Folding post cards were popular as tourist souvenir of visits to places in Australia throughout the 20th century. Many thousands of the same photographs were reproduced and the Warrnambool and District Historical Society has several examples of these photographs. These folding post cards are kept as examples of the souvenirs tourists bought in the early and mid 20th century and the photographs themselves give a good indication of what Warrrnamool and district looked like at the time. The photographs also indicate what were considered at the time to be tourist spots worth a visit and a photo. These are folding post cards with scenes of Warrnambool. One has a kangaroo and a bush landscape on the front cover and one has seven kookaburras and a gum tree on the cover. There are 15 of the same black and white photographs in each (taken about the 1920s). The covers are buff-coloured with a space on the front cover to write and address and affix a stamp. This apron was made in 1915 by Irene Broughton, nee Long. She was born in Warrnambool in 1894 and married Arthur Broughton in 1913. She re married in 1924 Reuben Donnithorne and he died in 1931. Irene died in 1982 and is buried in the Warrnambool cemetery. The apron was left to Irene's niece, Helen Thomson who had the apron framed to preserve it. The apron would not have been in everyday use but a special garment worn when entertaining visitors for afternoon tea.This apron is a fine example of a home made house hold article from the early 20th century. The maker was born in Warrnambool.The apron is made of fine black cotton and edged with a broad lace flounce featuring a flower pattern. It is decorated with two sprays of delicately hand-painted motifs featuring Australian native flowers. The apron is in a wooden frame with a silver metal edging with scrolls on the front edge. This is the Weekly Times Annual of 1929. The Weekly Times newspaper was established in 1869 and was taken over by the Herald Newspaper group in 1892. It is a paper dedicated to rural affairs and is now the oldest rural newspaper in Australia. It has long been known as the ‘Bible of the Bush’. This annual contains many advertisements and photographs and sketches of places in rural Australia. It also has many articles, short stories and illustrations. Notable people that have contributed to this annual include Will Dyson (sketches), C.J.Dennis (poem), Vance Palmer (short story) and Norman Lindsay (reproduction of an art work). It also has a short story by Gertrude Hart, a novelist and short story writer. Her parents lived in Warrnambool in the 1850s (her father was the local Wesleyan minister) and her father retired to a place near to Warrnambool – Kirkstall. This attractive booklet is retained as an excellent example of Weekly Times Annuals in the past. It is also important because it has a short story by Gertrude Hart, a writer with connections to Warrnambool. This is a newspaper annual booklet of 68 pages. The cover has a buff-coloured background with a colour illustration of a stately building on the front with red printing and five colour photographs on the back page with black printing. These two notebooks come from Christ Church in Warrnambool. One contains the cash transactions of the Christ Church wardens (Folio 78) with the National Bank of Australasia (1932-1938) and the other contains the financial transactions of the Christ Church Parochial Missionary Association, Warrnambool (1933-1940). The Anglican Christ Church in Warrnambool was opened in 1856 with the addition of the nave in 1860 and the square tower in 1882. This is a book of essays selected by the author, Walter Murdoch, as the ones he most enjoyed writing. Walter Logie Forbes Murdoch (1874-1970) had a distinguished literary and academic career and is regarded as Australia’s best essayist. He was a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and syndicated literary columns in several Australian newspapers. He lived in Warrnambool from 1901 to 1904 as the Headmaster of a private school. He became a lecturer in English at the University of Melbourne and went on to be the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him and he was knighted in 1964. He published over 40 books. This book is of interest as it was written by Walter Murdoch who was not only important in Australia literature but also has a place in Warrnambool’s history. He came to Warrnambool in 1901, going into partnership with James Scott , the proprietor of a private school, Warrnambool College. They bought out Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School and when Scott retired, Murdoch became the sole proprietor and headmaster of Warrnambool College. While he was in Warrnambool Murdoch wrote the highly successful Australia history school text book, ‘The Struggle For Freedom’. He left Warrnambool in 1904. This is a soft cover book of 220 pages. It has a blue cover with a buff-coloured band around the front cover edge with a map of Australia outlined in black at the bottom edge. The book has a preface, 33 essays by Walter Murdoch and an index.
