Instrument - Scientific Instument, Telegraph Relayer, c1870-1893
Probably acquired for use in Telegraphy courses run at the Ballarat SChool of Mines between 1875 and 1893. Telegraph relays amplified electrical signals in a telegraph line. Telegraph messages traveled as a series of electrical pulses through a wire from a transmitter to a receiver. Short pulses made a dot, slightly longer pulses a dash. The pulses faded in strength as they traveled through the wire, to the point where the incoming signal was too weak to directly operate a receiving sounder or register. A relay detected a weak signal and used a battery to strengthen the signal so that the receiver would operate. This relay was made by the firm of Charles T. and John N. Chester, two brothers who successfully partnered in New York City. Charles (1826-1880) founded the firm and provided the expert telegraphy knowledge while John (1820-1871) kept the books and managed the business operations.(http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_706518, accessed 25/01/2018)Electromagnetic relay device used in telegraphy. The working parts mounted on a brass plate, attached to a wood base. Equipped with four terminal posts. Adjustable contactor mechanism. This electromagnetic Relay Device was used in Telegraphy at the Ballarat School of Mines. After a special meeting of the Ballarat SChool of Mines Council in 1874, a decision was made to offer instruction in Telegraphy, a subject not directly related to mining. Telegraphy was taught by W.P. Bechervaise, postmaster at Ballarat. On 07 October 1874 the Ballarat Courier correspondent reprted on Telegraphic training: "... these classes ... are a snare and a delusion, as there is scarcely the remotest chance of obtaining employment when the examination has been passed."scientific instrument, telegraph relayer, telegraphy relay device, telegraphy -

The Beechworth Burke Museum
Animal specimen - Diamond Dove, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
Diamond Doves reside in Oceania and Northern America. They are often seen gathering in small groups and foraging on the ground near a source of water. Diamond Doves are granivores. Their diet includes seeds of herbs and grasses. The sound made by the dove is a slow "coo" often repeated twice. These birds are renowned for their ability to find their way home over large distances which has resulted in the use of these birds as messengers throughout history. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum and the National Museum of Victoria, as well as individuals such amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. The Diamond Dove is a small pigeon with red rings around their eyes. It stands on a wooden perch with an identification tag tied around one leg. The upper part of the body is a brown grey and the belly of the dove is a cream colour. This bird has distinctive white spots on the wings. This particular specimen is a grey coloured Diamond Dove. Other colourings for this species are white, brown, yellow, red, cinnamon and pied.2b Little Turtle Dove. About 1880 the family moved to Gippsland where Henderson managed a station near Orbost. Grace learned to love the Gippsland forest. She began to express in verse her understanding of the sights, scents and sounds of the bush, often writing in some remote clearing, her manuscripts stored for privacy in a hollow trunk. The Bairnsdale Advertiser published her first story, and the Weekly Times an early poem; then on 28 November 1885 her poem 'The Old Maid' was published in the Australasian under her pen name Jennings Carmichael. Encouraged by its editor, David Watterston, Grace sent nearly all her subsequent verse to that newspaper. Dismissal of a premier: the Philip Game papers (Don Woodward Collection), 1968
Jack Lang was a former NSW ALP state treasurer and was elected Premier on two occasions. His government was dismissed in his second term of government by the State Governor due to his defying the Commonwealth Government's financial agreements' legislation. Sir Philip Game was the State Governor who dismissed Lang. The author of this book is the daughter of the secretary to the Philip Game. Unlike Sir John Kerr (who dismissed Prime Minister Whitlam in 1975), Game expressed some uncertainty about whether his decision to sack Lang's government was sound: "In spite of the popular endorsement of my assassin's stroke, I am still wondering if I did right. I still believe that Lang has a great deal of right on his side, that a lot of what he advocates will have come to pass, and that the extremists on the other side are a greater danger than extreme Labour." Animal specimen - Australaisn Bittern, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
The Australaisn Bittern is a partly nocturnal bird who resides in costal and sub-coastal locations in south-west mainland Australia, south east Australia and Tasmania. They can be found in wetlands, swamps and among reeds. These birds are mostly brown and yellow in colour and with short legs and a stocky body. The "woomph" sound made by the Bittern late at night is thought to have been the origin of the traditional Aboriginal myth of the Bunyip. The Bunyip, like the Australasian Bittern, was believed to reside in reedy swamps. The Australaisn Bittern is a stocky bird with mainly yellow and brown colouring. This colouring makes the bird difficult to see in the dense, reedy vegetation it resides amongst in shallow freshwater wetlands. When threatened, the Australaisn Bittern will raise its bill skyward in a pose which helps it camouflage. This specimen has streaked yellow-brown feathers, a yellow bill and legs which are a yellow-green colour. It stands on a wooden platform.taxidermy mount, taxidermy, animalia, burke museum, beechworth, australian museum, skin, reynell eveleigh johns, bird, bunyip, myths, australaisn bittern, bittern -

book, Grace Elizabeth Jennings Carmichael
This book was produced with a grant from the Victorian Government Dept of State and Regional Development. Grace Elizabeth Jennings Carmichael (1867-1904), poet and nurse, was born on 24 February 1867 at Ballarat, Victoria, daughter of Archibald Carmichael, a miner from Perthshire, Scotland, and his wife Margaret Jennings, née Clark, from Cornwall, England. . Container - Bottle, Singer Sewing Machine Company, Circa 1878
The artefact is a glass sewing machine oil bottle recovered from the 1878 shipwreck of the Loch Ard near Port Campbell. It was raised by Flagstaff Hill divers in 1973. The sewing machine oil bottle was used to lubricate a sewing machine mechanism and supplied with new Singer sewing machines as part of the items tool kit. The Loch Ard was constructed on the Clyde in 1873 for the prestigious Loch Line of colonial clipper ships, designed for the Australian run. She sailed from England on 1 March 1878 carrying 37 crew, 17 passengers and a diverse general cargo ranging from luxury items to bulk railway iron. On 1 June 1878, emerging from fog and hearing too late the sound of breakers against the tall limestone cliffs, the vessel struck the southern foot of Mutton Bird Island and sank in 23 meters of water. Of the fifty-four people on board, only two survived, one young male crewman, Tom Pearce, and one young female passenger, Eva Carmichael. (See References or Notes below for further details.)The bottle is believed to be part of the cargo or passenger goods recovered from the Loch Ard that is of historical significance for Victoria. Registered on the Victorian Heritage Register ( S 417). Flagstaff Hill has a varied collection of artefacts from the Loch Ard. Its collection is significant for being one of the largest accumulation of artefacts from this notable Victorian shipwreck. The object gives us a snapshot into maritime history so we can interpret the story of this tragic event. The collection of marine objects is archaeologically significant as it represents aspects of Victoria's shipping history that allows us to interpret Victoria's social and historical themes of the time with this wreck being one of the worst and best-known shipwrecks in Victoria's history. Clear glass oil bottle, rectangular body with concave sides. The bottle has raised inscriptions on the glass. The bottle contained Singer Sewing Machine Oil bottle.
