The wedding in 1930 of George Chilianis and Anthi Mavrokefalou. To the left of the couple is the groom's sister Ekaterini Chilianis-Koutsouveli; on the far left is her husband Nikolaos Koutsouvelis (Black) holding their young son Billy. To the left of the bride is Vasiliki Koutsouveli-Adamopoulou. Both George and Anthi were born in Ithaca and migrated to Australia in the 1920s. Like many early Ithacan immigrants George eventually went into his own business in the 1930s in partnership with Panayioti (Peter) and Theofilos Kouvalias, a fruit shop, the 'South Melbourne Fruit Palace' at 288 Clarendon Street, South Melbourne. Anthi was an active member of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society was awarded Honorary Life membership in 1995 - the first time that women were bestowed this award by the IPS.A copy of a studio photograph of a family wedding group. David Reid (1820-1906) was a pastoralists and politician. He left school at 16 and after meeting the overlander John Gardiner he decided to look for land south of the Murray River. Equipped by his father with some 500 head of cattle, 2 bullock wagons and teams and 6 assigned servants, he reached the Ovens River on 8 September 1838. David settled at Currargarmonge, near Wangaratta. At the end of 1843 he took up land near Yackandandah. In 1847 he took up a section of the family run of which Woorajay (Wooragee) formed a part. He built the first water driven flour-mill in the district on his Yackandandah run in 1845; his woolclip of 1848 was one of the first to be handled by R. Goldsbrough and was claimed to come from sheep descended from stock imported in the 1820s from George III's flock. Going into politics, he held the Legislative Assembly seat of Murray from October 1859 to May 1862. David Reid was a highly regarded grazier and local politician who was significantly involved in settlement around the Yackandandah area. Groups of people are standing on Monbulk Road, up from Belgrave. In the background are four women abreast walking away. There are two men, a young boy and a woman standing together in the middle ground and two younger women closer to the camera, standing beside a cart (with only a large cartwheel visible). There may be another man speaking to them. There is a path going up the hill to the right, with fence posts on the high side and a closed gate at the top. On the left of the photo there is a house below the road. There are two water tanks which look new. It may be the same house as appears in other photos in this collection. Another building is visible in the distance.

Though described as WW2, this image is probably from WW1 era. Possibly identified as the Chateu d'Ecouen located 5.6 kms from Montmorency, a northern suburb of Paris. From 1850, it was the site of a secondary school for girls of the Legion d'Honneur. Today it is a musem dedicated to the Renaissance. Thomas Carlyle Lothian (1880-1974) was born on 7 May 1880 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, eldest child of John Inglis Lothian, bookkeeper, and his wife Lillias Charlotte, née Smith. The family arrived in Melbourne in July 1888, John having come to represent the publishing firm of Walter Scott. His father started his own company in c1890. Thomas joined the business in c1897. In 1911 he established the Standard Publishing Co. Pty Ltd to sell the publications of the Caxton Press direct to the public. In 1912 he married Effie Marian Vines, who had worked for several years in his father's office. His father retired the same year and Thomas formed the company of Thomas C. Lothian Pty Ltd to carry on representing numerous well-known British and American publishers. However, he also published in his own right as the Lothian Book Publishing Co. Pty Ltd. In time he handed over his businesses to his two younger sons. His wife Effie pre-deceased him; he died at ‘St Abs’ on 19 April 1974. People in the photo are identified as: Left: daughter Lilian and centre front daughter Jean Back: Son Noel who studied horticulture and became Director of the Adelaide Botanical Gardens for 30 years; son John who managed the Standard Publishing Co. and sons John and Louis who became directors of the publishing firm. From the 1940s Melbourne Legacy ran residences for children of deceased servicemen. In the 1980s it was decided to sell the final property as the requirement for care had dwindled. These photos show the auction day at Blamey House (previously known as Harelands), from the street the auction flag and 'For Sale' sign can be seen. The photos show a large group of people watching the auction names are unknown. The property at 5 Willesmere Rd Kew was formerly known as Harelands. It was renamed Blamey House when the previous Blamey House (at 1267 Burke Road) was sold in late 1970s.
