Issued to Brother Clyde Warren on his enrollment as a member of the I O R Young Australia Tent No 142 (Harcourt), on the 4th May 1915, signed by Isaac James, Superintendant & Bro R Grant, Secretary of the Junior Rechabite Lodge. A necessary pre requisite to membership was 'signing the pledge' to abstain from liquor.A reminder of the Temperance movement and its important role in developing a moral framework for the youth of the district. Harcourt was a ‘dry’ district for upwards of eighty years due to the influence of the Temperance movement. Pre-printed certificate with gold-leaf heading over a colourful crest, , scenes of safety in the ark, a rowboat leaving a shipwreck & St George slaying the dragon, two heralds (male & female) bearing temperance banners and, at the foot, a tripartite crest bearing the southern cross and resting in wattle. Handwritten names, date and signatures.

This Bateman & Co penny token was given to Les O'Callaghan by his workmate and neighbour Roger Walsh. This is the story which accompanied the gift. 'This penny has been in my possession since 1946. Was obtained at Koroit Races that year -Royal Gem winner of the Caulfield Cup. This penny was wrapped in silver paper and was accepted by the bookmaker Mr Harold James whom I clerked for as a wager. I in turn payed [sic] my wages for working for this bookmaker and received same. Incidently [sic] the custom of this bookmaker in those days was the clerk usually was paid with silver, which was left in the bag as he did not wish to carry the silver home as he lived in Melbourne.Circular coin -obverse has name of company (William Bateman) in an inner circle with the word Victoria across the centre; within outer circle the type of trade engaged in and the year minted. The Holy Name Society was prominent in Ballarat until the reforms of Vatican II. It promoted reverence for the Name of Jesus Christ, and abhorrence of blasphemy, profanity, and immorality. By the 1950s membership of the society in Australia numbered in excess of 100,000. The Holy Name Society was a male society although where it still survives it now welcomes both Catholic men and women.Blue silk banner trimmed in gilt braid the lower edge handkerchief cut with gold fringing. gilt cord with gilt tassle ends to either side. The society logo of the Chiros appliqued in the centre with the words of the Roman Emperor Constantine "In this sign we shall conquer", embroidered on a scroll beneath. The branch identity / name embroidered above and below the emblem and scrollwork.

The Norman Oliver collection. Norman Oliver was three times Mayor of Bendigo - 1950-51, 1964-65, 1970-71. One typed paged titled 'Bendigo Municipal Free Library Report for the month of April 1953'.
