Single truck (4 wheel) straight sill combination tramcar with open ends, closed centre saloon, longitudinal seats. Centre section originally an 1892 Sydney cable car trailer ( No. 18 - North Sydney). Functional Object - Ticket punch, Railway Register Manufacturing Company, 1880's
Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co. Bell Punch No. D1902. A heavy nickel plated steel ticket or fare strip cancelling / registering mechanism used on Melbourne cable trams. When a fare was sold, the bell would ring advising the passenger that their fare have registered. "An ingenious device resembling in principle the ticket punch of a railway porter. It is carried by the conductor who wears pinned to his coat a 'trip-slip'. He punches this once for every fare received; the action is simultaneously registered on a dial inside the punch and bell rings to appraise the passenger of the fact. The punch is provided with a patent lock, the secret of which is known only at headquarters and effective system of check is thus secured." (" A story of the Melbourne Cable Tramway System" - page 54). Used by the MT&O and MMTB until 1922/23 when replaced by the check ticket system. Manufactured by the Railway Register Manufacturing Company. Lock number IDMA - see btm6. Has "TB" - Tramways Board - stamped on one side along with patent dates. Letter, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), "Salute to the Cable Tram", Oct - Nov 1940
Series of letters between Frank Shennen, Managing Editor of the Transportation Magazine of Sydney and Lewis Russell regarding cable trams. This information may have formed the basis of an article, "Salute to the Cable Tram" that appeared in the July 1948 issue of Truck and Bus Transportation - see Reg Item 2578. Letters were held with a paper and consisted on the following documents: Letters are in reverse date order. image i1 - item 1, image i2 - letters, image ia - the rear of item 1. 1 - two sheets of paper with cable car numbers and values - written in pencil on sheets torn from old MMTB tender documents - see image htd3908a for the rear of these sheets. 2. - Letter - 2 quarto sheets to Frank Shennen from Lewis Russell dated 7/11/1940 - advising difficultly in getting hold of all the details re cars and details re the inventory of the trams. 3 - Letter - 2 quarto sheets to Mr. Russell from Mr. Shennen, dated 4/11/1940 looking for records on car numbers in particular, notes Nicholson St shops. 4 - Letter - 1 foolscap sheet to Mr Shennen dated 18/10/1940 - draft of a letter regarding a Mr. Greig and MTT reports. 5 - Letter - 1 quarto sheet to Mr. Shennen from Mr Russell re a Mr Greig's history of the cable tram system, Chairman's reports of the MTT. 6 - letter - 1 quarto sheet to Mr. Russell, 16/10/1940 asking for a copy of Mr. Greig's report. 7 - letter - 2 quarto sheets to Mr. Shennen dated 12/10/1940, advising that many of the records have been destroyed when the MMTB moved out of the old head office. Tool - Sander, c. 1930-1955
This burgundy coloured, portable electric belt sander is stored in its own heavy duty cardboard box. It was made in England and, according to the label on the lid of the box, it is a Portrix Sander-Polisher, all-electric, portable, sands wood metal and polishes. Its uses include decorating, carpentry and polishing. It has a complete with electric unit with flex. The price of 75/- (75 shillings) is printed on the label of the box. The model and the brand of the sander have been removed from the manufacturer’s information embossed on the side of the sander. The sander is part of a collection of objects used by Jim Williams, maker of fine ship models from about 1930-1955. Most of the components for the models, as well as many of the tools, were handmade by Jim Williams. Jim’s family has donated the ship model “Sovereign of the Seas” and many tools, accessories and documents used in the making of this and other ship models have been donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. Please see our record 3732 of the mode Sovereign of the Seas for further details of the ship and the maker.This vintage Portrix sander-polisher represents tools used for the hobby and skill of ship model making that has been carried as a leisure activity out for generations. Ship model making was also a pastime for sailing crew, who often made a model of the ship in which they were sailing. This sander was used by local Warrnambool man, Jim Williams, who was employed at Cramond and Dickson clothing store, and then at Fletcher Jones menswear for 27 years. It was used in making components for the model of the historic ship, the Sovereign of the Seas. The Sovereign of the Seas was a historic 17th century English war ship with important maritime heritage.Belt sander, electric.
