This is a set of 12 photographs of contractors constructing Lithographic Squadron’s new Printing Building at Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1989. The building was purpose built to house a new computer-controlled Heidelberg Speedmaster five colour lithographic offset Printing Press. The print room was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. Wayzgoose Hall and the Speedmaster Press printing capability was commissioned by the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on Wednesday 27th June 1990. This is a set of 12 photographs of contractors removing a vehicle from the lake at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo in September 1986. The Ford XB panel van belonging to WO2 Ted Burgess rolled down the embankment during the night from the SGTs Mess carpark. Despite written off by the insurance company, the panel van was remarkably restored by Ted to roadworthy condition and driven in to Fortuna with a shark’s fin mounted on its roof. This badge is believed to be part of a uniform of an officer of the Salvation Army. It could be either a collar or a hat badge. The Salvation Army, a Christian organization, came to Warrnambool in 1887 with the arrival of Captain and Mrs John Moyle and Lieutenant William Sanderson. Their first place of worship was a Raglan Parade grain store. Today the Warrnambool Salvation Army citadel and associated buildings are in Koroit Street.This badge is of interest as an early example of the badges worn by Salvation Army personnel in Warrnambool. This is a metal badge,( possibly silver), in the shape of a shield with an inner circle with a red background and images of a cross, the letter ‘S’ and two crossed swords. This inner circle is surrounded by a circular blue rim with gold lettering and outside this circle is a jagged rim with sixteen points. On top of the centre circles is a crown with some red colouring. The metal clip at the back of the badge is missing. The badge is somewhat tarnished. The back of the badge has three hallmarks. These eight photographs of Army Survey Regiment personnel with the Inter-Service Sailing Trophy were taken on the bank of Fortuna’s Lake at Bendigo circa 1980. Army Survey Regiment’s personnel were encouraged to participate in Inter-Area, Inter-Service and Combined-Service sporting competitions held annually. This is a set of 14 photographs taken at the Warrant Officer and Sergeant’s Mess Summer Ball held at the Army Survey Regiment (ASR), Fortuna Villa circa 1990. Photos of personnel and their guests was taken during the dinner and social mingling outside the SGT’s Mess. The Ball and Dinner was held in the gardens of Fortuna Villa and in temporary 20’ x 30’ Army tents set up on the roadway in front of the transport compound. This is a set of seven photographs of Army Survey Regiment personnel undertaking live fire SLR rifle qualification training at Wellsford Rifle Range, Bendigo 1985. This was the last of six regimental training objectives outlined in the administrative instruction – Exercise “City Soldier” accompanying these photos. The other objectives were SLR rifle and M30 grenade handling revision, and first aid at Fortuna; and navigation and RATEL at Wellsford Forest. Personnel from Air Survey, Cartographic, Lithographic and Headquarters Squadrons were reallocated to four training platoons for one week from 7th to 11th October 1985. These two photographs were taken circa 1970s at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Photo .1P was taken in 1971 when the then Justice John Kerr (later Sir John Kerr AK, GCMG, GCVO, QC) visited the Regiment. At that time, he was the Chairman of the Committee of Enquiry into Service Pay and Conditions. Personnel from Lithographic Squadron had submitted a grievance regarding salaries to the Committee, who during this visit reviewed their technical skills and conducted interviews. This ultimately led to the personnel achieving salary parity with other technical trades in RASvy. Photo .2P was taken after a formal medal presentation at the Army Survey Regiment in c1976. In the 2000s Legacy released a range of Legacy Bears to expand the merchandise available for sale during Legacy Week and at other fundraising opportunities during the year. This special edition WW2 land army bear was released in 2019. The Women's Land Army (WLA) was a British civilian group created during World War II to replace the men called up for the military. Over 80,000 women served working on farms, in sawmills, and in forestry. They became know as Land Girls and Lumber Jills. These four photographs of SPR Santina (Argetto) Straube capturing topographic features – plotting with a Wild B8 stereo plotter were most likely taken in c1980. Introduced in 1966, the Wild B8 stereo plotter was used for plotting topographic detail and contours. These analogue machines were manually controlled by adjusting the control knobs for the orientation of the 3D image. The B8s used a nine-inch square photo image on a film or glass diapositive which allowed highly accurate extraction of map features. At first, plotting by B8 and B9 equipment was undertaken at the aerial photography scale of 1:80,000 in pencil onto a controlled plotting sheet. Sheets were then inked up and reduced photographically to the 1: 100,000 publication scale for scribe impression production. In these photos SPR Santina (Argetto) Straube was plotting with a pencil or ink pen mounted at the far end of the pantograph arm. The plotting procedure was upgraded to direct plotting in ink with photographic reduction to publication scale. In 1975 four B8s were upgraded with tri-axis locaters as part of the Input Sub-system to enable digital extraction to AUTOMAP 1’s topographic database. When AUTOMAP 2 was introduced in 1982 these B8s were upgraded, and additional machines added to expand the Army Survey Regiment’s digital capture capability. This set of 16 photos of the Christmas Children’s Party were taken in the and the grounds of Fortuna, Army Survey Regiment in 1992. The Christmas party was an annual event enjoyed by the soldiers’ families, featuring amusements such as the ‘pig train’ and pony rides, a historic fire engine provided by the Golden Square Fire Brigade with Santa on board and refreshments such as cordial, lollies, ice creams and fairy floss. Single members readily volunteered to assist in the running of the party. An occasional highlight was displays of military hardware such as tanks and APC from the Puckapunyal’s Armoured Centre. Catering staff/contractors taking a break outside the kitchen are also featured in this collection. The Army Survey Regiment Wives Club was instrumental in establishing the Tennis Hut, featuring in photos .1P to .5P. The Wives Club initiated many social events.
