It may also have originally contained some lotion or powder but there is no trade name to indicate this. It would have been found in a bedroom. Such items as these would have been given as presents to members of the more affluent families in the early 20th century. This container has no known local provenance but is retained as an attractive item from the past. It will be useful for display.This is a round-shaped cut glass container with a plain glass base and a metal lid which fits over the top of the container. The top of the lid has an enamel circular piece inserted into the metal. This piece has a white background with a painted image of the head and shoulders of a woman in brown and flesh-coloured tonings. This glass has been issued to mark the end of the name of St. Ann’s College, Warrnambool in 1990 and the school’s amalgamation with the Warrnambool Christian Brothers College in 1991. St. Ann’s School commenced in 1872 and was then known as St Mary’s Convent of Mercy School, Wyton. The latter name was the name of the ex-John Ardlie home in which the school was then situated. There were eight foundation Sisters of Mercy. In 1888 the name was changed to St Ann’s School and in 1991 it amalgamated with the Warrnambool Christian Brothers College to form Emmanuel College. This glass is an interesting memento of the year that the name of St Ann’s College in Warrnambool ceased to exist. This is a clear drinking glass in the shape of a goblet with a round base and an elongated body with a round opening at the top. This fragment is a piece of a cup that came from the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool. This hotel, on the western side of Kepler Street near Lava Street, Warrnambool, was opened in 1872 with John Tate as the first licensee. Two notable families associated with the Criterion Hotel were the Humm family, (late 19th and early 20th centuries) and the McGennan family ( from the late 1920s on) The name on the fragment is that of Theresa Lynch who was the licensee of the hotel from 1919 to 1926 and the owner for most of that time. The hotel was closed in 2008 and, following a fire, the building was demolished in 2013.This fragment is of interest as it is one of the few items we have that date from the time of Theresa Lynch and the Criterion Hotel.This is a curved piece, one half of a white china cup. The fragment has been broken and mended. These bottles came from the Warrnambool aerated waters factory of Ralph Reeves. This factory in Koroit Street, Warrnambool was established in the 1860s as the Union Cordial Factory by John Davis and then bought by John Fletcher in 1885. Fletcher’s business continued until 1930 when it was bought by Ralph Reeves. Coming to Warrnambool about 1900 Ralph Reeves managed a Banyan Street cordial factory which had been established by John Rowley. Ralph Reeves bought a business in 1916 at Hamilton and sold it in 1929 to concentrate on the Warrnambool business. Reeves was joined by his son Reg in Warrnambool and Reg operated the business from 1946 to 1972. The trade name of Reeves was still used after Reg Reeves died and continued on for some years.These bottles are of significance as they come from the Warrnambool aerated waters factory of Ralph Reeves. Reeves and his son operated this business for 40 years. Cordial manufacturing was an important industry in Warrnambool for over 100 years. These are five glass bottles with a rounded body, a round base and a smaller rounded neck. The tops are made of moulded glass and the stoppers are made of cork with a brown top. The name of the maker of the aerated waters is impressed into the glass on the side of the bottles.‘This bottle always remains the property of R.V. This small flag has been made by Brauer College in Warrnambool to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool and to mark the 84 years of Brauer College’s existence. Warrnambool was founded in 1847 as a planned town to provide port facilities for the export of produce of the local pastoralists and squatters. Brauer College began as the Warrnambool Technical School in 1913 with John King as the Principal and the original school buildings in Timor Street. In 1958 the school became the Warrnambool Technical College and today this site is occupied by the South West TAFE facility. The secondary school section of Warrnambool Technical College relocated to Caramut Road in Warrnambool and since 1990 has been known as Brauer College. It was named after a local prominent doctor and supporter of State Education – Dr Alfred Brauer. This flag is of some interest as a memento of Warrnambool’s 150th anniversary and of Brauer College’s part in this. This is a rectangular-shaped plastic flag attached with three metal staples to a circular-shaped wooden stick. These plaques commemorate the winner of the Warrnambool Brierly Steeplechase in 1965 and 1966. The owner of the horse was Mr D. Wedge, the horse was Regalo from New Zealand and the jockey was N. Rantall. The plaques were originally display items based in areas of the Warrnambool Racecourse. The Brierly Steeplechase was first run in 1902, with the name coming from a local property and homestead established by William McKiernin in the 1850s. Today the Brierly Steeplechase is part of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival which features the famous Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase. This shield was a trophy awarded to the lodges of the Independent Order of Oddfellows in the 1960s. The first Warrnambool Lodge of the I.O.O.F. was established in 1860 (Loyal Victorian Lodge) and the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street Warrnambool was opened in 1869. One winner of the shield, apart from the Loyal Warrnambool Lodge, was the Loyal Aurora Lodge and the only reference found to a lodge of this name was based in North Melbourne. No information has been found on Frank D. Grayham. This shield is of interest as a trophy given by the Independent Order of Oddfellows in the 1960s. The I.O.O.F. in Warrnambool has been of historical importance in the social and business spheres in the city. This is a wooden shield with a central metal plaque attached and six other smaller metal plaques. The central plaque has an ornamental edging and the plaques are attached with metal pins. This videotape has material related to the annual arrival in Warrnambool’s coast (mainly at Logan’s Beach) of Southern Right Whales. These whales come annually to the Western District coastline about May and stay until about October. and some calve at Logan’s Beach – hence the name Logan’s Beach Whale Nursery. The whales have become an important tourist attraction in the area. Most of the whales return to the area regularly and have been named from their particular markings. Wilma the whale was a great favourite and was seen about every three years in Warrnambool but is now appearing in other parts of Australia. The tape is dedicated to Robert Ulmann who was a well-known artist and conservationist in the Warrnambool region. He did much to ensure the whales received protection and publicity in the Warrnambool environment. This tape is now in an outdated format and will be transferred to a more appropriate form as the material in it needs to be preserved. The whale migration to Warrnambool is a significant natural history event and material from the 1990s is important. This is an invitation to the launch of the conservation and publication project for the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board. The invitation was sent out in the name of Lilian Foyle, the Warrnambool photographer and artist who produced the portraits and some of the sketches on the board. A person representing Lilian Foyle welcomed those who came to the launch. The Pioneer Honour Board, initiated by Edward Vidler, was first assembled in 1907 to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. It has the portraits of 204 pioneer men of Warrnambool and district and is one of the best examples of a pioneer honour board in Victoria. It now requires extensive conservation work and an appeal has been launched to cover the cost of this. A publication with biographies of the 204 men is also being prepared. This invitation is of great interest as it is connected to the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board which is one of the most important historical items in the city of Warrnambool and a work of art in its own right.This is a buff-coloured piece of paper with black printing and a black and white photograph of Lilian Foyle. This name badge belonged to Rosemary Isaac, a member of the South Western Branch of the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria. The badge, designed by long-time member Rita Williams, shows a Norfolk Island pine tree and a fence line. The South Western Branch of the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria was formed in Warrnambool in November 1974. Its first major project was the making of a patchwork quilt for the Lighthouse Keepers cottage at Flagstaff Hill. This was presented to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society at a meeting of the Embroiderers Guild attended by Historical Society members and representatives of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village in October 1976. The company published annual directories of residents and businesses in Australia from 1857 to 1974 and these directories today are highly sought after by genealogists and researchers. This directory for 1946 came from th archives of the Warrnambool Standard newspaper. This book will be of considerable use to researchers and those wanting family information regarding Victorian and Canberra residents and their addresses in the 1940s. This is a suitcase known as a Gladstone bag. It is named after William Gladstone (1809-1898), a four-time Prime Minister of England. Gladstone bags were first produced by Edward Cole in London in 1854. This item has no particular local provenance but bags such as this one were commonly used, mainly by men, for business and sporting purposes. As it was compact and stored quite a lot of material in its deep interior, it was a popular choice for men travelling by public transport to the workplace or to sporting events. This Gladstone bag is retained for display purposes as an example of a mid 20th century suitcase.This is a small suitcase, called a Gladstone bag, made of stiffened brown leather built over a rigid metal frame. It has a leather handle on top of the metal frame and a metal lock on the side of the frame. There are metal clips to enclose the ends of the frame. There are metal straps attached to the sides of the case. Inside, the bag is lined with light brown cloth and there are two pockets on one side. This ledger contains material from the legal firm of Mackay and Taylor for the period 1931 to 1946. The material includes receipts, letters and typed summaries concerning the wills and property of Warrnambool and district residents at that time. Scottish-born George Mackay established a legal practice in Kepler Street, Warrnambool in 1891 and in 1893 he bought the next-door practice of the late James Fletcher, with the business then known as Fletcher and Mackay. In the 1920s John Taylor became a partner with Mackay under the name of Mackay and Taylor (later Mackay Taylor). In 1999 Taits Solicitors of Warrnambool merged with Mackay Taylor to form Tait Taylor. Today this business is known as Taits Legal. This ledger is of some importance as it contains much historical information (wills, deeds, property ownership etc) on Warrnambool and district residents in the 1930s and 40s. It will be very useful to researchers.This is a ledger with a black cardboard cover and red binding on the spine. The binding has broken and the covers and sections of the pages are detached. The cover is much stained and rubbed. The pages have been printed with red and blue lines but these have not been used. Instead a variety of letters, receipts and typed material have been pasted onto the pages. This booklet contains the first draft of an article on Samuel Baulch’s acquisition of his property, Rose Park which was in the Macarthur/Hawkesdale district. Samuel Baulch’s parents, Francis and Ann Baulch were pioneer settlers in the Kirkstall area and Samuel worked at the Dunmore Station in the Macarthur area before purchasing the property he named Rose Park in the early 1870s. In the 1890s he acquired property in the Dunmore Estate. Samuel’s son, Stan Baulch, acquired sections of the Dunmore property after his father’s death and he named his section, Rose Park, a property to the west of the original Rose Park. This article is of historical interest and will be useful to researchers of local and family history. This is a booklet of 18 pages. In 1868 John Rowley opened a soda water manufactory attached to the Corio Brewery and this was renamed the Warrnambool Steam Aerated Works in 1872. By the 1880s his factory at the corner of Timor and Banyan Streets was occupying half an acre of land , employing 13 people and manufacturing 20 varieties of drinks. Following Rowley's death the factory and plant was sold but the cordial manufacturing business continued for some years.
