This publication is a result of funding made to the Corangamite Arts Council in 1990-91. Its aims were to identify and research the dry stone walls of the region, to raise their profile and through workshops continue the skills of those wanting to learn more about the craft. The book gives the history of the practice in the area and the various different styles with photographs to illustrate the different features. It also has a number of first- hand accounts written by stonewallers.This study has social, historical, artistic and interpretive significance as the walls are an important feature of the district. The account written by former builders of the walls provides an interesting insight into the various styles and reasons for their construction.Light green card cover. MEDIUM: Photographic print. DESCRIPTION: A photograph of abstract architecture. Black outer frame with glass front panel and white board inner frame. An abstract collection of building faces meeting towards a left off centre vertical line collision point. This picture is a meeting of mirrors, how many remains a mystery. Where one mirror or building starts and another ends, to the viewers eye is met with some uncertainty. Following lines, the clearest meeting of mirrors is where the building on the left appears to be the same and collides with a variety of other buildings coming horizontally in a distinct vertical line to the top of the image. The bulidings on the right have somehow through the skill of the photographer captured a bermuda triangle of walls. The mirroring angles of the walls being from either several different buildings, or from several different mirrors. This creates a strange collecetion of imagery, the viewer unable to make clear distinctions of where something starts or ends or from where it is coming from. The tonal shades and shadows created also play a role in creating an interesting collage of shapes and lines. This piece essentially speaks of lines, angles, geometric shapes, meeting points, shadow and light. Dr Peter Mervyn Elliott (1927-2014) was the President of the Royal Australian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 1983-1986. He was gynaecologist and obstetrician at King George V Hospital from 1961 to 1979. He was a lecturer in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Sydney from 1964-1992 and was Head of the Department of Gynaecological Oncology at King George V Hospital at the time of his retirement from the Hospital in 1992. During his long clinical association with the University of Sydney and King George V Hospital, he brought great distinction to the institutions in respect of the clinical care of women with gynaecology cancers. He was a pioneer in the development and promotion of clinical trials in gynaecological cancer, and with his links in Asia he was able to create training and clinical trials opportunities for many gynaecologists and gynaecological oncologists from the region. Ellott was also a significant art collector and patron, amassing a sizeable private art collection. John Black pictured as a young child, was the only son of Constantine and Efstathia Black (Mavrokefalos). John's parents came to Australia in the early 1900s. They owned and operated the Paris Residential Cafe at 56 Swanston Street in the second decade of the 20th century. John is the brother of Olga and Nina Black, both of whom were very active in Ithacan and Greek community cultural life.
