Medal - Memorial board Dunn
20th Light Horse Regiment serving in a infantry role was posted to Merauke on the southern coast of Dutch New Guinea (now the Indoneasian province of Papua) in 1943. It was the only Australian Light Horse regiment to serve overseas in WWII. Sergeant Adrian Dunne, a native of Tocumwal NSW, was killed in action 12 November 1944. He was aged 25.Rare evidence of the service of the only Australian Light Horse regiment to serve overseas in World War II (1939-45). Photograph - Huf grave folder, 1919 circa
The folder containing the photograph of Sergeant Huf's grave in Egypt was sent to his father. The card is inscribed 'Cpl' but Huf had been promoted to Sergeant just prior to his wounding and evacuation from Gallipoli on HMT "Royal George". He died of his wounds at sea and was buried in Egypt. This folder was part of a collection of items donated to Albury RSL by his surviving sister Miss Edna Huf of Albury about 1970 and passed to the 8/13th VMR Collection. Part of a unique collection of items relating to a single Australian soldier who died in the Gallipoli campaign, WWI, and kept by a sibling till close to her death and passed to a local military collection for keeping.Green-grey heavy paper folder containing photograph of grave marker of 533 Sergeant CW Huf 7th Battalion AIF who died of wounds sustained at Gallipoli on 13 May 1915. Donated to the 8th/13th VMR Collection as part of a collection of regimental silver from the 20th Light Horse Regiment circa 1950. 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised following WWI as part of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade AMF. It had its HQ at Seymour and sub-units along the Goulburn Valley extending to Tocumwal in NSW. During WWII the regiment was motorised then served as infantry in Dutch New Guinea. It was the only light horse regiment to serve overseas in WWII.Is a representative example of a trophy from between the wars. The size, material and decoration show the relative affluence of the officers of a regiment from regional Victoria. The fact it carries no record of being awarded might indicate it dates from immediately prior to WWII when the regiment was mobilised and moved from its base area.Ornate silver cup with two handles intended for shooting competition in 20th Light Horse Regiment. 6th Light Horse Regiment was raised in New South Wales in 1914 and served at Gallipoli, Sinai, Palestine and Syria. The regiment wore wallaby skin hat bands instead of cloth puggarees, hence the reference to furred hats.A rare first edition of a regimental history. Worn by VX45541 Lieutenant Louis A Jackson who served with 2nd/8th Armoured Regiment in Australia and New Guinea during WWII. Following its return from New Guinea in 1944, 2nd/8th Armoured Regiment had a change of role and was redesignated Numbers 41, 42 and 43 Landing Craft Companies and served in Pacific Islands till the end of the war. In 1947, Louis Jackson joined the Citizen Forces (CMF) and served as a captain in the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. This uniform is a well provenanced, representative example of WWII clothing as worn by an officer of an armoured regiment. Service dress winter jacket with 37 pattern webbing and belt, and revolver holster. Geoffrey R Fink volunteered for military service in early 1940. He served initially with 3rd Division A.A.S.C. but was discharged as being in a reserved occupation at the Aircraft Production Commission. He resigned from the Commission and joined the AIF on 28 July 1941 and was allotted to 2/8th Armoured Regiment. He served with the regiment in New Guinea and on return to Australia was transferred to No 41 Landing Craft Company serving out the war in the South Pacific. Geoffrey Fink died 14 March 2008 aged 86 at Wangaratta Victoria.This object is a well provenance, in good condition and completeness, and is a fine example of the uniform worn by a soldier who served in the Second World War (1939-45) in an unusual combination of roles, armoured corps and water transport. This uniform was worn by Lieutenant Colonel D J Hunter OAM RFD when serving with the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. This tunic was worn by Sir David Fairbairn KBE DFC when Honorary Colonel of 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment 1981-83. Sir David served with 21st Light Horse prior to World War Two. During WWII he served with the Royal Australian Air Force flying Spitfires in Britain and Europe and later in the war, in the Pacific theatre. Following the war, he entered politics, holding the federal seat of Farrer from 1949-1975. He was Minister for Defence 1971-73. The 13th Light Horse Regiment (AIF) was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in March 1915. The regiment took pride in their inauspicious number and adopted the nickname 'the Devil's Own' and wore a black ostrich plume in their hats. The sailor is John Neale wearing his WWII RAN uniform; the airman is Jack Larkin wearing his WWII RAAF uniform. The soldier (as yet unknown) also had WWII service. Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Hunter joined 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles from 20 National Service Battalion November 1956. He transferred to Papua New Guinea Volunteer Rifles in 1967, returning to VMR in 1977. He commanded A Squadron 8/13 VMR 1978-1980. He was Staff Officer Grade 1 Headquarters 3 Division 1983-1985. Following retirement he was active in the regimental museum and wrote the book "My Corps Cavalry: a history of the 13th Australian Light Horse AIF". Uniform - Fyffe uniform & hat, 1945 circa
VX 42774 Captain Robert (Bob) Fyffe, a grazier from Tocumwal, NSW, served with the Tocumwal troop of the 20th Light Horse prior to WWII (1939-46). He enlisted at the outbreak of war and served with the 9th Division Cavalry Regiment in North Africa. During the attack on Trig 22 on 17 July 1942 Captain Fyffe commanding a composite squadron manoeuvred his tanks to knock out machine guns and anti-tank guns enabling 2/32 Battalion to capture the objective. Captain Fyffe was awarded the Military Cross for his leadership and courage in the action. This was 9th Division Cavalry's first tank action of the war.Fine example of a uniform worn by a well known grazier and citizen soldier of the Tocumwal district, southern NSW, in both peace and war.Khaki wool serge officer's tunic with leather Sam Browne belt and revolver holster, and slouch hat with emu plumes and 20th Light Horse hat badge against red backing. Tunic has 20th Light Horse colour patches. overseas service chevrons and ribbon bar for Military Cross, 39-45 Star, Africa Star, Defence medal, British War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939-45; metal Australia shoulder titles captain's rank stars and Rising Sun collar badges.
