Was presented to Mrs Lucie Hallenstein, honorary secretary of Alfred Hospital combine auxiliaries c. 1920. Mrs Hallenstein's Granddaughter Jane Helena Walters nee Shannon trainee of Alfred Hospital 1948-1951 presented the box to the nursing achieves with a hand written letter of explanation on 28/04/2011. Paper card insert is signed by Louisa Mann who was matron from 1912-1928.Item is significant as it was presented from Louisa Mann. Item also carries the Maltese cross from the Alfred hospital insignia. Has been presented to the archive from Alfred Hospital trainee. Handcrafted wooden box with parquetry Maltese cross in center. 'Glenara' is situated along the Deep Creek at Bulla and was built on an original government grant of land by Walter Clark. His fourth child, Alistair, spent much of his life there and with the help of his gardener, W.Peers, gained world recognition for introducing 150 new rose species which included the Black Boy and Lorraine Lee. Charles Meynell Pitt Withers (aka Bill) was the son and last child of artist Walter Herbert and Fanny (nee Flinn) Withers. He was born February 5, 1902 at Heidelberg and baptised April 4, 1902 at St John's, Heidelberg. The family moved to Southernwood at the corner of Brougham and Bolton streets, Eltham in 1903. The new Warrnambool Methodist Church was opened on 1st April 1939. The Church complex was designed by Messrs A.S. and R.A. Eggleston and built by J.D.E. and T. Walter. It comprised a church seating 430 people, an assembly hall seating 300, kindergarten and primary classrooms. The three ministers present in the photograph were: Rev B. Wylie (Hamilton), Rev N. Emil Jackschowsky was born in Insterburg (Prussia then Germany now Russia). He met Mary Schwerkolt aboard the 'Seydlitz' on its way to Australia. He was working as a ships steward. They married in Pittsburg in U.S.A in 1912. While visiting family in Germany he was conscripted. His son Walter was born in 1919. Emil became an American citizen in 1928. One star on the clasp means " One son K.I.A in WWII" This Mothers and Windows Badge was issued to Mrs M Baldwin, the mother of Pte Walter Robert Baldwin who died as a prisoner of war in Burma on the 27th of May 1943. He rests at the Thanbyuzayat Prisoner of War Cemetery, which is in what is now called Myanmar. This is a Death Railway related POW cemetery. Walter Baldwin was born in Mildura on the 12th of May 1921, and prior to enlisting lived at Iron Bark in Bendigo with his parents. He enlisted as No VX55835 in the 2nd AIF on 14.5.1941 in the 2/29th Batt aged 20 years. Embarked for Singapore on 30.7.1941 and disembarked 15.8.1941. He contracted Malaria in a December 1941. Taken POW early 1942 he is listed as died suffering from Cholera on 27.5.1943. “The 2/29th Infantry Battalion was formed at Bonegilla in Victoria in October 1940. A collection of documents about the Presidents Fund that was collated in 1985. First page is a summary by Legatee Isherwood dated 14/12/1966. Also included a document dated February 1985 written by Legatee Kemsley about the President's Fund that was established in 1933 with funds donated from the estate of Walter Berry in the name of his Company. The Howard and Georgina Berry Fund was to be used by the President to assist a legatee in financial difficulties. Legatee Kemsley was almost 90 and was passing on his knowledge of the history of the fund and its uses. He had served with Walter Berry in France when he was a personal assistant to General Monash. Also a poor quality copy of the original letter dated 24th February 1933 by Legatee Kemsley to the Trustees. There are two pages of a bank statement in 1984 showing the balance as being approximately $1,000. Was in a binder of documents that is passed from an outgoing President to the incoming President. It is primarily from the 1930s to 1990s. C Company of the 57th was composed of men drawn from Echuca, Eaglehawk and Bendigo.
