This is a photograph of a group of people dressed up in traditional Japanese costumes for a Church of England bazaar and fete C 1900. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries Churches in Orbost provided venues for social activities, fellowship and entertainment. Many concerts, festivals and money-raising fetes were held by the church committees. St. James' Anglican Church, Orbost, was conceived and built as a memorial to the men 'who served and suffered during the Great War' as noted on the foundation stone. The Right Reverend GH Cranswick, DD, Bishop of Gippsland, laid the stone on 1 October 1927.This item is reminiscent of the late 19th - mid 20th centuries when church-going was more commonA black / white photograph on grey buff card. David Reid (1820-1906) was a pastoralists and politician. He left school at 16 and after meeting the overlander John Gardiner he decided to look for land south of the Murray River. Equipped by his father with some 500 head of cattle, 2 bullock wagons and teams and 6 assigned servants, he reached the Ovens River on 8 September 1838. David settled at Currargarmonge, near Wangaratta. At the end of 1843 he took up land near Yackandandah. In 1847 he took up a section of the family run of which Woorajay (Wooragee) formed a part. He built the first water driven flour-mill in the district on his Yackandandah run in 1845; his woolclip of 1848 was one of the first to be handled by R. Goldsbrough and was claimed to come from sheep descended from stock imported in the 1820s from George III's flock. Going into politics, he held the Legislative Assembly seat of Murray from October 1859 to May 1862. David Reid was a highly regarded grazier and local politician who was significantly involved in settlement around the Yackandandah area. In 1900 "Morningside" was leased by the Langley family and was now taking in paying guests. The photo shows 'Morningside" with some of the Langley family in foreground,from left to right, Alice Maud (b. 1879) standing; Arthur Geo. (b. 1886) in front seated on ground; Florence (b. 1880) seated; Charles (father) (b.1853) standing wearing hat; Henry (Harry) (b. 1887) seated on ground in front; Alice Maria (b. 1855, nee Freeman) (mother) seated and Lucy Myrtle (b. 1884) standing. In the centre there a group of people who appear to be conducting a funeral, some appear to be dressed in Free Masons clothing or Rechabite, four men are holding poles, two are wearing Free Masons bibs. To the left of the photo are what appears to be mounds from fresh graves. On the right side of the photo there is a monument, possibly for a grave, a picket fence runs along the back of the crowd. Groups of people are standing on Monbulk Road, up from Belgrave. In the background are four women abreast walking away. There are two men, a young boy and a woman standing together in the middle ground and two younger women closer to the camera, standing beside a cart (with only a large cartwheel visible). There may be another man speaking to them. There is a path going up the hill to the right, with fence posts on the high side and a closed gate at the top. On the left of the photo there is a house below the road. There are two water tanks which look new. It may be the same house as appears in other photos in this collection. Another building is visible in the distance.
