Ballarat at the time of publication, including ESCo. Many photos features ESCo trams. Photos sepia toned. Has some red colour block printing on the front cover and rear, for Star Oil Engines. On inside back cover is a map with the places of interest and tram route map, marked in red. Pages are un-numbered. Original published by Ballarat East Town Council and Ballaarat City Council. On cover has number stamped in black in, "No. 87" (assume facsimile copy No.). Photos with publication show tram No. 21, built 1913 and ESCo photo page shows Mr. Pringle as Manager. Mr Pringle became manager in January 1911, As there is no photos of the "Avenue of Honour", or other mention of the first world war, assume original published about 1913 or 1914. Demonstrates how the SEC used enamel signs to convey instructions to passengers or to confirm the advice of the conductor and how enamel signs were made.Enamel sign, black capital letters and lines on an off-white background, titled "Entering or leaving this tram on the wrong side is prohibited". Marks on rear from the enamelling process. The front of the sign has been covered with varnish. See also Reg Item 7118 for a later sign.
