20th Light Horse Regiment serving in a infantry role was posted to Merauke on the southern coast of Dutch New Guinea (now the Indoneasian province of Papua) in 1943. It was the only Australian Light Horse regiment to serve overseas in WWII. Sergeant Adrian Dunne, a native of Tocumwal NSW, was killed in action 12 November 1944. The folder containing the photograph of Sergeant Huf's grave in Egypt was sent to his father. The card is inscribed 'Cpl' but Huf had been promoted to Sergeant just prior to his wounding and evacuation from Gallipoli on HMT "Royal George". He died of his wounds at sea and was buried in Egypt. This folder was part of a collection of items donated to Albury RSL by his surviving sister Miss Edna Huf of Albury about 1970 and passed to the 8/13th VMR Collection. Donated to the 8th/13th VMR Collection as part of a collection of regimental silver from the 20th Light Horse Regiment circa 1950. 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised following WWI as part of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade AMF. It had its HQ at Seymour and sub-units along the Goulburn Valley extending to Tocumwal in NSW. During WWII the regiment was motorised then served as infantry in Dutch New Guinea. It was the only light horse regiment to serve overseas in WWII.Is a representative example of a trophy from between the wars. In 1947, Louis Jackson joined the Citizen Forces (CMF) and served as a captain in the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. Geoffrey R Fink volunteered for military service in early 1940. He served initially with 3rd Division A.A.S.C. but was discharged as being in a reserved occupation at the Aircraft Production Commission. He resigned from the Commission and joined the AIF on 28 July 1941 and was allotted to 2/8th Armoured Regiment. He served with the regiment in New Guinea and on return to Australia was transferred to No 41 Landing Craft Company serving out the war in the South Pacific. Geoffrey Fink died 14 March 2008 aged 86 at Wangaratta Victoria.This object is a well provenance, in good condition and completeness, and is a fine example of the uniform worn by a soldier who served in the Second World War (1939-45) in an unusual combination of roles, armoured corps and water transport. The 13th Light Horse Regiment (AIF) was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in March 1915. The regiment took pride in their inauspicious number and adopted the nickname 'the Devil's Own' and wore a black ostrich plume in their hats. 3234 Trooper William Ronan, a farmer of Tallangatta Victoria, served with the 13th Light Horse Regiment on Gallipoli, in Egypt and on the Western Front from 1915-1919. Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Hunter joined 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles from 20 National Service Battalion November 1956. He transferred to Papua New Guinea Volunteer Rifles in 1967, returning to VMR in 1977. He commanded A Squadron 8/13 VMR 1978-1980. He was Staff Officer Grade 1 Headquarters 3 Division 1983-1985. Following retirement he was active in the regimental museum and wrote the book "My Corps Cavalry: a history of the 13th Australian Light Horse AIF". VX 42774 Captain Robert (Bob) Fyffe, a grazier from Tocumwal, NSW, served with the Tocumwal troop of the 20th Light Horse prior to WWII (1939-46). He enlisted at the outbreak of war and served with the 9th Division Cavalry Regiment in North Africa. During the attack on Trig 22 on 17 July 1942 Captain Fyffe commanding a composite squadron manoeuvred his tanks to knock out machine guns and anti-tank guns enabling 2/32 Battalion to capture the objective. Captain Fyffe was awarded the Military Cross for his leadership and courage in the action.
