Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.Booklet, Warrnambool Woollen Mill 1951-53, 1953
In 1869, the Warrnambool Meat Preserving Company commenced their business on the site, where it operated until 1875 when it was sold to the directors of the Warrnambool Woolen Mill Company. After being destroyed by fire in 1882 it wasn’t until 1910 that the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce was approached by Marcus Saltau and Peter McGennan to invest in a new mill. The original directors were James Dickson, P J McGennan, Robert Swinton, M Saltau, and J W Younger. In 1955 the Warrnambool Woollen Mill formed a partnership with the Wangaratta Woollen Mills. Dunlop bought the mill in 1968. From that time until its closure in 2000 it had a number of different owners, the last being the Smith Family Industries. This report contains the financial reports for the three years from 1951-1953.This report shows records of the Woollen Mill which was one of the most important industries in Warrnambool for nearly 100 years. This album contains photographs from a variety of sources in Scotland, England, and Australia. The date range of the photographers ranges from around 1847 to 1900. There are photos of families and individuals and some are obviously linked. This album has historic and social significance in that it appears to be a collection of family photographs which link areas of Scotland with the coming of early settlers to Australia and in some photos obviously to Warrnambool. They provide an overview of fashion and styles pertaining to the 1870’s through to around 1900’s and hence it has interpretive value.Brown leather bound hard cover with raised geometric design on the front. Back cover is plain. Edges of pages are gilded and closed with brass- coloured hinged clasp with keyhole. Contains numerous photographs of individuals and family groups. There are generally four to a page, with some empty spaces towards the back of the album. Inside front cover in grey lead 472 or/-. The 100th anniversary of the proclamation and declaration of the "Caulfield Road District" was held on 15 October 1957. A variety of public events were organised to celebrate this memorable occasion between 13 October and 8 November 1957. The "Centenary of Caulfield 1857-1957" photograph album which contains annotated images of these events is considered of great historical importance as a unique record of Caulfield events, people and places during this time. The Caulfield Centenary events were held between 13 October and 8 November 1957. Key participants included the Mayor of the City of Caulfield, Councillors, officers, and a wide range of community groups. The events included: a special Centenary Council Meeting at the Town Hall on 15 October; an opening ceremony; two receptions; two religious services; a naturalisation ceremony; an evening community float parade; a children's carnival at Caulfield Racecourse; the crowning of Centenary Queen and an impressive fireworks display. Item in the collection re William Anthony (Bill) Theodore DSM. The Sailor is Willam Anthony Theodore DSM, enlisted on 2.9.1940 in the RAN No PM2981. He served in the Seige of Tobruk, Greece, Crete, Matapan, Singapore, Pacific Islands, New Guinea to the Phillipine's. The HMAS Vendetta he was sailing on made 39 trips into Tobruk Harbour during the siege. In October 1941 so many bombs were dropped around the Vendetta that her Boilers and Engines shifted on their mountings and was ordered to Singapore for repairs. After Bill served on HMAS Arunta and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for "Gallantry, Skill and Devotion to Duty" during the Assault Operations at Lingayen Gulf. Bill was discharged from the RAN on 21.11.1945. From 1956 - 1995 over specific years Bill held the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer & Welfare Officer of the "Bendigo Rats of Tobruk Association". The main part of the panel is brown with a large flowery design in the middle, there are small flowers all around a small green band runs around and at the four corners a larger flower, there is a larger yellow band and another small green one followed by a large black band all along the black band more flower designs and another small green band, the panel is completed by another yellow band. The initial F. W. are on the outside black band. On the back the inscription ''Sample of gig and buggy lining done in 1969 by the last of the fully trained people in Bendigo'' written by John Ellison, Kangaroo Flat. Taken from St Paul's Cathedral steps. Has a small part of the Princes Bridge Station building on the left hand side. The Swanston St canopy of Flinders St station has the words "Cross Crossings Cautiously". A W class tram is northbound while an S or T class tram is southbound while another single trucker is west bound to Spencer St in Flinders St. The trams in the photo were used prior to 1944. All W class trams were converted to W2 class prior to 1944 and the single trucker westbound had been scrapped by then.
